Goodbye ASDA?

It's getting a really bad press in the media Business columns - has such a long established retailer had it's day?

The branch nearest to me was pretty well OK when it was under the Wallmart banner. Then the Issa Brothers came along and the nosedive began, on all levels.

Shabby, gaps on the shelves, harrassed looking staff and I'd swear that the stock in the household and soft furnishings dept. has been chucked at the shelves.

But we do have a lovely Aldi just half a mile up the road.....

Our Asda is also a mess. I only go in if I need essentials. It has definitely gone downhill here.

Our ASDA frequently has poorly stocked shelves, staff trolleys left out blocking aisles, fewer manned tills. It needs an overhaul.

I was in there lat night and it was awful.

I have not been in a physical supermarket for more than 10 years.

Ours is a mess as well. It makes me feel tired before I’ve even started shopping.

I only go there because it has a larger gluten free section than nearby Tesco’s and Morrison’s but everything looks like it’s been thrown at the shelves.

I do most of my shopping in Aldi

Our local filling station used to have convenience store run by Co-Op but Asda recently took over. It was not as well stocked from the outset and now it seems even worse every time I visit. As I mostly shop online, I am not too bothered.

I have had bad experiences the two times I ordered from Asda online. One, quite large, order had mainly items with short use by dates, some were that day.

Another time I had an evening delivery and they phoned to say the van had broken down so delivery would be between
10.30pm and 11.30pm. I waited up until midnight but nobody came. The next day I saw that I had been charged for the delivery and I had to waste a great deal of time, energy and emotion before they admitted that the delivery hadn't taken place and finally issued a refund. No apology let alone any sort of goodwill gesture was forthcoming.

We must be lucky then, as our nearest Asda is clean and well stocked including freshly made sushi.
It has a good clothing dept too. There are serviced tills for those who like them, Scan and Go or DIY tills for those who like them.

Don’t get the idea that everything is perfect though. They’ve changed the topping on their Tiger bread and you can no longer choose a small Tiger loaf and get it sliced for you.

I used to work at asda as a part time cashier when I retired from teaching when it was a Wallmart store and it was a very happy place. The pay was poor but they were wonderful to me when Mum died.
Then the Issas took over and our employment contracts were changed, fewer holidays, fewer perks, the whole atmosphere changed overnight somehow.
I was 77 and decided I'd had enough so I left, along with most of the other golden oldies. The rest of the staff became militant and joined unions and worked to rule and who could blame them?
I no longer shop there even though I have a long service staff discount, its scruffy, its miserable, its dirty, even the trolleys are super-wonky.
Its a crying shame.

I normally do an online Asda shop and usually reliable. Items from large Asda in town. My smaller local Asda seems to have gone downhill recently, items not in stock, messy etc. There is an Aldi near as well, but I think they are getting more expensive and some of their products have more of tendency to UPF than Asda equivalent.

We used to shop regularly at our local Asda, but felt it had gone downhill considerably. Last time we were in, there were lots of gaps on the shelves and the whole shop just looked a bit rundown. There's a massive Asda superstore a bit further away, and as we were in the area for something else, we popped in there, and it was much better.

I think OP is panicking somewhat..
Morrisons also got a bad press recently and Waitrose hasn’t been doing so well. Some branches are clearly thriving.
Let’s not bury them until they are dead.

If our local Fb groups are anything to go by, I'm surprised the whole area isn't littered with broken down Asda delivery vans.

I gave up with them many years ago after they failed to deliver twice, allegedly because the van had broken down. Both times. Seems they're still using the same excuse around here.

kittylester Wed 14-Aug-24 13:08:05

Haven't the brothers who own it fallen out?

jusnoneed Wed 14-Aug-24 13:14:03

Our nearest one looked very grubby the last time we went in, some broken flooring too. It all looked as if it needed a really good clean.

fancythat Wed 14-Aug-24 13:15:22

Just to give a bit of balance, the nearest one to me was fine, last time I was in there.

Every year we get one of these stories, whether it’s about Asda, Tesco, Morrisons or whichever supermarket, because one chain’s growth is another’s loss. I expect Asda will sort themselves out, (fabulous Christmas range, or whatever), and next year it will be another chain’s turn in the spotlight.

I've just gone back to asda for online shopping, as I've found Iceland pretty dire of late.

Ideally I'd like to physically shop at lidl.

Babs03 Wed 14-Aug-24 13:49:18

Our ASDA has gone down the tubes too.
No real variety, empty shelves, untidy shambolic look to it, went there to buy stuff for a party catering to veggies and one gluten free guest. Usually ASDA would have the stuff I need but had to leave empty handed and go to Sainsburys which had everything I needed and more.
Usually shop at Lidl/Aldi, both much better than ASDA for ordinary produce.

No. I. AM. NOT. PANICKING.

And I'll think you will find that ASDA has already buried itself.

Have some basic standards, at least.

i used to shop online with asda, due to being disabled it was easier, i got fed up with so many things missing/out of stock from my order that i gave up, the last straw was a £62 order and an email telling me i was getting £29 of my order, no bread, milk or toilet roll, these are just basic items, i wrote to them to complain and they sent me a voucher, i wrote no thanks on the voucher and sent it back.

MissAdventure Wed 14-Aug-24 14:07:14

I've only just changed back, after exactly the same sort of issues, and touch wood, I've found them better, so far.

BlueBelle Wed 14-Aug-24 14:07:24

My Asda is clean and very well used I use it most weeks Aldi if I can get to but its further away but Asda's fine here,no problem at all

BlueBelle Wed 14-Aug-24 14:08:14

Margs I don’t agree our Asda is fine
