What to wear ...........

We're in the south east and it's been almost chilly here today. It's made me look through my wardrobe. I need to buy some new bits and pieces for winter but just don't know what my style is any more. I'm nearly eighty, have quite a rural life, have clothes for more dressy occasions when needed, ie skirts and dresses but most of my day to day outfits are leggings and tops. As we get into winter I'll also wear M&S thermals as layers too. Had a look in M&S and Next today. All the warmish tops (sweat shirty things etc) are so unfeminine somehow, the shoulders droop down almost to the elbows, the slim fit tops would possibly need something over the top as the weather cools.

I've really just lost all sense of what would look good but also slightly fashionable. I did see some "comfort" jeggings in M&S and they really look comfortable but am I too old or does age not matter? I'm a size 14 bottom and possibly 12/14 top.

Can anyone give me some ideas of where to look for clothes that fit but are comfortable and look reasonable. I really have lost the plot!

That’s lovely!

What about snoods? I have quite a few in different colours and they are great for keeping your neck warm (and hidden!). Some of them have come from the company Kettlewell.

I wear snoods often, dog walking can get chilly.

I wear scarves often as well, again warmth. I thread through the loop inside jacket collar - no problems losing or wrapping wrong.

Thank you. I forgot Kentwell, ordered a pretty moonlight print.

NotSpaghetti exactly, thank you. I have a lovely Welsh wool shawl, which I wear a lot but it is not a scarfe! Also agree with you about colour. I’m not a very colourful person. Dark green, and navy are my default colours

JamesandJon33 I think it depends on the scarf and how it's worn.

My mother-in-law wears thinner fluttery or sometimes silky scarves and I know what you mean.
I sometimes put a scarf on and look at myself and feel "no - old lady look".

I do have some "odd: scarves - big shawl types - that are good in the winter and a few (hand woven) that work with some specific tops so I do wear those.

My big thing though is colour "old lady colours" - those particular blue/pink/lilac etc shades that seem to be on too many of us... You know them when you see them!

Totally agree foxie48 everyone should wear what they want to wear and feel comfortable in. With or without velcro 😆

What would you like me to wear? Something with a Velcro fastening no doubt .

Wear what you enjoy wearing and feel good in. fwiw lots of older people with arthritic hands find velcro very useful as a fastener. I'm a huge fan of comfortable footwear, love Birkenstocks, don't love DMs as they make my legs look skinny but my slightly younger friend looks great in them. Nothing is out of bounds as we get older and I still find clothes make me happy!

Each to his own foxie48 . I am very nearly 80. I have a neighbour who always wears, andI mean always, matching top, trousers and a scarf. ‘To bring it together’ she says. As do you. I am determined not to do the same. I wear a lot of Toast clothes and chunky shoes. DMs , Birkenstocks etc. But no scarves

Sorry but that did make me laugh 😆😆

Scarfs scream 'old lady trying to be trendy'. But DMs don't ??

(Not a criticism of wearing DMs, by the way.)

I think a nice scarf can complete an outfit, depending what the outfit is. I certainly don’t think a scarf screams “oldish lady trying to be trendy” 😂😂
A good thing we all don’t think the same about clothes.

V3ra Tue 03-Sept-24 16:19:32

I used to always wear a necklace but when I looked after babies and very young children regularly I used to wear a lightweight scarf instead, after I had a favourite necklace grabbed and broken one day.
More recently I prefer to just wear earrings but not necklaces for every day, unless I am "going out."

JamesandJon33 Tue 03-Sept-24 14:57:19

Yes wear what you like ladies. I just don’t like to be predictable. And scarves are !!

Mostly some excellent ideas. But please no scarves. They scream oldish lady trying to be trendy.

I love to wear a scarf with a plain jumper, it helps to put an outfit "together" this is one of my favourites, lovely cashmere jumper worn with jeans or a pair of smart black trousers, lipstick, a smile and I'm ready to go. I'm nearly 76 so I'm old and have absolutely no desire to be trendy. A scarf is also great for keeping the chills at bay and hiding a scrawny neck, I suffer with both in cold weather. I stick a black leather biker jacket on top if it's really cold! I think we can wear what we want when we get old, nothing is out of bounds if it makes you feel good.

Exactly my sentiments, foxie. I have dozens of scarves in multiple colours, and they complete an outfit for me!

Nope I don't always wear a scarf but it was your comment "Please no scarves, they scream oldish lady trying to be trendy" that prompted my comment. tbh I thought it was a bit of a put down and I know lots of posters wear scarves as there have been threads about them.

Oh no! I am off to see a friend this morning. Thought I looked nice wearing my scarf but now I feel like an old woman. Thing is, it covers my wrinkly neck. smile

I have never mastered the art of wearing a scarf, they always slip, slide, dangle and fall off. I have narrow and sloping shoulders and anything on the shoulder that doesn't do up at the front slips off one or both shoulders, including scarfs, ccoats, cardigans, gilets etc etc.

My mum is 90 and looking very good in tunic tops from White Stuff and Sea Salt with leggings and cute ankle boots or trainers from Reiker. (With thermal tops underneath.) She also likes modern ‘tweedy’ skirts from M&S and Hobbs, with thick tights and sweaters. We both love charity shops and pick up lots of good stuff to refresh our wardrobes. I’m 70 - winter wear is boots, jeans and shirts with knitted tank tops or oversized sweaters. Do love a cashmere sweater - but sadly so do the moths!

Try Tu at Sainsburys
Very good quality and value

I love Seasalt Cornwall, very comfortable, easy combining older pieces with new ones, classic and trendy at the same time. I'm 66. I think Marks&Spencer sells it, but here is the link :

I like Seasalt and Edinburgh Woollen Mill. I don’t wear leggings but slim cotton trousers or cords and jeans. And do a lot of layering with open shirts, cardigans and a scarf for warmth. I also sometimes like Tu at Sainsbury’s.
