Goodbye ASDA?

It's getting a really bad press in the media Business columns - has such a long established retailer had it's day?

The branch nearest to me was pretty well OK when it was under the Wallmart banner. Then the Issa Brothers came along and the nosedive began, on all levels.

Shabby, gaps on the shelves, harrassed looking staff and I'd swear that the stock in the household and soft furnishings dept. has been chucked at the shelves.

But we do have a lovely Aldi just half a mile up the road.....

It must depend partly on how each individual store is run.

Cadeby Wed 14-Aug-24 14:14:00

There is a definite Asda smell.

MissAdventure Wed 14-Aug-24 14:17:10

People used to be horrified at the idea of lidl or aldi shopping, with all sorts of wild theories and reasons why they wouldnt be seen dead in one.

I ignore all that and shop where money goes a long way.

So do I, I couldn't care less what other people might think of where I shop. I do most of mine at Aldi or Lidl, to be honest.

We’ve got a large Asda with clothing and a smaller one relatively local to us, my friend uses the large one and is very pleased with it. I’ve not heard any negative reports about the smaller one either.

MissAdventure Wed 14-Aug-24 14:46:05

I'd choose Lidl, if I could get there, just as much for the different things they sell, as the prices.

I need to work out a way where the taxi fare wouldnt equal my savings.

BlueBelle Wed 14-Aug-24 14:51:12

Certainly never heard anything negative about our Asda I go most weeks it’s a 15 minute walk there and 15 min back so I get my steps in too
I can get to Aldi but don’t find that any better than Asda I d need a taxi to get to Lldl it’s not on bus route or if it is they are very few and far between
I hope it’s not goodbye it certainly doesn’t need to be here

Ours nearest is over a mile away it's really shabby broken front entrance and exit doors for months. Customers have to enter and exit from one door that barely works.

There was some mutterings a while back within the industry and by retail analysts that it was inevitable that our traditional supermarkets would begin to feel the effects of Aldi and Lidl in the long term and it was likely to be the one with generally the same customer profile - which is Asda.

Even Waitrose had had to up their game a bit recently and do something about their hugely inflated prices.

My local Asda is really good. Well stocked, clean and spacious. Online orders have hardly any substitutes. Usually a few manned tills and the self service ones work very well. Good range of brands, clothing and home goods.

Have some basic standards, at least

Are you implying I don’t? (Bliddy rude if so.)
And shouty capitals tend to indicate a degree of catastrophising.

BlueBelle Wed 14-Aug-24 18:58:18

Margs you sound so happy to report against Asda why ?
What do you mean by ‘have some basic standards’ are you inferring that those that shop at Asda are somehow inferior What a cheek

OnwardandUpward Wed 14-Aug-24 19:26:13

Maybe a disgruntled ex employee? [hmmm]

My local Asda is fine. Happy with it. Also happy with all the other local shops.

MissChateline Wed 14-Aug-24 19:49:36

Give me Booths any day !

I miss my Clitheroe Booths so much, we do have one near our holiday let in Ripon, I always travel home with a cool bag full.

Regarding Asda, the main thing is that the brothers ( who have now fallen out) don’t rape the pension fund.

I've stopped shopping on line with Asda because so many items are not in stock and the replacements aren't what I want.. So now I use Ocado who always have what I ordered.. probably a bit more expensive.. and my local Aldi for stuff I can carry

ASDA nearest us is not very clean or well stocked. A mess.

Large Asda where I live is OK, but my go to store is the very large Sainburys. I find they have a better choice, and I prefer the produce.

Our Asda at Cribbs Causeway was Carrefour when it opened about 40 years ago. Those were the days. I believe it was the largest supermarket in the country (still is I assume). Carrefour was absolute heaven. I still remember the huge circular cheese counter with staff that knew all about the produce and how to serve it. Likewise the incredible fish counter laden with oysters and lobsters. Shopping there was like taking a trip to the continent. The in house restaurant was amazing too with professional chefs and carafs of wine served with your meal.

We bought some badminton racquets there back in the day.

Similar here flappergirt Chandlers Ford, Carrefour felt exotic!

I save my big shop until I’ve been to see the DDs - they both live near an Asda just outside Newcastle - all fine there - otherwise just my local Tesco.

OnwardandUpward Wed 14-Aug-24 22:23:18

Oh I remember Carrefour, in particular their own brand cat food, which stank to high heaven! grin

pascal30 Thu 15-Aug-24 10:40:52

I always visited Carrefour before getting on the ferry with my car back to Calais.. The choice was fabulous.. I'd fill the boot..

NotSpaghetti Thu 15-Aug-24 11:07:32

Our ASDA went steadily downmarket and stocks less and less of the things we buy.
Sadly.

It's very close but I rarely use it if I don't need the Post Office which is situated thete.
