Body found, but questions still remain: What was he doing there? Why did he go down a hiking trail (one leading away from his destination), instead of waiting for a bus or going back to the AirBnb? Why did he leave the AirBnb anyway, soon after getting a lift there? And why did he choose to go there in the first place?
Johnny Vegas says he gave Jay a favour by letting him sleep there as his friends have abandoned him: No they haven't, their place was much closer and they answered his calls while he was in the car and on the hiking trail. So we can assume they would have also answered him was he knocking on their door early Monday morning.
Did Jay lose his balance and fall on that trail? Was he alone or did someone follow him? Will we ever know?

Missing lad in Tenerife, Jay Slater
(280 Posts)It’s every parents worst nightmare isn’t it? Our teens get to the stage of wanting to go away on holiday with a group of friends, and most of the time of course everything is fine and they have a great time.
This lad’s parents though must be suffering agonies. I do hope he’s soon found safe and well.
Speculation I know but I bet drugs are at the bottom of the trip in the car

Yes, I hadn’t thought of that. And why didn’t the two men who took him by car to the Airbnb take him back to his hotel, or to wherever they picked him up from?
One of the men from the Airbnb said they gave him a blanket - presumably so he could sleep. I think you can see it dangling around him in the selfie he took when he was smoking a cigarette outside the rental.
I'm guessing the men went to sleep and gave little or no thought to how he would get back, or when.
The question is - why did he go back with them?
I could understand if they had a pad / rental just a few minutes walk from the club why he'd be inclined to accept an invite - maybe full of beans and not wanting the rave / night to finish, but to go virtually from one end of the island to the other end, an hour is a long drive...
In my youth I used to attend all-night jazz clubs in London and friends would invite me and my other friends back to their 'pad' for drinks (the jazz club didn't sell alcohol) and to listen to more jazz - we didn't want the night to end, so I can understand him going off with friends from that angle.
But the men were much older than him, and resided so far away, it just seems such an odd set-up.
But without knowing the facts, it's all speculation.

Let me start by saying i do hope he is found, and soon.
I have resisted disappearing down the rabbit hole of theories, however one thing bugs me. It may be a translation thing, but given the searchers knew the last place his phone 'pinged' and they used search dogs i do furrow my brow at the statement included the phrase 'no trace was found' indicating that the dogs didn't pick up his scent. Given they knew his last location and a witness seeing the direction he was going, this, at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, seems odd/off to me, given the dry conditions.
I wonder if we will ever know the truth, for Jay and his family i do hope so.
The reports I've read say they were cadaver dogs and weren't given scent. 'No trace was found' = no dead person. Doesn't tell us anything.

Do we have a reliable timeline of events? He leaves Papagayo when? 5am? 6am? He is then taken by car to Casa Abuelatina, a 1 hour drive? Then at 8:30 he's already on the hiking path calling his friends he's lost?
Seems to me like he left that Airbnb pretty quickly...

Maddyone I think he may have got away with the custodial sentence because it seems the man he attacked was an attacker too I may be wrong !
Thanks for that information BlueBelle.
He’s not a nice boy, is he?
But as I’ve said before, I hope he’s found.
I think we all do.
The judge's summing up in that trial has been reported.

Yes, I think that is why.
However, it shouldn't make a difference, surely that should have been disregarded.
Jay Slater's employer posted on his Facebook page recently that the things being said of Jay Slater were grossly untrue. So someone is telling porkys somewhere - either his employer who has known him for about 3 years is totally wrong about him or he's not in fact the machete-wielding thug and prospective drug baron he's being painted as in various places. Even the guy he attacked, Tom Hilton, is pretty fed up with the abuse the Slater family is getting.
""Jay has been with us since he left school and is liked by all. He's a valued member of our team and we stand by him.
"The picture being painted of him is just not true. The fact is he's a 19-year-old lad missing in a foreign country. He needs to be back home where he belongs. Come on Jay we are all praying for you.".

I read the same. About the attackers all laughing in court during the trial.
But, is it true?
That is definitely true. The Judges words are out there to be found.
I agree about the press getting overly excited. But I'd not be overly impressed with the BBC either.
MSM gets an awful lot wrong.
I found out today that the word Rolex can be a slang code word for cocaine.

I have no idea re violence. I have only read what is on the bbc
Convicted with others of a vicious assault with a machete, golf clubs and an axe, splitting someone's skull open in 2021, JaneJudge. The attackers all laughed in court at their trial.
He is not a nice young man but even so his mother must be worried sick.

Some of the tabloids are gouging this whole thing for all it's worth, quoting theories quoted by others, it's impossible to know what is true and what is theory or speculation.
There's talk of the theft of a Rolex watch - implying that Jay Slater stole it - but not actually saying that he did. It just adds more fuel for the trolls who are apparently having a field day.
I shall stick to the BBC website whose reporting is a bit more sober.
He was - allegedly - advised by a couple of people he spoke to to go back to the AirBnB. With no water and a dying mobile battery that would have been the most sensible thing to do. But it is - again, alleged - he said that he couldn't. Is that because he couldn't remember where it was, or for some other reason? Or, is this even true?
It is definitely a mystery, and with so little official information and too many theories and so much speculation (which I'm adding to), it's impossible to know fact from fiction.
Whatever he's done, whatever his past history, I do feel sorry for his mother and father. I'm sure they didn't put him on the wrong foot as a teenager - it's very hard to keep control of them, and I'm sure they wouldn't rejoice at his involvement in the previous attack.
If he's alive, I hope he's found. If not, I hope his parents at least get to know the truth. Not knowing will haunt them forever.

I think you have substance in that fancythat

I suspect the boy is in a spot already searched. Remember how Nicola B. was found in rushes near where she fell in!
searchers said they had not been told to search rushes - Pathetic. Often people are found in areas already searched but not very thoroughly.
I am going to be brave and say something here.
After seeing numerous men in real life "search" for things, seeing on tv a bunch of, normally men, looking for someone, makes me feel a bit cold to be honest.
That could be a bit harsh? But maybe not.
I thought he had previously had a custodial sentence for another offence but may be wrong. Whatever, he isn’t someone I would be proud to call my son.
I see his GoFundMe page shows donations of almost £50k, people still donating.
Ahh, I thought he’d served a short prison sentence. How on earth did he get away with a community order after being convicted of that awful offence?
He’s certainly not a nice young man, but I feel for his parents.
bloody hell

I think he got off prison (how they got away with community orders for that vicious assault is bewildering) but no, his looks belie his character.
I don’t believe he is alive which is sad all round for his parents and family as well as him
Callistemom He seemed to have supposed to have had a ‘wake up call’ when he was in court for taking a machete to a young fellows head although I m not sure how he left the country with that hanging over his head ?
I haven’t read about the watch is that’s todays news ?
I agree with you Callistemon.
I think he’s not a very savoury character, despite his young age. He’s apparently been in prison and is mixed up with drugs.
However I really hope he is found alive.
If that cannot be, better for his poor parents for him to be found dead, than never found.
