112
The horn. Use only while your vehicle is moving and you need to warn other road users of your presence. Never sound your horn aggressively. You MUST NOT use your horn

while stationary on the road
when driving in a built-up area between the hours of 11.30 pm and 7.00 am

except when another road user poses a danger.

I was always taught that the horn was to ‘announce my presence, not to demand another’s absence’.

Thanks for the image,
unfortunately I always have my speakers on mute,
so I can't here anything, only images.

Hmm! When my friend and I travelled to work together, we found that some young men just couldn't handle the fact that 2 old blondes might have nicer, faster cars than theirs. We had to "notify them of our presence" often after they had carved us up and then slowed down in front of us "just because they could" (though in actual fact, "just because we let them - my friend was an ex lady racing driver!! )- silly boys - so dangerous! It led to interesting discussions though as to how big (or probably small) their apppendage was that they found this necessary and in the end, it happened so often we just used to raise our little finger to each other, declare "very small" and giggle! We had some interesting journeys! One van passed us shouting and making suggestive remarks, then after overtaking realised that the blond heads in the convertible in front belonged to women who were old enough to be their mothers. Very, very small!

Last night I was driving in the 20mph zone, a black car right on my bumper was using the horn clearly to tell me to hurry up.

I find OP’s question a very passive/aggressive way to say that where he lives, people use their car horn a lot.
(Is it specifically at you, OP?) grin
Where I live the noise pollution you refer to, simply is not an issue.
In any case I would be more worried about air quality in cities, and of course river and beach pollution as a direct threat to our health

Its just unbelievable, when you have drivers who have those ear plug things, so what their listening too goes straight down their ear holes, not to mention those who don't know where the up/down window handle is

And as for ear pods which is what I assume you are referring to, what business is it of any of us?
(Windows don’t have winders any more either- a little button on the door opens and shuts them! )
However I hope you feel better for venting.

I think most British people are timid horn users.

Not really,I was car less for the last few days and walking about and sitting on various bus stops and bus's,and hearing the amount of horns being blown, including the bus driver/s.

You should try driving through Cairo😂 they have one hand on the wheel and the other on the horn, Israel isn’t much better.

Mojack26 Mon 29-Jul-24 14:22:26

Yes I am aware. Couldn't tell you rule no!🤣I've been driving for 50 years now and that has always been a rule

Soniah Mon 29-Jul-24 13:09:01

Go to India, it seems obligatory to use your horn

MayBee70 Mon 29-Jul-24 12:56:47

cc

One of my main memories of India is the traffic noise of drivers honking all the time.

Ditto Naples at rush hour!

Cant rrmember the last time I used my horn until yesterday. I was behind a driver at temporary traffic lights and they turned green. Instead of going forwards he started rolling backwards as we were on an incline! Fortunately there was enough room between us and he realised as soon as I used my horn. Phew!

Missiseff Mon 29-Jul-24 12:35:09

Oh dear. I use mine in anger.

knspol Mon 29-Jul-24 12:31:03

My neighbours have electric gates with a key pad outside for the entrance code. On very regular occasions someone drives up to their property and sits in the car honking the horn until someone inside the house opens the gates for them to drive in. This usually takes more than a couple of minutes of constant blaring. They visit so frequently that I imagine they could be given the gate code or else maybe they're just too lazy to switch off their engine and get out of the car to use the code. Now that's annoying!

Otherwise known as ‘an audible warning instrument’…..

Bonnybanko Mon 29-Jul-24 07:17:23

I miss my car now I’m no longer driving due to a left handed stroke
I loved driving and I would drive to Edinburgh and Glasgow for work meetings however that bit was horrendous I preferred to drive more local

Is this something of an obsession OP?

1 April 2022 Why do drivers sound the horn to vent their anger?

1 April 2023 Only fools beep their horn

1 April 2024 Only fools beep their horns

And now today.

What happened?
Did somebody beep their horn at you?

Interesting!

infoman Mon 29-Jul-24 04:23:29

Is there not enough noise pollution in the World?
Lets not add to it unnecessarily when it can be avoided.

NotAGran55 Sun 28-Jul-24 22:00:01

Being beeped at was part of everyday life if I remember correctly - ‘back in the day’.

Did you ever do it Infoman?

Infoman You must be unlucky where you live. Car horns are not a problem in my neck of the woods.

MayBee70 Sun 28-Jul-24 19:12:09

Theexwife

My neighbours relatives sound the horn and wave when leaving, irritating.

That really really annoys me too!

Jaxjacky Sun 28-Jul-24 19:06:31

I’m sure there are lots of rules from the Highway Code I can’t quote and may inadvertently break, its many years since I revised that book.
