Breakfasts in hotels

I’m going away for a few days with my husband. It’s a place we go on special occasions. The hotel we stay in does a glorious breakfast. Fruit, yogurts, toasts, breads, cereals, pastries and jans. Then they do a really good cooked option. Generally we both just have the cooked option as it’s plenty. Other people seem to have loads of food before the cooked option.

My question is..is it extremely wrong to discretely put a couple of pastries or some bread, cheese and fruit in a zip lock bag so that we could have that for lunch? Or is it a complete no no šŸ™ƒ it’s not a budget hotel, we stay for dinner etc just wondered on others thoughts. Normally we would just buy a sandwich from M&S to share, which we may still do..

If anyone clutches their pearls just smile sweetly while inwardly hoping they choke themselves with them

What a charmer. Questioning possible thieving as if the questioner is wrong and not the food taker. No wonder morality is going to the dogs. I don't wear pearls by the way, and as for what you said, be careful as Starmers watchdogs will be getting you for incting harm to pearl wearers

I wouldn’t have to. If I’d put it on my food and couldn’t finish it, I’d ask for a doggy bag, but do keep on with the accusations.
John 8:7 is a good guideline.

That’s quite different from eating in hotels where many of them do buffet style food and people pinch pieces of fruit, cakes, croissants, bread rolls etc

Buffet style meals are more subject to people overloading their plates and leaving their food than they are to people taking extra for later.

Jane certainly wouldn't, as she has pointed out.
She'll be back from her holiday and this thread will still be going, I reckon.

You wouldn’t for example pinch condiments, bread, chutneys from a restaurant would you?

One of the meanest people I have ever known would always ask for a doggy bag to take home any food left on her plate when going out for a meal. It made me cringe. She was not remotely hard up.
I would not ever consider taking extra food for later. it is demeaning and would spoil the whole experience of having a meal out if I was with anyone who thought it was o.k. to be skulking around with bags of left over food.

You best not come out for tea with me then🤣.....I don't feel in the least demeaned when I ask to take a half eaten pizza home in a box .....I've paid for it .....who cares if its thrown out or taken home ....no one I know .

When we go out to eat in local restaurants (Indian, Malaysian, Thai, Italian to name a few) if there is food left over we are always asked if we would like to ^take it away^

Indeed - we were at a lovely Turkish restaurant in Edinburgh last week and we couldn't manage the whole meal, so the waitress asked if we would like it to take away.

I guess that men who nick stuff from buffets must put it in their pockets? šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø

Please put this thread behind you JaneJudge. I said ages ago that many people were being unnecessarily unpleasant. You have been called some very upsetting names. I for one, shall not be thinking anything of the sort when I see your name on GN. Have a lovely holiday and hide this thread. That way you won't be reminded. flowers smile

I agree. People who do this look real cheapskates.

Most good hotels will give you a free picnic lunch if you are going out for the day. There is no need to pinch stuff and, as kwest says ā€œskulk aroundā€.

Calendargirl

But the baked beans and tomatoes on the fried bread would make a right mess of the lining of the handbag.

Plus the greasy smell……

grin

True. Better start taking plastic 😱 bags. Maybe have a couple of extra napkins to soak up the juice.

Fried bread- mmmm. They seem to have substituted hash browns for that, Michael12.

With tourists who steal from the dining room it's not surprising that hotel keepers have become soulless money earners. I would not enjoy a holiday in someone else's pretty little town unless I respected the local people.

🤣🤣 gransnet at its best!

MissAdventure Tue 13-Aug-24 11:52:59

Ooh yes, I like either of those options, too.

Michael12 Tue 13-Aug-24 11:35:26

Hotel chains I have stayed give various different options , some are table service others self service , which Warners offer .
One thing I like but seldom see on breakfast menus is fried bread , covered with tomato's or baked beans.

Oh please don’t take the comments to heart JaneJudge. Go off and relax and enjoy your well deserved break and don’t give it another thought.

I hope you have a lovely time šŸ’šŸ„‚

Mollygo Tue 13-Aug-24 11:05:37

Oh dear Caleo.
What a contrived argument.
The implication that anyone (including those who were allowed to take a couple of things for later, or people who have doggy bags for food they cannot finish) is a thief and does not respect the local people is a bit OTT, unkind and IMO nasty and uncalled for.

Aveline Tue 13-Aug-24 11:00:28

JaneJudge don't be upset. At least you asked. You considered the situation and have made a sensible decision. Others have revealed themselves!

JaneJudge I have just come back from a holiday with DD and her boys.

There was a breakfast buffet.

We put a piece of fruit and a pastry in our bag for each of the boys as we knew they would be starving the minute we left the restaurant. On the one evening we had our dinner in the buffet restaurant I wrapped up some chicken gougons to take out as the 4yr old had fallen asleep as soon as we sat at the table, and missed dinner entirely.

Enjoy your holiday, please do not let this thread upset you 😘

Doodledog Tue 13-Aug-24 10:31:18

Oh Jane flowers

I understand why you must be feeling raw, but I'm certain you won't be thought of as anything of the kind. Daft things like this can be divisive (cf shoes indoors and which way to hang the loo roll grin) and there are so many horrible threads that a lot of people are probably gravitating to a supposedly less contentious one like this.

Chin up, and enjoy your holiday.
