I used to love the book "Little Black Sambo" in which the hero wins by quick thinking. It never occurred to me that it might be thought to be racist, but then, I am neither black not Indian. If I were, I might have thought differently.

I loved that book and thought the 2 boys would like it too so I bought a new copy. When my SIL was making up their beds he found it and hid it from them.

Macadia I do believe you are right that MissAdventure wrote those things on a different thread. It was a bit confusing that's all that it wasn't on this thread.

I remember my brothers and their friends playing the 'Chicken' game - one of my brothers got the knife in his shin and got a telling off and a trip to the doctors. His worst crime though was bleeding all over the back step that had to be washed clean

We also had 'drawer sleepers' in the family. There were a lot of people in our house and not enough beds or space.

MiL also mentioned that MrA and his sister slept in drawers. They had a one bedroom house and his sister slept with them once she was old enough, and MrA had the drawer.

I remember being sent to the shop (eatly 70s) with a note from my mum under strict instructions to give it only to the lady. It was for tampax.
Lighting the gas fire by tearing a strip off the newspaper and using the gas cooker in the kitchen and running through to the living room with the burning bit of paper, turning on the gas fire and then lighting it.
Walking everywhere. Out during the summer holidays on my bike and knowing when it was time to eat.
I got the belt once at school as person next to me spoke and I said what so I got caught talking.

My children and grandchildren have all had a bath in my kitchen sink...much kinder on my back, I remember ironing my hair straight, I suppose a bit like today straighteners!
Used to hitch hike up and down the country to concerts and festivals .

Oh goodness I'd forgotten about ST belts. All getting entangled with the suspender belt. Horrors.

The older boys used to play it in the park while us junior age girls watched, fascinated and scared in equal measure.

I got the cane quite a lot because my parents told me to look after my younger sister so I was always sticking up for her and fighting with other girls who were picking on her.

Also tin bath and outside toilet. Does anyone remember the Quatermass Experiment and the Trollenberg terror tv shows. Frightened me to death and I had to go to the outside toilet with a candle in a jam jar before going to bed and we had a potty under the bed.

My DH told me that when he walked to school his feet hurt and it was later found out that rats would clew on his toenails as he slept, as a little boy.

With this, and the ‘ready churned’ butter, I feel your husband has a vivid imagination.
I’m also surprised that, along with your other memories, you used sanitary pads with adhesive, as all I can remember as a young girl were the ones with loops which attached to a belt, or were pinned on to knickers. Adhesive pads didn’t appear until the 1970s.

We had steam trains running at the bottom of our garden and we also used to go and put pennies on the tracks to be flattened.
We used to stand on the bridge when the steam trains went under, I can still remember the smell, wonderful.

When you bent down they used to ride up your back, what a mess we were in.

I remember mum pouring the cream from the top of the milk and putting it in a jar with a lid and we would shake it until it turned into butter. Mum also had a jar with paddles inside and a handle that you turned and that also made butter. I know we were poor but we had a fantastic childhood, always loved and always well fed as many of the dads grew their own vegetables or had small allotments. We had a goat called nanny and a few chickens.

Making a swing around the lamppost with old rope, skipping rope that stretched the width of the street...a car a rare sight, only the posh people and doctors had one.

I don’t suppose the younger generation would think much of the dessert my old mum served up some times, tinned peaches and evaporated milk. But I loved it and still do.

Goodness! Have they changed the pictures? There was a confusion between whether the family was Indian or African. I know there were others by the same author, but I don't remember ever reading them.

You're right - "they all turned into melted butter, or ghee as it is called in India" if my memory serves!

Sitting in the dicky seat at the back of our father's car - open to the elements and obviously no seat belts. And the joys of living on a farm - seeing who could hold on to the electric fence longest, playing in the grain silos and crawling over the pig sty on a very dodgy roof for a dare - terrified that we would fall in among the pigs and be eaten. Amazing we survived.

My mother used to cook cut up hearts and giblets for our dogs, they never had canned food.
One thing that sticks in my mind is being hit repeatedly on the back of my hand by a teacher, for something I hadn't done. There would be an outcry now!

My Dad sent me to the local garage with a milk jug for some "top-up" for the car battery. Batteries are lead/acid aren't they? I was told not to spill any. I assumed the liquid was acid. It was only much later I found out it was distilled water.
