Hair quandary

I have my hair coloured. Just highlights and lowlights and any white hair left alone. Yesterday I sat as usual through an hour + of the junior painstakingly painting strands and tying them up in foils. It seemed to take forever. She wasn't a great conversationalist and had plainly had a very spicy lunch. I hated it all. Afterwards the stylist gave my hair her excellent cut and blow dry.
My quandary is- should I just stop the colouring altogether? I hardly notice the difference by DH says the colours are more noticeable at the back. I could just have cut and blow dries as required and not bother with the palaver of it all.
What do people think. I'm not very vain and my hair is immersed three times a week at Aquafit.

Thanks Patsy70. X

I think my user name is a strong indication of my feelings, vim really not ready to embrace the grey but I do hate the process. My hairdresser is lovely but I dread going. It's expensive, itchy and takes far too long but I'm not ready to embrace the grey. However, if you think you are then go for it. Hair is one of the easiest things to change and you're never too old to experiment with a different look. Surprise yourself .

Good idea to just live with your natural hair colour for a while Aveline. If you change your mind and decide to go back to the hairdressers, I would definitely not have the junior colouring your hair - sounds pretty unpleasant! Georgesgran - your hair colour looks lovely.

I just washed my hair today (the day after all the palaver) and it feels very strange. Sort of rough. I suppose the chemicals used aren't very good for hair.

Why not give it a try? You always colour it again if you don't like it. Just get a really good cut.

It's worth noting that when you go grey you might need to reconsider your makeup and clothes colours as grey can be draining around the face. You might find you prefer a different cut with the different colour too.

Constant highlights made my hair thin and dry and very porous. I havnt had it coloured for years and its in much better condition now.
Strangely I was looking at a box of semi permanent dye that I found at the back of my cabinet, and am wondering…..should I give it another go.
My hair is a mix of white/ light grey/ blond, it’s certainly in better condition and shinier than before but still thin.

I have let nature determine my hair colour as the rate it grows I would live at the hairdressers. I haven't had it cut for four months and its past my shoulders and think its making me look a bit witchy unless its tied back.

My hair is pure white now, and I have never coloured it. I had real copper colour hair but it started to go white at the sides quite early on, and is very fine. The cost and effort and hassle of colouring it was a no go to me. If hair is coloured well it can look very nice but it soon starts to show the grey or white underneath, plus the thought of spending so much money on it meant that it was a definite no no for me. I try to save up money to do things or go out , and my hair is way down the list of important things to do, but most of all the time spent doing it would cancel it out in any case. So I would say let it change to whatever it will be, perhaps try out some different makeup, and give yourself both money and time which y ou can enjoy more.

I would happily have left mine alone if it had gone pure white or even silver, but it was a horrible salt and pepper grey which really did nothing for me whatsoever. I see women with beautiful white or silver hair and think it looks so beautiful. I would definitely embrace mine if it would only go like that.

Same here. I’m brunette naturally with a tiny hint of red, when I started to go grey I coloured it myself, then couldn’t be bothered and let it all grow out and go grey, it looked absolutely awful, it was a dreadful dull grey and I looked unwell!

Off to the hairdressers and have never looked back, due for a colour tomorrow.

Georgesgran Thu 29-Aug-24 16:24:30

Bit more face than I planned - but I use a purple mousse on my grey.

Georgesgran Thu 29-Aug-24 16:23:41

Go with the grey! At least give it a try - you can always go back to the bottle if you’re not happy.

I have always hated hairdresser. All that proofing, and spraying. My hair was very dark. I used henna when it began rot grey but soon gave that up. Now my hair is white. Clean, shiny white, with a good cut.

GrannyIvy Thu 29-Aug-24 14:42:58

I used to have highlights but as the grey took over I had a full colour at the hairdressers and have the roots touched up every 7 weeks or so. In my late sixties I am not ready to embrace grey hair! Yes definitely wear blusher too otherwise I look pale.

Allira Thu 29-Aug-24 13:23:15

My brown hair is hardly grey yet but I'd like to have lowlights just to brighten it up a bit. However, I don't think I could stand all the palaver these days.
I'd quite like to go silver, my brother did but he was always blond anyway.

Yes, I always use blusher as I look 'drained' otherwise even without the grey hair.

ginny Thu 29-Aug-24 13:20:16

I stopped having my hair coloured a good few years ago, I’m 70 now. When the mood takes me I use a wash in wash out colour shampoo and ring the changes. At the moment it is a very subtle pink.
My MIL coloured her hair until covid when she was 88. We persuaded her to try having her natural colour and everyone said she looked 10 years younger.

mayisay Thu 29-Aug-24 13:17:07

For those of you who would like to let their hair go naturally grey, but find that it may be a bit draining, may I suggest using blusher to add a bit of colour to your face. It will make all the difference, and it certainly works for me.

Aveline

I'm pretty sure I'll be salt and pepper grey. It's already pretty white at the front anyway. I gave up on make up too. Very occasional attempt on special occasions but I look like a monkey had go at it! Just have to rely on my wonderful personality I suppose grin

I use Provoke Touch of Silver shampoo and conditioner for grey hair, is purple but helps bring out the silver highlights in your hair.
It works for me x

I also tried during lockdown to grow out my grey. All well to start with but fairly soon the salt and dark pepper arrived and it was ghastly. I'd been a box blonde for years and the grey was completely awful for my complexion and aged me badly. Blonde again and I feel like me. I colour it at home, only takes half an hour, every couple of months or so. My hairdresser always compliments me on the colour and condition of my hair.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 29-Aug-24 12:56:47

Get the best cut and blow dry regulaŕly. Treat yourself to the best shampoo and conditioner. And go with it. Maybe get some makeup advice ... new colours to suit the grey.

SpanielCuddler Thu 29-Aug-24 12:45:43

Good for you Aveline. I’m still natural blonde in my 60s! Never coloured but people assume I do anyway.

I have some grey now but to be honest they look like highlights! It’s OK but the texture of the greys can be dry and course.

I don’t wash my hair as often since retiring. I use a variety of leave in conditioners or oils.
Some young people pay to have grey hair don’t they?

Overthemoongran Thu 29-Aug-24 12:39:35

My very thick hair goes a horrible shade of slate grey, not the lovely silver or white I see on others my age. I don’t have the patience to sit for hours in a hairdressers so I do it myself at home. I need to touch up the roots every couple of months ( 10 mins) and then do a full colour every 6-8 months. I always get compliments so I shall continue while I can.

Aveline Thu 29-Aug-24 12:31:21

Thanks all. Think I'll go ahead. Go grey or go bust! (Or something grin)

Tuaim Thu 29-Aug-24 12:26:40

Give it a try. What do you have to lose and you may be pleasantly surprised?!

Babs03 Thu 29-Aug-24 12:09:42

I stopped colouring my hair several years ago, it wasn’t a conscious decision, my hair was v dry and so thought I would give it a rest. As the grey came through people complimented me on it thinking I had used a grey hair dye so I haven’t coloured it since.
My hair is in much better condition and doesn’t make me look ancient, after all grey is just another colour.
