Pyjamas as day wear?

I went to a New Year's Eve party in my nightie when I was nine months pregnant. It was ankle length and silky and I was complemented on my "dress". I danced the night away and my daughter was born a few days later.

I happened to drive past a primary school when parents were walking children in a few were wearing dressing gown and slippers, not a pretty sight. It’s nothing about fashion or style it’s just idleness - too lazy to get dressed, or even put a brush through their hair.

You would have been horrified by our school the other day then.
All the children and most of the staff came in nightwear to promote bedtime stories or just reading for pleasure. 😁😁😁

I can't understand it, its easy enough to pull on some joggers and a top. Over the nightwear even.

I am wearing in bed similar pjs to the opening photo, but in navy and white.
And I just thought would I wear them to Waitrose this morning? Good lord no. Although I would colour match my shopping trolley.

I’ve never seen anyone out in their PJs here, ever. Bathers, yes, but not PJs. You wouldn’t wear the ones here they, are not that nice. I think more people were nightdresses. Haven’t seen anyone in those, either,come to that.

I think it is up to the individual just what they wear but I would never wear pyjamas to go out of the house in. Never venture as far as the bins in mine. Showered and dressed as soon as I get up.

J live in a diverse area. Both men and women wear "pajama like" clothes on occasions, particularly weddings. There are other women who are wearing the niquab and completely veiled outside the house. I think the only thing that would offend people here are very revealing clothes.

I dont see its any of the school what women wear to drop off their children, There are far worse offences when dropping off your children than wearing Pjs, Thinking of bad and unsafe parking, blocking residents drives, and so on.

What about nighties? The ones I saw in MandS looked pretty enough to be worn as dresses.
But generally, I think that unless you're ill, it's lazy not to put on clothes in the morning.

In the summer of 1972, when 8 months pregnant with my second child, I saw two nighties in M&S which flared from the shoulders,
.I wore these as maternity dresses and no one knew the difference.

Popular at first them considered to be slovenly .
I look back at the way my mother and my grandmother dressed when going out .
A bath , full make up (in Grandma's case rather unsuccessful dabbing at her cheeks with rouge ) corsets like straitjackets , a pressed suit or dress and handbags matching shoes with a hat and gloves .
Otherwise , Grandma said that only street women went out incorrectly dressed .
Even going out with your coat open was considered fast as for smoking ,talking loudly and laughing "like a hyena " -doomed you to a life of prostitution .
My Grandma was dressed appropriately until the day she died .
I noticed that my mother finally relaxed about corsets when she was about 70 .
I've let myself go she told me as she stopped going out , going on holidays and eating a lot of crisps , sweets chocolates , cakes , biscuits and puddings washed down with brandy in a tea cup as it was medicinal .

She admired our neighbour's pyjamas .
She like many women love them .
There have been complaints and notices at some schools when dropping children off and collecting them wearing pyjamas .

I quite like them .
I wear Kaftans a lot .
I also like shalwar kameez ,because like pyjamas they are so comfortable .
I think that I only wear bras if going out .
The sheer bliss of not wearing one .
I hate tights .
I only wear them if it's formal .
The only place where I'm guaranteed to be dressed properly is church .

Agree 100%. So long as people are clean and decently covered what does it matter? I dont care enough about my neighbours and strangers in the street to worry about what they are wearing.

As an antique dealer I sometimes (in my mind) regret the passing of the gracious fashions and manners of the past. However people were slaves to etiquette. Many of these casual usages became common during lockdown and people have other priorities now.

Didn't Churchill wear pyjamas during the day? Holding meetings and so on? I've never seen women in PJs shopping but I wouldn't be bothered by it and don't feel bits being slovenly ( whatever that means).
Shirley what demographic wears pyjamas day and night? I'm mystified.

I bought these summer pj’s this week ready for Oz. . the jacket would do very well as a shirt with shorts or jeans. It’s loose and a bit boxy. I wouldn’t feel uncomfortable wearing it in public but not with the trousers (especially as they are at least 8” too long 🤣)

Is pippa's a jumpsuit? They are different to pyjamas.I like the idea of them but i doubt i could manage getting it up/down quickly enough for the loo😅

I thought would never go out in my pjs . . . until, going to collect DH I forgot I had navy blue pj bottoms on instead of joggers. We shopped in Booths on the way back.
I hope no one on GN noticed. 🤭

I try not to be judgemental - not always easy. I wouldn't go out in my pj's, but don't object to others.
Having said that, I do wear a nightie not pj's, and have been known to open the front door in my dressing gown. Is that OK?

Opening the door in my dressing gown, not quite as good as opening the door in my pyjamas but the next best thing.

I live in the north of England and can remember seeing mams on the school run in pyjamas one school sent a letter out telling the parents to dress appropriately for dropping children off at school! I get to 8pm and get into my nightie and dressing gown hoping no one will visit😂🫣

In the early 70s, there was a fashion for wearing 'hostess gowns' which were flimsier material than dresses, full length & slightly elasticated at the back.
They were cheaper than dresses and I believe it was because of being classed as nightwear, but I may be wrong about that.

I have a pair of trousers, dark blue with big white spots, that Tesco thought were pyjamas but I like to wear casually in the daytime, including going out in them if I feel like it.
I'd never go out in pyjamas I'd been wearing at night, tho, except to put the bin out!
