Best to ask the parents as they will know what he might need. You can get Duplo sets for toddlers now. DGS loved them. Toy garage with some toddler size cars, wooden jigsaws, tool set/medical set. Most things can be handed on nowadays. Both DD's get things on marketplace (FB) or Vinted or local groups selling sites. I am often sent to get them and get totally lost!

I've bought the wrong gifts before-my grandson doesn't like art so art materials are wasted on him .
The most successful present that I bought was an old garage toy with cars .
He loves it all these years later .
And the skirting boards bear witness to the cars as they whizz down the ramp .

We bought Happy Land for our first GC and all the others, boys and girls, have loved playing with it. There are various items and you can build up a collection. A house, shops, school etc and also a storage box which opens out into a street map to put everything on. You can also get cars and people. I think it might be available still from the Early Learning Centre. Please google and have a look.

Yes, Happyland is good too, similar to Fisher Price toys.

Ours had endless hours of fun and it stimulates imaginative play too, enacting scenarios with their Little People.

How about sending him a book, one every month. So much more use than yet another toy! Never too early to start reading.

Great idea. A gift every few weeks .

We usually go with a small gift, a two year old will have no idea about monetary value, and money put away for later years.

Something small and then open a bank account for him, we always bought a small item (usually a book) and then put money away, they have quite a tidy sum now that they are 18 and 20.

We haven’t told them yet so it will be a nice surprise, when they get the money after University. Other members of the family also put money into their accounts over the years. It is a Grandparents Account but in their names.

Fisher Price toys were always popular with my DC and DGC.
Yes, I know they're plastic but they are durable and get passed down.

Yes it's plastic, but very robust, with lots of different sets and you can add to it. It's the first thing my GS 18 months gets out when he come to ours. We were given a load it for the GD now almost five, and she still loves playing with it too.

That said, I would ask the parents first though.

I used to rack my brains and then realised hadn't got it right. its still a surprise for the child.

A good 80% of what my in-laws bought for my sons went straight to the charity shop because they either had it or it was of not interest to them. Of course they never knew this.

Tonie box is good but thinking that maybe the same or similar as 'music box that plays stories'. Balance bike or scooter? ( Different than a trike, but maybe too similar?) Or anything Paw Patrol or dinosaur related maybe? Or you can get chunky magnetic tiles for building? A small trampoline would be good or a wigwam.

Not cheap at nearly £80 - though a 10% discount is offered but have you thought of a toniebox ? They come in different colours .
I haven't bought one , but a neighbour has and finds that it entertains both sexes for hours .

I have 3 grandsons, the youngest will be 8 this month.

So, casting my mind back to when they were younger, I remember buying sets of books the brightly coloured Julia Donaldson books were popular. I also bought soft toys, I gave each of them a Build a Bear with some clothes. Part of the fun was to go to the Build a Bear shop and choose a cuddly toy, not necessarily a bear, and then choose some outfits.

The most popular big toy I ever bought was shop from Mulberry Bush complete with a working till and crates of wooden food. The shop converted into a glove puppet theatre with little curtains. I bought this for the eldest but they all enjoyed playing with it.

It may be an idea to look at Duplo but he could still be a bit young for this.

You could perhaps buy some add-ons for the train set.

You can get an easel with paper attached and chunky crayons, our two year old grandson loves this. Or the big Lego chunks that he can easily use. Also his imagination will be developing, we got our grandson a wooden early learning centre cooker with utensils/pans and bought some wooden fruit and veg for it.
