Missing lad in Tenerife, Jay Slater

Surely he didn't go away without insurance that should pay for repatriation, I find it hard to believe anyone would ask for money for their son. Money raised should help those that searched in extreme conditions and never gave up. As a mother i would just want him found.

I think the repatriation of Jay's body will be costly.

I wonder if that is why she's asking for more donations?

... and did he have any kind of holiday insurance? I know it's expensive, but for peace of mind I believe it's worth it.

I've just been reading about this. I cannot believe the brass neck! Yes, I am sorry that she has lost her son - but the Go Fund Me has already amassed almost £60,000 and she's got the nerve to ask for more? Really? Anyone donating to this must be off their heads.

I also believe the search teams from police etc should be financially compensated. 29 days with police search units etc working in very difficult terrain will have been financially costly

That’s sheer greed in my opinion, appalling behaviour. Surely nearly £60k is more than enough?

I hope whoever is in charge of the money raised by Go Fund Me will donate a significant sum to the Spanish volunteers, , Guardia Civil officers and dog handlers who maintained a dangerous search over 29 days

Maddyone, the two men met Jay at a festival. Drugs are everywhere in those gatherings. Jay wasn’t a stranger to drugs or dealers. The men co-operated with the police in Tenerife, extended their visit to be interviewed. Police concluded they weren’t involved in his disappearance.

It’s tragic but it seems Jay made poor decisions. He’d been partying for 3 days and would have been wise to accept the lift the men offered once he’d slept. He set off tired, hungry and possibly already dehydrated, over wild inhospitable terrain. It seems a tragic accident not some kind of murder mystery

I believe also Iam64 that the men were not complete strangers to Jay either. I don't know when he met them previously, but they had spoken before the night he went back with them.

It's quite feasible they all took drugs of some sort or other and that's the reason Jay went back with them, and why they wanted to sleep. He, Jay, posted a photo of himself standing in the doorway of the Airbnb smoking a cigarette fairly early in the morning. I doubt he slept on a bed, more likely on some sort of sofa with the blanket round him that they'd given him and which is visible in the snapshot of him. So more than likely he was uncomfortable and hungry and that's why he decided to leg it back to his accommodation.

Why he went uphill - who knows... maybe he thought there might be somewhere selling food and had looked down the road and couldn't see any buildings so tried uphill. Maybe he thought also that he could short-cut it off the main road. All guesses on my part of course.

However, if he'd been afraid of the men, I doubt he'd have stood in the doorway taking selfies of himself to send to his friend(s).

I believe the two men were due to vacate the Airbnb, but agreed to stay in Tenerife to be interviewed further. Would the police have let them go if they had an inkling of suspicion about them and Jay's disappearance? They would be prime suspects.

'scran' does mean food, but it is a dialect word, used in north of England/Scotland, so not widely kown or widely used.

The answer is, even the most sensible of us some timesdo really stupid things. Whatever went on before this lad set off to walk back to his friends - maay be he had a row with those men, maybe he wanted drugs and they didn't have any, so what. Why didn't he just stick to the road? We will never know, he just made a bad call and the result is tragic.

He surely would have told his friend in the couple of minutes before his phone died…. wouldnt he have said ‘I need help I m trying to get away from a and b’ instead of ‘I ve missed a bus and there isn’t one for hours so I m going to walk back’

It always easier to think someone else caused a fatality than teenage silliness

I thought scran was a UK word. It means food. This was the reason one of those men said Jay gave him for wanting to leave. He used the word scran.

But I agree with you, it might not be as simple as it seems... the reasons they gave for why they took Jay with them and then for why he left both leave something to be desired.

I wonder if the Rolex was found with Jay or was just an empty rumor...

He could have been walking in that direction because he’d been threatened by the two men he stayed overnight with, and didn’t want to walk on the normal road where they could easily find him. They left Tenerife very quickly after his disappearance. One of them was a known drug dealer.
I simply don’t think this is as straightforward as we are led to believe. Why did he go back to the house in the village with these older men? No reason has beeen given despite the fact that the men were apparently interviewed by the police. To leave his friends and go to a mountain village with two older men and then leave the village and walk off the road which led by to the coast, and head into rough terrain isn’t normal, however much we try to normalise it. Something was going on, but we don’t know what. Those two men need to be interviewed here in the UK by our police who are thorough.

