Can you spot the difference? Isn't it wonderful what a good iron and presentation will do?
I have bought two items from NFYM and I am delighted with them (and man am I fussy) Obviously, a Chinese Wholesale/Manufacturer branching out.

Sorry to say, but anyone wishing to buy 100% British is on a hiding to nothing these days.
Like it or lump it, India and China at least contribute to most goods we buy.
Hence our clean co2 record. Only possible because we exported our manufacturing industries.

Thank you for posting Boz it's always nice to look at pretty things outside of our normal range.

Because you mentioned above that you have an interest in fashion. Do you follow any particular blogger/channel on youtube?

I follow some who knit or crochet their own designs. It's lovely to see other peoples creations.

I have always loved craft work; I knitted and sewed in my youth and love to learn the construction of garments.
No I don't follow the blogs - can you recommend any?
I just love oriental clothes; kimonos and jackets and anything that is easy-fitting colourful and warm! A lightly padded jacket is of great comfort to an old woman and if it is in a nice uplifting colour, so much the better.

Jane - thank you . I'll have a look .

They are really easy - I don't need a pattern .
Someone has stolen the nice hareems that I made !

You have to be careful where you shop and where the raw materials come from. Not everything is made abroad, or with materials from abroad. You might have to pay more but isn’t it better to buy one quality British item than several cheap foreign ones?

Namsnanny Thu 04-Jul-24 21:53:33

Of course. 👍
I'm just wondering what goods you are referring to?
Food, mechanical, industrial, medical, clothing?

rafichagran Thu 04-Jul-24 22:21:43

Auntieflo

OK for some, but not for me.

They both look as though they have been made from the bags of offcuts on The Great British Sewing Bee.

Reminds me of those patchwork bedspreads, but alot of folk like them.
Generally clothes that are cheap are made in China, some people can't afford anything else. So no judgement from me.

Aldom Thu 04-Jul-24 22:37:25

Germanshepherdsmum just wondering if you would mind sharing with us where you source your British Made clothes.
I buy from reputable companies, but it's not often I see a Made in Britain label these days.

NotSpaghetti Thu 04-Jul-24 22:56:42

John Smedley make their knitwear here.

NotSpaghetti Thu 04-Jul-24 23:10:04

Obviously also the tailors - Jermyn Street etc. and shirt makers such as Emma Willis.
And Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing and the beautiful Eas Fors.
I think Bombshell has gone into administration.

NotSpaghetti Thu 04-Jul-24 23:11:03

The thing they have in common is not exactly cheap.

Deedaa Thu 04-Jul-24 23:13:23

Foreign made clothes are hardly new. I was buying a lot of Indian made clothes in the 60s and 79s. Remember all that cheesecloth we were swathed in?

Namsnanny Fri 05-Jul-24 13:08:49

Yes I do Deedaa😄 I had 2 outfits that I loved literally until they died (wore out). Quilted bolero waist coat with full length matching skirt ( and obligatory 70's boots, no matter the weather🤣). With a paisley pattern decorating them.
Oh did I think I was the bees knees.
My first car, a decent wage, free to go and do as I liked.
Paisley pattern and cheesecloth will always remind me of those happy days.

Bumface Fri 05-Jul-24 13:33:54

Even Marks and Spencer (gasp) no longer buy British.
"Clothing and Home products are sourced from: Bangladesh, China, Cambodia, Vietnam, India, Turkey and Sri Lanka."
They say that they are mindful of human rights and strive to maintain fair trade.

It is a great shame that, although they import from all these countries, their regional stores mainly stock rather boring clothes. Still I suppose they have to stock what sells best to their clientele in order to stay solvent.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 13:49:38

The company Germansheperdsmum mentioned are ethical, but it's not practical to buy one jumper every two years for most families.

Germanshepherdsmum Fri 05-Jul-24 15:19:17

I didn’t mention them actually.

I buy very few clothes, no more than one or two things a year, generally tops. Something has to wear out before I replace it. I live a very quiet life nowadays and my old ‘going out’ things and tailored items I have had for years. My long black ‘work’ coat is all of 15 years old and still in perfect condition despite the daily commute - it was an expensive buy but the cost per wear must be tiny. Not British though, Italian.

My favourite and most worn jacket is over 20 years old, probably 25, made by Viyella and still good - it has a zip out lining so can be worn all year. British - I think they only make men’s shirts now.

Quite a few of my jumpers and tops for wearing with jeans are actually men’s ones. They tend to be a little bit longer than ladies’ and also plain - I don’t do prints or frills. I like Sunspel (almost everything made in Britain) and Joseph Turner, a Yorkshire company manufacturing in Britain and using British wool. Sunspel are pricey but so well made and last well. Both have plenty of choice and good reductions in their sales.

Allsorts Fri 05-Jul-24 15:30:28

Your intensions were good Boz but i didn't like items, they looked poorly finished, no style and prefer to buy from this country. Our workers are paid a reasonable wage and in safe conditions. I prefer to pay a little more for quality and add interest with accessories. Don't buy anything with air miles if i can help it.

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 15:35:31

Oh apologies Gsm I've just seen it wasnt you. blush

NotSpaghetti Fri 05-Jul-24 15:44:53

I don't think Viyella is the same as it was. It was bought out in the 1980s by Coats Paton. Not sure if they are still around. It was part of the portfolio of someone from QPR (football) for a very short while and maybe now is an Austin Reed label.

These iconic old brands ardoften just a name now.

NotSpaghetti Fri 05-Jul-24 15:50:00

Germanshepherdsmum - do you remember the Levis advert where the man undresses in the launderette?

I think the dazzling white boxers the model wore for that ad were made by Sunspel.

NotSpaghetti Fri 05-Jul-24 15:54:42

Forgot to add, it has a factory shop:

Not sure if the boxers were what viewers were concentrating on NotSpaghetti 🤣

MissAdventure Fri 05-Jul-24 16:16:01

Nick Cayman, I think was the guy in the advert. (Somerh8ng like that)

It was actually the guitar riff that I I loved.

The Smith's.
Great ad all round, I'd say.
