Hair quandary

I have my hair coloured. Just highlights and lowlights and any white hair left alone. Yesterday I sat as usual through an hour + of the junior painstakingly painting strands and tying them up in foils. It seemed to take forever. She wasn't a great conversationalist and had plainly had a very spicy lunch. I hated it all. Afterwards the stylist gave my hair her excellent cut and blow dry.
My quandary is- should I just stop the colouring altogether? I hardly notice the difference by DH says the colours are more noticeable at the back. I could just have cut and blow dries as required and not bother with the palaver of it all.
What do people think. I'm not very vain and my hair is immersed three times a week at Aquafit.

I used to have highlights but as the grey took over I had a full colour at the hairdressers and have the roots touched up every 7 weeks or so. In my late sixties I am not ready to embrace grey hair! Yes definitely wear blusher too otherwise I look pale.

I have always hated hairdresser. All that proofing, and spraying. My hair was very dark. I used henna when it began rot grey but soon gave that up. Now my hair is white. Clean, shiny white, with a good cut.

Go with the grey! At least give it a try - you can always go back to the bottle if you’re not happy.

Georgesgran Thu 29-Aug-24 16:24:30

Bit more face than I planned - but I use a purple mousse on my grey.

I would happily have left mine alone if it had gone pure white or even silver, but it was a horrible salt and pepper grey which really did nothing for me whatsoever. I see women with beautiful white or silver hair and think it looks so beautiful. I would definitely embrace mine if it would only go like that.

Same here. I’m brunette naturally with a tiny hint of red, when I started to go grey I coloured it myself, then couldn’t be bothered and let it all grow out and go grey, it looked absolutely awful, it was a dreadful dull grey and I looked unwell!

Off to the hairdressers and have never looked back, due for a colour tomorrow.

My hair is pure white now, and I have never coloured it. I had real copper colour hair but it started to go white at the sides quite early on, and is very fine. The cost and effort and hassle of colouring it was a no go to me. If hair is coloured well it can look very nice but it soon starts to show the grey or white underneath, plus the thought of spending so much money on it meant that it was a definite no no for me. I try to save up money to do things or go out , and my hair is way down the list of important things to do, but most of all the time spent doing it would cancel it out in any case. So I would say let it change to whatever it will be, perhaps try out some different makeup, and give yourself both money and time which y ou can enjoy more.

I have let nature determine my hair colour as the rate it grows I would live at the hairdressers. I haven't had it cut for four months and its past my shoulders and think its making me look a bit witchy unless its tied back.

Constant highlights made my hair thin and dry and very porous. I havnt had it coloured for years and its in much better condition now.
Strangely I was looking at a box of semi permanent dye that I found at the back of my cabinet, and am wondering…..should I give it another go.
My hair is a mix of white/ light grey/ blond, it’s certainly in better condition and shinier than before but still thin.

Why not give it a try? You always colour it again if you don't like it. Just get a really good cut.

It's worth noting that when you go grey you might need to reconsider your makeup and clothes colours as grey can be draining around the face. You might find you prefer a different cut with the different colour too.

I just washed my hair today (the day after all the palaver) and it feels very strange. Sort of rough. I suppose the chemicals used aren't very good for hair.

Patsy70 Thu 29-Aug-24 18:30:43

Good idea to just live with your natural hair colour for a while Aveline. If you change your mind and decide to go back to the hairdressers, I would definitely not have the junior colouring your hair - sounds pretty unpleasant! Georgesgran - your hair colour looks lovely.

I think my user name is a strong indication of my feelings, vim really not ready to embrace the grey but I do hate the process. My hairdresser is lovely but I dread going. It's expensive, itchy and takes far too long but I'm not ready to embrace the grey. However, if you think you are then go for it. Hair is one of the easiest things to change and you're never too old to experiment with a different look. Surprise yourself .

Thanks Patsy70. X

Loving the hair colour, I also use a purple treatment for my grey, brings out the silver
highlights and softens the greys.

I started to go grey very young and did dye it, but in later years - long ago now - I decided to go grey and it is a relief not to bother with dye. Also, I am old! Grey hair happens and I am ok with that.

At 83 years of age I've never had my hair coloured, it's exactly like my Ma's looked and I like it, of course, it saves me a fortune. I prefer to put petrol in my car.

SillyNanny321 Fri 30-Aug-24 12:13:56

Had to give up colouring my hair several years ago when my hairdresser said if I kept colouring along with the meds I have to take I would lose all my hair! Very scary so stopped colouring as my hair had become very thin & still is! Put up with the grey hair as it is so much better than being bald! Not happy but do still have some hair even if it is so thin now. Need the meds to keep going so cant change that. Sad life isnt it when you get old, getting old does beat the alternative though😂

VerbenaGirl Fri 30-Aug-24 12:13:57

I'd absolutely roll with the natural colour.

rocketship Fri 30-Aug-24 12:18:31

Only my hairdresser knows how much grey hair I have.... and I'm going to keep it that way~~ LOLOL

Daffydilly Fri 30-Aug-24 12:40:54

Do it! I gave up the highlights a couple of years ago in my late 50s.

I was told by my incredibly trendy grand daughter last week that my hair looks amazing and that young people are paying to have hair like mine.

I wear it just past my shoulders and I'm very lucky in that the grey is a nice grey and blends in well with my previous blonde shades.

I've never regretted it.

Patsytaylor Fri 30-Aug-24 12:44:08

I do it at home. Nice n easy hair colourant.

The last time I went to the hairdressers was when I was 13 in 1956, my mum was fed up of me looking like I had been dragged through a hedge backwards as my hair was very thick and wild. She made me have a perm, the old type with the metal stand and metal wires coming out of it, it looked like a massive stainless steel octopus, I hated the perm and brushed it out when I got home but all I was left with was a frizzy bush. My mum kept using my dad's Brylcream to try and make it look smooth. Since that day I have never set foot in a hairdressers, I cut my own hair and dye it myself, put it in rollers until dry and then tong it. I make a darned good job of it too.

I reduced my half head highlights to every other salon visit after the salon I used to go to with a fantastic hairdresser closed down. At present the highlights make very little difference and don't even last more than half a dozen washes. Thinking to stop them altogether especially as I think I get a better, longer lasting finish from using a silver shampoo and leaving it on my hair for 10 mins before rinsing off.

Purplepixie Fri 30-Aug-24 13:07:25

Give it a go and what do you have to lose? You might like it better. I have a lovely male hairdresser who I have gone to for over 10 years but I have had rubbish ones in the past with the social skills of a dead fish. It used to make me uncomfortable in the past and I refuse to be made to feel like that. You could always try another hairdresser.

Aveline Fri 30-Aug-24 13:08:31

Looking at my hair today in good sunlight I don't actually like the highlights much. They look rather yellow than blonde. I'm going to leave it to grow out but keep up the cuts and blow dries. I'll check out those shampoos several of you have mentioned. Thanks all.