I saw mention of temperatures... However, the high that day was 26C, the low 18C. It didn't go above 26C that whole week... Temperature wasn't an issue.

And also that he was walking back to his accommodation... No he wasn't, he left the road, and was walking up a hill. If he wanted scran, he could walk (along the road) to Santiago del Teide, there are shops there, unlike in the nature reserve.

Not saying there's third party involvement (he was seen walking up the hill by himself by a lady), but also it's not a case of deciding to walk because he missed the bus. Who knows, perhaps he just wanted to see the view from the top and take a selfie...

I hitch hiked round North Wales with my best pal. We were 16- 17 and on holiday with my parents. We promised every morning when we left our rented farmhouse thst we wouldn’t hitch hike. Mum and dad had my younger sisters with them and our car wouldn’t fit all of us in. I’d gone to Wales with my friend, on a coach to join the family holiday. We were having more independence than we’d ever had. Hitch hiking seemed cool. Yes we lied - not something we made a habit of but we were naive and yiung

Yes I suspect the explanation is mundane rather than sinister. Young people, men in particular make all sorts of unwise decisions. I know I did, most of us were just lucky.

I believe this is a sad situation of a young man who’d been ‘partying ‘ for days, making poor decisions.
He was almost certainly hungry, coming out of whatever he’d consumed, probably dehydrated before he started walking. He’d no idea where he was and I don’t expect he’d any idea how tough the terrain is.
The two older men stayed on 24 hours to cooperate with police interviews and found to have nothing to do with his disappearance.
Sadly young people take risks, even when entirely sober and in charge of their faculties. Mostly they get out ok but unfortunate this young man didn’t

I can definitely imagine how he may have woken up and been keen to get back to his two friends
At 19 young men don’t always see danger and they feel pretty invincible he probably didn’t think it through at all ‘I m off I can easily walk it as the bus isn’t due for ages ‘ He probably never gave a thought to terrain or temperature or distance, just let’s get going young people aren’t renowned for patience or sitting back waiting like we would
It’s very sad but better I suppose than never knowing
Many people go missing every year but some make the news more than others I never understand why.

Assuming it is Jay Slater, I wonder why he would have taken the route he took. I still wonder about the two men who have been rather too smartly dismissed in my opinion. Why did he go with them? Why did he leave? And why didn’t they offer him a lift? Was he trying to escape from them? I feel they know more than they’ve said, at the very least why he left so early and why they didn’t give him a lift. And why he went with them in the first place.

According to one of the men interviewed, they (or he) was prepared to give him a lift back - but not at that time in the morning. Young men, partying all night, quite frequently are not ready to be civilised until they've caught up with their sleep... I had one at home 30 odd years ago - totally selfish.

Young Jay told this person that he needed some "scran" - because he was hungry, so that might have been what prompted him to head back alone, totally unaware of the kind of terrain he was in - apart from the view from the road. Young men (and women) do not think strategically and clearly until the age of about 25, so it's quite feasible that he thought he could walk back - not knowing how long his friends were going to continue to sleep - there well may not have been any food in that Airbnb either.

This is just pure speculation on my part based on what the friend told the news reporter. Sometimes things look 'odd' and "don't sit right" because we base our assumptions on what we would do.

And my speculation is to counter the the conspiracy-type theories that are now being promoted. Maybe drugs were involved, lots of young people indulge the habit. It also, according to my son, can make you very hungry. But the fact that drugs might have been involved does not make his Airbnb companions sinister accomplices in some plot to 'get' young Jay. It is still quite feasible that they were just lazy a**eholes who couldn't be bothered to do the decent thing and take him back to his accommodation.

I may be completely wrong, of course, but so might all those who are looking for a sinister twist to this young lad's disappearance.

The poor boy, and his poor parents. God knows what they’ve been going through, and still are.
