Autumn has come early this year

We are fortunate to live in a well tree-ed part of the country and over the last week we have seen so many trees that are already turning brown and yellow. Drivinbg around the countryside has a real Autumn tint.

I cannot remember when I remember seeing the trees change colour so early. In recent years the trees do not seem to even begin change colour until October.

Into winter nightdresses last night.

I also have not turned on my Central Heating. It is still warm in my house and outside even though it has been raining again with some windy days.

I was saying the same to our sons. This week was the first time that I didn't have to trim the hedging around my garden, it had just stopped growing, I usually have to trim it every three weeks until the end of October. Our lilac tree is also losing it's leaves. It is going to be a long, long winter.

Here in the south it’s been a sunless summer, days on end of cloud and gloom. I’m surprised to see leaves turning already as the trees have had so little sun to store energy.
I’ve seen hardly any butterflies, house flies or wasps. No birds nesting in my big hedge, no hedgehogs, slow worms or toads.
The hedgerows are wildly overgrown with the wet winter and spring.
I wonder how long it will take the wildlife to recover from the wettest year I ever remember?

It is interesting reading the weather variations. We seem to have sat in a pocket in East Anglia of warm weather. We have had the odd chilly day but really very little rain since the beginning of August. Yesterday was 27 degrees in the afternoon. It was a warm muggy night. Looks like this week will be more autumnal 🍁🍂

It is interesting to read of various weather, we're warm and dusty. We're still using aircon, humidity makes it muggy at night - difficult to sleep.

I wonder who will be first to turn the CH on. Our CH is controlled by the thermostat, no off/on switch, which is set at 18.5 degrees, and never touched. So far the internal temperature is still in the 20s, although sometimes as low as 15-16 outside. I wait to see until the temperature sinks to 18 degrees indoors and the hetaing automatically comes on.

I wore a jumper two days ago and then shorts and tee yesterday.

I noticed the leaves falling a couple days ago and some signs of yellowing on plants in the garden. Time to go and get some conkers then, that's usually an October task. I think the months have shifted about 4 weeks in advance of where they used to be weather wise. We get earlier signs of Spring too.
Nights have certainly drawn in quickly.

It's been wet here in Dorset the last few days but it's not cold, still have windows open and not needed to put the duvet back on the bed yet.

I get up in the night for a pee. It was still dark but when I came back to bed I noticed it was nearly six o clock- almost time to get up!

HelterSkelter1 Sat 07-Sept-24 07:13:05

Drizzle and gloom here in N Surrey. We have 2 large horsechestnuts in the garden and thr conkers are falling now which is very early. The leaves are shrivelled and yellow but that's because we have the leaf miner moth problem so not unusual. But the conkers are early.
I have bought and will buy more 100W LED bulbs to lighten indoors up. The eye drops I am using contract the pupils so everything is much darkeŕ anyway without this weather.

It is a leafy area where we live trees in abundance and woodland. It was 30 degrees here today I literally went mad washing and hanging out everything I could.
It has been so cold and damp here for months it has kicked my asthma off. The blackberries here I usually start picking are scarce because it’s been awful apart from the odd day. The trees have been shedding for weeks it’s autumn but we haven’t even had a summer.

Foggy as anything in the NE last night better weather today what’s going on?

henetha Fri 06-Sept-24 23:27:19

It's gone rather chilly in south Devon
And wet. I usually love September so I'm hoping it improves before dreaded winter sets in.

Took a hot water bottle to bed last, probably need to put the leccy blanket back on the bed 🙄

biglouis

Im in Manchester and the day has been very warm and sunny, Had to put the fan on in my bedroom for my afternoon nap.

Same here biglouis it’s been gorgeous today hasn’t it?

I read last week that the autumn leaves will have spectacular colours this year owing to the heavy rainfalls we’ve had. Every cloud and all that!

Casdon Fri 06-Sept-24 20:49:33

I don’t think that hot daytime temperatures mean that autumn isn’t early unfortunately. It’s been hot here in Wales this afternoon too, but all the signs of an early autumn are still around. Like flappergirl I’m praying for an Indian summer.

Trees not trespass (dah to me)

BlueBelle Fri 06-Sept-24 20:46:03

Still very warm here East coast I was out in a sleeveless top today and felt very warm (and I feel the cold) , so it must have been good . Very sunny very dry and still lovely and warm 23* trespass opp me still green funny how different it can be

keepingquiet Fri 06-Sept-24 20:38:43

Still summer here today! Not just warm- hot! Went walking in the local woods and picked lots of blackberries- it seemed very early to be picking them. No sign of leaf-fall or colour changes either. Sat by the water watching a heron... maybe the last day of summer, who knows but I hung two lots of washing out to dry!

M0nica Fri 06-Sept-24 20:34:34

It has already been announced that we have had the coldest summer since 2015. The dfference was slight, a fraction of a degree, but nevertheless, it has not been as warm.

I am selfishly saying, 'thank goodness we went on holiday last week'. We were on the Normandy coast and DH and DD, who was with us, love sea swimming and the weather was just right for spending every afternoon on the beach.

Siope Fri 06-Sept-24 20:31:25

I’m less than 30 miles north of you Monica and it was mid-20s today, and isn’t dropping below 17C tonight. We still have our windows and French doors wide open.

Greyduster Fri 06-Sept-24 20:27:11

Yesterday here in South Yorkshire it felt very autumnal - very cool (I put the heater on in the car!), misty, and in the woodland we were walking in the trees were turning colour and leaves were raining down. Same time last year my photographs show the trees were still in full green leaf. It was the end of October before leaves began to fall. Plants in my garden have gone over much earlier than usual too. Today it has been hot and sunny and promises to be the same tomorrow. It’s not going to last though.

It's definitely NOT been sunny in this part of Scotland - we've had an east coast haar lingering around these past couple of days. It's feeling very autumnal round here.
