I am so surprised by that story

If you are happy to walk in to a space clearly labelled as "men only", where is the respect you want back?

And given that anyone seems to be able to walk into the changing space not labelled for them, what makes women's spaces safe from the same?

The answer seems to be a locked door and it doesn't seem to matter where that locked door is judging by that story

our M&S has changing cubicles for females and a changing cubicle by the men’s clothing area.
When carrying in some shorts and a polo shirts for DH and some underwear for me (I’d already tried it) I had it pointed out to me on two separate occasions, that this changing room was for men only.
Tut tut! Men wanting single sex changing rooms? Well, yes, it seems some do.

The large M&S near us has had a refurb and their changing rooms are now mixed. Even though the cubicles have locks I do not like it as I like to go out of the cubicle and look in the mirrors there but when I was there there was a group of men discussing the trousers they were trying on.

So the men were not interested in you they were discussing the trousers just as I would discuss a dress if I had a friend there. I don't see the problem.

They were men I didn't know and I like a woman only place to try clothes on like we used to have. The men were very loud and had taken over the whole outside space within the changing rooms. At least the lingerie changing rooms are so far women only.

Men's and gender neutral toilets - no women's !!?? Is there something sinister going on ? Are women being slowly disregarded, we are no longer breast feeders but chest feeders and are people with vaginas - subtle changes but hugely significant ones.
Please tell me if I have this out of all proportion, just feeling depressed about our increasingly violent society, and despair at the behaviour of some young people. In the library yesterday 3 young boys entered
aged about 15. They began verbally abusing the librarian, knocking books off shelves , jeering and shouting and racing round . It was very scary, the librarian picked up the phone to call the police and they scarpered! What is the answer?

That will only happen if woman continue to let it happen- I would & will complain if I had to change where there are fellas ( I am quite shy), I used to love the sauna on day off, new sports centre made it mixed, I never went back after going for 15 yrs. same with the toilets, some men haven’t got the hygiene habits so I don’t want to follow in after them 😩 we need to make a stand! Trans gender people need their own spaces too, in separate areas from men/woman. We woman are slowly being erased

Mostly that’s what they have here. Male ,female and ‘unisex’. Funny though, most use male or female and the other one isn’t used. I don’t want to see an array of mens’ dicks when I go to the toilet, thanks.

If I understand you correctly, you mean mixed toilets. Unfortunately the antics of some males made that unacceptable (if it ever was).
Male and female toilets or female and open (anyone can use them) toilets.
Same would work for those who want gender neutral changing rooms.
Female (for use only by females and gender neutral changing rooms so the Dads mentioned by VS can try things on with small children (I’m still wondering how acceptable that is).

Everyone who comes to these threads saying they don't mind gender neutral spaces has the caveat that those spaces are secure and supervised where possible

Which I think is reasonable

Although I much prefer female only toilets and changing rooms earlier today I used a gender neutral changing cubicle in an Outlet store and felt perfectly safe. Two female staff members on duty and a door from floor to just below ceiling height with a reassuring lock. I’d not use gender neutral changing cubicles with just curtains and have never used a communal changing room.

Currently attending outpatients twice a week at our local hospital I use a gender neutral toilet cubicle with its own hand basin, again with a door from floor to almost ceiling that locks with a reassuring clunk. There’s no choice. Nothing else available in that area. Again while I’d prefer to have a female only space I’m far less uncomfortable with the arrangement than Mr C who has to use these toilets while waiting for me as he says he is always glared at by women entering or leaving the area. He’d much prefer a male only space. Why on Earth can’t there be separate spaces everywhere?

I just thought jumping on us for expressing our personal opinion on whether we were happy to use mixed facilities was OTT, I don’t disagree with there being separate facilities available for those who want them, be they female, or for that matter, male.

I understand what namsnanny is saying. Consent doesnt work like that. It's fine for some people not to mind, but some women do and their consent matters. Therefore single sex spaces need to be provided. If some women want to share spaces with men they are of course free to go to the mixed sex provision.
But also JaneJudge has been really clear about the need for single sex provision.

Our local Fatface only has 2 changing rooms. Males and females use either, same situation at the Costa a few doors down. On holiday in Madeira, in a small cafe, the 2 toilet doors said Male/Female/Whatever.
However, in the case of somewhere as big as the Barbican, giving men their own urinals but expecting women to share their space with men is hardly gender neutral.
