What would you swear on? (Light hearted)

I read in the newspaper today that a juror swore by the river he lives on (in a houseboat) to do his best to uphold justice while serving on the jury. He explained that he asked himself what was most important to him and decided it was the river. Fair dos.

At age 72, I'm not going to be called for jury service but, hypothetically, I'm considering the magnificent trees that line the road on the approach to the village where I live. I marvel at them every time I return home. They are enormous, deep green and kind of brooding.

So, remembering not to take this too seriously, what would you swear by?

(My son asks what's wrong with just declaring that you will do your best to uphold truth, the law and justice? Maybe that's allowed...)

If in public, even if I drop something I swear in French in hope that people around would not understand!

In court I would affirm. There is no book I revere sufficiently to swear upon.

When I was a child of 10 I learned that honest people who tell the truth are not always believed. So often it is the clever liars who prosper in life.

I don't think swearing on a river is silly at all, bit eccentric is all.

Never heard of anything like swearing on a river. Sounds ridiculous, why couldn't he just affirm? Jurors all have the option of swearing on different religious 'books' or affirming.

I do sort of get it that someone would swear by a life-giving natural feature. Am I right that this man is a solicitor with particular interest in Nature?

But this is light-hearted , so...my collection of Bill Bryson books.
(My favourite writer).

No. It's horrible on many levels. It's basically saying that their lives are something that belong to you, and that they can be traded for your advantage.
