Hi. I’ve just received my first time hearing aids yesterday. I’m finding it very strange. Anyone else new to HA and want to chat ?

I could scratch the innards of my ears out as they are so itchy. Putting oil in does not help.

It was so good being able to listen to a TV programme which was not muffled even if the choice was between football or Rishi Sunak.

Try an antihistamine until it settles and perhaps a little vaseline on the HAs keeping it away from the tube holes.

Also, I have the disabled person's railcard. I am not yet (quite) eligible for the senior railcard and I like to travel by train so it is a real saving. I do not consider myself disabled but announcements at stations are muffled at the best of times and it is so easy to miss something important.

If you do not consider yourself disabled in what basis did you apply for a disabled persons Railcard?
Be sure to declare that you have a disability when asked - travel insurance etc. or policies may well be void.

@Oldfrill, l meet the criteria for the card, which is wearing hearing aids. As I cannot hear announcements or when someone is approaching me from behind, I suppose it would fit the definition of disability in this sense. For that matter, I have no directional hearing, either. The level of my hearing loss is that I cannot hear a ticking clock or birds singing without my hearing aids. Unlike most people here, I have actually had some degree of hearing loss since I was a child. When I was ten, I had a mastoidectomy to remove the diseased bones in my middle ear. This meant that I had no middle ear or eardrum for decades. I was also left with a severe hearing loss which could not be helped with hearing aids at that time but I was told that the perfect hearing in my right ear would make up for the left ear - in other words get on with it. Getting on with things was still very much the order of the day in the seventies; not always a bad thing as it taught resilience. We believed this, although in reality it was ridiculous. However, l have made a career in classical music as l learned how to listen. I have also been able to lipread since childhood. Thirty years later, I was able to have my first hearing aids. Until then, I did not realise that autumn leaves made a noise when you walked on them. At this point, I had more and more dangerous ear infections so had a reverse mastoidectomy in 2010. I had my middle ear rebuilt with plastic bones and a skin grafted eardrum. Not only did it cure the infections but it also restored quite a lot of my hearing. Sadly, this was only a temporary respite and my hearing has deteriorated and continues to deteriorate in both ears, which is why I wear hearing aids and need them to be strengthened. I suppose I said that I didn’t consider myself to be disabled because I don’t want to be thought of in that way as l lead a normal life. There are many times where lifelong hearing impairments are a nuisance, but a lifetime is long enough to get used to it.

Sorry to hear that charleygirl what a nuisance. Mine were itchy for the first few days but not too bad now. Hope it settles, if not I think there are different ones you can try .

Charleygirl5 - have you been back with them? I am guessing that they are made of silicon and some people are allergic to this. There must be alternative materials available. Hope you manage to sort it.

Charleygirl5 Thu 27-Jun-24 18:35:27

Thank you. These private ones will be returned. They work well when in my ears but the plastic piece is not long enough so both drop out so easily.

Katyj Thu 27-Jun-24 18:47:02

No they don’t sound right at all. Take them back as soon as you can, it’s disappointing when you had high hopes. Hopefully it will be quickly sorted.
I’ve started with a horrible cold. Ears feel blocked, so having to turn my HA up, still can’t hear properly, really could have done without it !

All the bits of the hearing aid can be altered - size of dome, length of tubing etc. They need to be properly fitted - especially if you have paid real money for them!!

After last night's TV viewing or lack of it, I will be returning, possibly tomorrow. I should not have to hold a hearing aid in my ear to hear sound.

I have received a lot of helpful advice, thank you.

Katyj Sat 29-Jun-24 08:38:45

Good luck charleygirl. Let us now how you get on. You certainly shouldn’t have to hold them in. You’d likely loose them if you were outside. I was measured for my tubes a size 2, so far they've stayed put.
I forgot to take mine out when I went to bed last night, I realised before I went to sleep so I suppose I must be getting used to them.

Katyj Thu 04-Jul-24 06:39:26

Charleygirl5 How are you getting on. Hope your hearing aids are at least staying put.

I love my hearing aids that are linked to Bluetooth. I have tinnitus and it helps to reduce the chatter in my head. I listen directly to the radio through them and no one knows I am listening as I walk through our small town. Wouldn’t be without them.

NanaBabs1 Thu 04-Jul-24 07:38:18

I’m still having problems wearing my glasses with them, especially the reading glasses as I tend to wear them most. I’ve always worn them halfway down my nose so that I can read/crossword, etc. and also watch tv. Now I find I’m constantly having to fiddle with them, they slip off and there feels more pressure against my head. Spoke to Specsavers, yesterday, who say they can adjust them. A bit annnoying as I only picked up my new ones + free ones a few weeks ago!
Other problem has been pairing them with blue tooth. Fine on my iPad, but only pairing one of them on my iPhone. Probably need a bit more tech savvy help!

Katyj Fri 05-Jul-24 04:49:58

NanKate. Yes I love mine too for the same reasons as you. I spent an awful lot of time wearing my air pods before, so it doesn’t feel that much fifferent now.
The only problem I’ve got as NanaBabs1 mentioned is I can’t pair my iPad and iPhone at the same time have to disconnect one to use the other. It does say in the instructions you can pair to two.
NanaBabs1. Do you have three things for two hearing aids to connect ? I don’t understand why but on iPad I only have one thing to press on iPhone there are three. Sorry I’m not very good at explaining, hope someone else might know ?
I also wear glasses half way down my nose. I put the arms under my hearing aids and they seem to stay put.

KatyJ I’m glad you too enjoy listening to your iPhone through your hearing aids. I have to admit my Audiologist set it up for me. However if I want to listen to my IPad on my own I use my ear phones.

With regard to my iPhone if I want DH to hear say a telephone conversation I just swipe down on my screen to dis-enable Bluetooth. I’m sure you are up to speed with all this.

I’ve gone from a complete novice on my iPhone to someone who has my favourite apps available such as Tennis TV and Toilet Finder 😳

Happy listening.

I find the charge on my hearing aids goes up much quicker if I use Bluetooth.

Charleygirl5 Fri 05-Jul-24 08:50:56

KatyJ I had the tubing lengthened and the domes changed to larger ones. I can hear the phone and doorbell ring . I have very narrow ear canals so I do not think these domes are the correct size as the right one falls out easily. I will return!

I had coffee yesterday with 5 friends and heard most of the conversation so that is an improvement.

Katyj Fri 05-Jul-24 12:23:01

Charleygirl5 It’s all trial and error isn’t it. Mine seem to be taking much of my time up, faffing around cleaning them, changing the batteries, making sure they’re far enough down the canal, they seem to work their way out ! Still well worth it though I love that their blue tooth. Glad you were able to enjoy your coffee morning. I’m still missing odd words too but much better than before.

NanKate Sat 06-Jul-24 07:16:07

I have an extra piece of plastic wire on each hearing aid to stop them falling out and it works.
