Coal tar soap anyone?

Does anyone else use coal tar soap, the proper one made by wrights?

I’m having a lot of skin issues at the moment (spider bite) and then a sweat rash inside my elbow from too much crocheting.

Usually I use loads of different creams to heal these sort of things and shower with different shower gels. But I treated myself to a bar of old fashioned coal tar soap and it worked a treat. It’s not too drying and smells wonderful.

I’m just wondering if there’s any actual detergent in shower gels or is it all perfume and emollients.

Is there anything you would recommend?

DP likes this soap and uses it in the shower, says his skin always feels better after using.

We use soap in the shower too.

I look for triple milled soaps as the lye will be virtually gone.
Olive usually.
I look if I'm going through TKMaxx as often they have nice ones (not their own brand).

I have Wrights Coal Tar Soap (only they don’t mention the “coal” any more)
It was the only one DH could use and the smell reminds me of him.
Shower gels are the equivalent of using washing up liquid on your skin- smelling better if expensive enough - but to be avoided at all costs.

I have used castile soap for many years after a nasty bout of excema. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I love it. The bathroom always smells so ‘medically’ fresh when we use a bar of it! Maybe we do too …. 😊

Actually it's a while since I bought it now but this range of soaps are very kind to skin.

We used to buy this when the children were small and my son and daughter-in-law use their products all the time. It's an old company and no harsh chemicals.

I love the smell of Coal Tar!

However some of the nicest soap we ever had came in huge blocks from a BiL - he’d found a factory (for olive oil soap) in Marseille that was closing after many years, and selling off stock.
We had to slice it up, which wasn’t exactly easy, but it produced a lovely, gentle lather.

Ditto some lovely funny shaped bars I bought when we last visited the Isle of Skye. Too long since we’ve been back sadly.

Reminds me of my gran!

I always use soap bars, just because I'm too tight to buy body wash, and I love coal tar, and imperial leather.

I'd forgotten coal tar, but now I'll have to get some. smile

My late husband always used Wright Coal Tar soap, his skin was wrinkle free when he died at the age of 79.

DH’s favourite soap. He loves a good scrub with it

The lovely clean smell of it takes me right back to my grandmother’s bathroom in the 1940s.

When DS was young had an unidentifiable rash on his back the doctor prescribed coal tar shampoo used as a body wash, it worked to take the irritation away.
DH’s Dermatologist advises Sanex as a shower gel.

Very occasionally I buy a bar just to sniff it. It is just such a clean and evocative smell.

I use Dove soap in the shower. Anything else does not agree with my skin. Used it for years. Love the smell of Wrights Coal Tar bars of soap.

We use Pears soap in the shower. Not only does it avoid bringing plastic bottles into the house, it also avoids waste as when the bar gets very small it fits into the new bar.

Yes, use it all the time. Great!👍

I use it all the time. I have psoriasis and in the 70's used to have a thick ointment that absolutely reeked of coal tar to treat plaque psoriasis. I now have strong medications for psoriasis but love the smell ...

Years ago dd had a sort of eczema. The dr prescribed coal tar baths. The coal tar came in emollient form, turned the water brown, and left a disgusting ring on my pale blue plastic bath. It cured the eczema and also inhaling the bath water opened the airways and cured any cold I might have whilst giving dd her bath.

Wow, seems like good stuff. It’s a shame soap has gone out of fashion and shower gels are heavily advertised.

JamesandJon33 Mon 22-Jul-24 05:34:40

Does anyone remember the coal tar burners, used for heavy colds and coughs?

Isn't soap back in fashion? Or rather bars are so you get shower bars and hair shampoo bars to save on plastic packaging.
