Some small thing you longed for as a child, but never got. 🙁

Inspired by the donkey rides thread.

Until I was about 9, the whole family (6 of us) made a Saturday shopping trip to a town with an arcade where there were always a couple of Shetland ponies with bells on their harness. You could have a ride for sixpence.

I longed painfully for ride, but never even asked, since I was aware from a very young age that spare sixpences weren’t exactly plentiful.
What did you long for that never happened? (If anything.)

A dolls house

Dance lessons here too. There was no money for such luxuries so my friend and I would dance to records on the radiogram. I would put my wooden versions of ‘Scholls’ on to go on point!

I'm another who really wanted a dog. My friend's dog had puppies, they were adorable. I pleaded with my Dad but his answer was no. He said that it's unfair to keep a dog in a town, they need the countryside.
We lived in a small town pop. about 4,000 surrounded by countryside.
Since marrying and having my own home we have owned several dogs.

Clawdy

Ballet lessons, as I was an avid reader of the Lorna Hill novels about Sadlers Wells! No way my mum could have afforded them, and not sure there were any available in our area anyway. I did make sure my daughter had ballet lessons, and she loved them!

I, too, would have loved to have had ballet lessons but was told that there was no money available as I was already having piano lessons. All three of my children had ballet lessons (including my son) and my DGD, aged 11, is doing well in her lessons.
When I mentioned the Lorna Hill novels to my DH, he immediately came up with the names: Veronica Weston and Sebastian Scott. Do those names ring a bell, Clawdy?

I always wanted a cuckoo clock. Every time we went into a toy shop I would plead for one, every Christmas and birthday I was convinced I would get one ansd was disappointed. I offered to use my savings to pay half and pay the rest back from future pocket money, but that didn't work. I now understand that the regular calls would probably have driven us all crazy!🙂

I always wanted a bike but Mum thought they were dangerous.
However I was told if I passed my. 11plus I could have one.
I passed, . but the uniform cost so much Mum decided a good fountain pen would be a better option so that’s what I got.- it was a Parker pen which I think were expensive then and it came in its own case- very posh!

Ballet and tap lessons and piano lessons. Again no money.
I started piano lessons when I was 15 and did really well, but tap had to wait until my children were old enough to go. The teacher, realising there was a group of enthusiastic mothers, started a class and now there’s one at the gym, so I’ve dusted off my tap shoes.

Lorna Hill books - all my friends were in love with Sebastian. There was also the horrible cousin Fiona and her nice sister Caroline. I always thought it very clever of Lorna Hill to combine ballet and ponies - what more could you want?

I was another who wanted riding lessons, and my mother said I could have them if I passed the 11+. I did pass, but by then I had gone off ponies and only cared about ballet, which I did for years.

I really wanted a baby sister but didn't get one sad
I also wanted a dog and after much begging I got one! He was a standard poodle. We called him Danny and I really loved him smile

A Bike.. My mum wouldn't get us one as we lived in the city. However as a teenager I did get Horse Riding lessons, never understood that logic, when I asked her, she just shrugged her shoulders!

I would have loved to have a pony.

Me too.
I was convinced I would get one, too, when I was really little.

HettyBetty Tue 02-Jul-24 13:39:55

A certain Lego set which was apparently too expensive, ie more than a few shillings.

I got one on Ebay a few years ago, probably for about 100 times the original cost 😂

I wanted long hair.
Mine was kept short, as it was thin and fine, but I wanted long, black, beautiful hair.

DanniRae Tue 02-Jul-24 13:48:54

Hi Witzend ........ Were the ponies you longed to have ride on in an arcade in Croydon? I think the arcade I am thinking of was in a shop called Kennards. We used to visit Croydon every week and if I was lucky we would eat in Lyons ..... now Macdonalds.... and I would have pie and chips with gravy on it!

I wanted a Sindy doll. All my friends had one and I really was hoping for one on Christmas morning. I didn't get one but my eight year-old sister did. When I asked why mum said I was nearly ten and too big for dolls. I got a games compendium instead.

I loved Brownies and wanted to go to Guides. Mum said she couldn't afford the uniform. The only reason I got to go to Brownies was because Brown Owl had a stock of spare uniforms.

Then at primary school we had the chance to learn a musical instrument. I took a violin home. Mother ordered me to take it back because she couldn't put up with the noise. I never did learn to play an instrument.

Mum was heart broken when I married and left home at 18. I was working, earning money and I was determined to do and have things I wanted.

I later had six children of my own and made sure they had everything they needed and some things they really wanted. They also had music lessons if they wanted them and plenty of other opportunities.

My littlest granddaughter wants a unicorn. A real unicorn. DS and DDil are going to arrange for her to ride a pony.

nightowl Tue 02-Jul-24 14:01:40

Like many others I wanted a pony. I had to wait until I was 62 to get my own (the most stupid but the best thing I ever did).

I desperately wanted a dog, but mum said no. When I was 14 I found a dog in a field, miles from anywhere. My mum did all the right things, reported her to the police (in fact she tried to hand her over to them but they refused grin) but no one claimed her so she became part of our family for 12 years. Although I loved her dearly she always loved my mum the most hmm

I wanted a brother (& a swing). I was an only child and lucky enough to have ballet, piano & riding lessons, a bike & roller skates. It was only much later that I found out my Mum had a still born boy before I was born and having me all but killed her. It must have been painful to hear me begging for a brother. She told me she was ‘too old’. I didn’t get the swing either!

TerriBull Tue 02-Jul-24 14:22:43

A dog! My father didn't like dogs at all. At various junctures my brother and I brought back a kitten, after much moaning and groaning we were allowed to keep them. In his own way my father kind of like them, he was always giving them bits of fish or chicken leftovers and generally indulging them food wise. My mother and I both adored cats from our earliest days.

Sarnia

I yearned for a comb case, of all things. My friend had one and I thought it so lovely. It was made of black watered silk with bright flowers embroidered along the front. When I went to play at her house I always made a bee-line for her dressing table to hold this case. You can imagine my sheer delight when she gave me one just like hers at my next birthday party. Simple pleasures.

I bought one of these for my lovely aunt one Christmas, Sarnia.
I saved up through the year for gifts. I think my parents paid half of that one.

Grannybags Tue 02-Jul-24 14:28:23

Apart from a pony I longed for a bedroom of my own. I never got the pony but eventually when I was 16 I got the bedroom when my sister got married. She was 24 and I thought she was ancient and was never going to go!

Bumface Tue 02-Jul-24 14:30:56

Long hair, my mother used to take me to have it cut short every four weeks. A black standard poodle. And, of course, a pony.

Curlywhirly Tue 02-Jul-24 14:31:31

I too wanted to grow my hair long, but wasn't allowed to. I obviously had a fascination with long hair and desperately wanted a Tressy Doll ( she had short hair, but you could transform her hair by pressing a button on her back and a long pony tail could be pull out of the top of her head - genius!). Mum couldn't afford one, so I kept calling on a girl who lived in our street, just so I could play with her Tressy 😅 Needless to say, I grew my hair to elbow length when I was a teenager and love styling my young granddaughter's beautiful long hair.

Juggernaut Tue 02-Jul-24 14:38:48

I desperately wanted curly hair!
My hair's still absolutely straight now, but I can work miracles with a blow dryer!
Of course if I dare to step outside the house with my hair 'done' it instantly turns poker straight again!

I had a Tressy, but I really wanted a Sindy.
