Downton Abbey electrical curling tongs.

I am just watching the Downtown Abbey series for the second time.

I was amazed to see a maid curling Lady Mary's hair with an electric curling tong which was not invented until 1959.

When I first saw the episode I thought where on earth was this curling tong when I was a teenager in the late 50's, I had to use rollers.

I know they used curling tongs which were heated on the fire like flat irons used to be but showing an electric curling tong in the Downtown Abbey series supposedly in 1919 is a gross error.

As you appear so determined to be both “insulted” and “offended” I shall say no more!

Btw there’s nothing wrong with looking like a “bag lady”, so long as one is clean and well groomed, some of us just prefer to be comfy and casual when out, some like to doll themselves up.

That’s fine, neither is right nor wrong, both are fine 😊

If what you say is true, then why did GSM call me old fashioned for using tongs, dressing up when I go out and like being waited on. That is my priviledge

I am not afraid afraid to defend myself to GSM just because she does not agree with people for the way they live, but it appears that if GSM disagrees with a poster GSM always thinks she is right. Not a nice trait to have.

I don’t think Matilda does smart casual.

Oh yes I do and look very smart as well. I have come to the conclusion GSM that you love to pick on anything to cause an argument.

As far as I am concerned, you are not worth my time.

Can you not understand that the comment about sounding a little old fashioned was not related to the curling tongs? How many times do I have to say it was related to your post about dressing up and liking waitress service before you understand it?

Then why not say that instead of insinuating it was about the curling tongs. You must make it clear when posting what you are actually commenting on otherwise mistakes like this will happen.

Nonsense.

GSM

Nonsense????????, it is there in black and white, dated and time stamped.

Apologise when you are wrong.

Fgs Matilda, I have not said that using curling tongs makes anyone old fashioned. That is a figment of your imagination. Now you think I have insulted everyone who takes care of their appearance.

GSM

Below is your post (copied and pasted) stating I was old fashioned for using tongs, if you did not mean what you stated then next time, ensure you state exactly what you do mean........

"Each to their own! And thank goodness I don’t use curling tongs! You sound, dare I say, a little old fashioned."

Now let us put an end to something that should never have been started because of your personal remarks.

What does it matter if someone is or sounds or seems “old fashioned” - it’s not an insult! It’s an observation.

We are all very different.

I wear mainly jeans and nice blouses and lovely sketcher trainers when out or floaty dresses and sandals, I cannot bear “dressing up”, but I love waitress service when out, I have some tongs and straighteners as have mad hair.

Live and let live ladies.

Life is too short 😊😊

Observing is saying nothing but stating it is an insult.

The thread has become another game ,

My goodness, from an innocent observation about a telly programme to nasty personal remarks. How sad.

Daddima,

I totally agree with you. Being called old fashioned by GSM for using tongs on my hair, dressing up when I go out and enjoying waitress /waiter service beggars belief.

In my opinion GSM has insulted every person who takes care of their appearance and enjoys the good things in life.

I started this thread as a light hearted mention of electric tongs being used in Downtown Abbey in 1918 and then get insulted by GSM.

Do me a favour GSM, please do not acknowledge any more of my posts on these forums.

Oh don't get me started on modern dress codes (or rather the lack of them). Pjs and slippers whilst out and about......lol.

Lack of social graces, poor table manners, loud obnoxious argumentative people. You get the gist......

Unfortunately the word "lady" seems to be pejorative these days, anyone who has aspirations to be ladylike is often mocked and jeered at.

So I use the term "gentlewoman". I aim to be dignified, well spoken, well behaved, well mannered, courteous, thoughtful, kind and yes nicely turned out and suitably attired for the occasion,

Scruffs when I'm gardening, doing d.i.y or heavy duty cleaning and then scrubbing up nicely and being suited and booted when out and abouting.

It's all about standards. And you're right, if you look good you will often receive better standards of customer service, upgrades and the like.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 17-Jul-24 13:18:01

I look good when I go out, but don’t ‘get dressed up’. I also look good when at home. You will usually find me wearing jeans and trainers, but never looking like a bag lady.

Having baby fine hair I use curling tongs and sometimes rollers to try and make my hair look thicker and give it a lift. These are not old fashioned methods for hair styling. Both are still used regularly by catwalk models, actors etc. A good cut will take you far but unless you are very lucky hair still needs help with styling tools and products.

I can't see anything wrong with feeling like you were "born to be a lady." It's a nice fantasy, 😉. And sadly, much of yesteryears olde world charm has been lost in the hurly burly of modern life,

I too opt to be waited on in restaurants. I loathe self service restaurants and cafes. I don't think that's old fashioned, it just seems a more pleasant and civilised experience and certainly a lot easier than queuing, and then faffing around with a tray of food and paying at a till. I much prefer to be seated, handed a menu and then waited on.

I also hate supermarket self service checkouts.. It's bad enough having to spend my precious time food shopping in the first place let alone grapple with an obstreperous scanning machine.

I also prefer to be a passenger than a driver, much nicer to sit and watch the scenery rather than battle my way through traffic.

I see nothing wrong with enjoying being served, waited on and chauffeured. If you can afford to pay a little extra for these services then why not.

"Why have a dog and bark yourself". 🤪

Dear Derbyshirelass.

Thank you for acknowledging that there are still people out there who love to be waited on, still love to get dressed up when they go out and still maintain a sense of dignity. If that is classed as being old fashioned then I am definitly old fashioned.

I would rather be old fashioned and look good when I go out than go out in trainers, tight leggings etc. etc. and look like a bag lady which many people of today do. Having principles is nothing to be ashamed of and no, I am never overlooked in a cafe or restaurant and long may it last.

Show me where I have said that everyone who uses curling tongs is old fashioned . I haven’t. I said you sounded old fashioned yesterday after your post saying you were born to be lady and always went for waitress service.

You are now stating that I sound old fashioned because I said I was born to be a lady and liked waitress service instead of self service. WOW, you are digging a deeper and deeper hole.

Why can't you just accept that I like to dress up when I go out, tong my hair and wear makeup, instead of being called old fashioned for it.

GSM these are your comments calling everyone that uses Curling tongs old fashioned. Disgusting.

MatildaMay Wed 17-Jul-24 11:56:44

Everyone does not use curling tongs. What a silly statement.

You stated that using curling tongs is old fashioned. You have changed your comments to suit yourself. Now you say that everyone does not use curling tongs, of course they don't but just because they do use them does not make them old fashioned.

Go back and read your original comments and then apologise

MatildaMay Wed 17-Jul-24 11:51:02

That is not what you said, you said it was old fashioned to use curling tongs so you are saying all the young people and people of my age are old fashioned. Shame on you.

Beechnut Wed 17-Jul-24 11:50:00

I don’t use them. Mine are natural…different hairstyle everyday 😂
