Autumn has come early this year

We are fortunate to live in a well tree-ed part of the country and over the last week we have seen so many trees that are already turning brown and yellow. Drivinbg around the countryside has a real Autumn tint.

I cannot remember when I remember seeing the trees change colour so early. In recent years the trees do not seem to even begin change colour until October.

It really does feel Autumny now🍂🍁🍂I wore a jumper today for the first time.

Jaxjacky Fri 06-Sept-24 19:30:31

We live in South Hampshire, a year ago today it was 30, today 16, the incessant rain and wind means the leaves are fluttering down everywhere, it’s dull and cool,

I've been sitting in the garden today, 27 degrees! Tropical compared to the weather we've had recently.

Just a one day wonder though, according to the weather forecast.

I think you’re right Monica, the misty, cool mornings of autumn are here, the migrating birds are leaving early, and the leaves are turning. I was away last week, and when I got home there were cobwebs all over my house too, so the spiders are also looking for winter homes (not happy about that).

We have quite a few fallen oak leaves on our lawn.

Spent a happy day picking up the silver birch leaves that have fallen on to my pebble garden, just the hundred million or so left to go!

Rekarie You must live well to the north. I understand that parts of Scotland had their hottest day of the year.

Where I am the temperature has dropped below 20 degrees during the day for the first time for some months and the darkness caused by thick cloud cover and the rain have made it feel positively like November.

flappergirl Fri 06-Sept-24 20:06:00

I was sincerely hoping for an Indian summer and all the forecasts suggested that. However, autumn has arrived with a bump (not that summer was anything to write home about). It's cold, wet and miserable and the leaves are falling at a rate of knots. I hate it, it just means an even longer winter.

Very warm day here too but it has been autumnal for a week or so. We have had mists in the morning and it has been quite chilly early in the day.

Lucyd Fri 06-Sept-24 20:19:09

Gloriously sunny day in the south west of Scotland - possibly the best day of the entire summer! Another sunny day forecast for tomorrow. The sun is very welcome as we have had the wettest summer in years. Weirdly my magnolia tree is in full bloom again which is a bit odd in September.

MissInterpreted Fri 06-Sept-24 20:20:33

It's definitely NOT been sunny in this part of Scotland - we've had an east coast haar lingering around these past couple of days. It's feeling very autumnal round here.

Im in Manchester and the day has been very warm and sunny, Had to put the fan on in my bedroom for my afternoon nap.

Greyduster Fri 06-Sept-24 20:27:11

Yesterday here in South Yorkshire it felt very autumnal - very cool (I put the heater on in the car!), misty, and in the woodland we were walking in the trees were turning colour and leaves were raining down. Same time last year my photographs show the trees were still in full green leaf. It was the end of October before leaves began to fall. Plants in my garden have gone over much earlier than usual too. Today it has been hot and sunny and promises to be the same tomorrow. It’s not going to last though.

Siope Fri 06-Sept-24 20:31:25

I’m less than 30 miles north of you Monica and it was mid-20s today, and isn’t dropping below 17C tonight. We still have our windows and French doors wide open.

M0nica Fri 06-Sept-24 20:34:34

It has already been announced that we have had the coldest summer since 2015. The dfference was slight, a fraction of a degree, but nevertheless, it has not been as warm.

I am selfishly saying, 'thank goodness we went on holiday last week'. We were on the Normandy coast and DH and DD, who was with us, love sea swimming and the weather was just right for spending every afternoon on the beach.

keepingquiet Fri 06-Sept-24 20:38:43

Still summer here today! Not just warm- hot! Went walking in the local woods and picked lots of blackberries- it seemed very early to be picking them. No sign of leaf-fall or colour changes either. Sat by the water watching a heron... maybe the last day of summer, who knows but I hung two lots of washing out to dry!

BlueBelle Fri 06-Sept-24 20:46:03

Still very warm here East coast I was out in a sleeveless top today and felt very warm (and I feel the cold) , so it must have been good . Very sunny very dry and still lovely and warm 23* trespass opp me still green funny how different it can be

BlueBelle Fri 06-Sept-24 20:48:17

Trees not trespass (dah to me)

Casdon Fri 06-Sept-24 20:49:33

I don’t think that hot daytime temperatures mean that autumn isn’t early unfortunately. It’s been hot here in Wales this afternoon too, but all the signs of an early autumn are still around. Like flappergirl I’m praying for an Indian summer.

biglouis

Same here biglouis it’s been gorgeous today hasn’t it?

I read last week that the autumn leaves will have spectacular colours this year owing to the heavy rainfalls we’ve had. Every cloud and all that!

Mt61 Fri 06-Sept-24 21:55:58

Took a hot water bottle to bed last, probably need to put the leccy blanket back on the bed 🙄

henetha Fri 06-Sept-24 23:27:19

It's gone rather chilly in south Devon
And wet. I usually love September so I'm hoping it improves before dreaded winter sets in.

Harris27 Fri 06-Sept-24 23:30:10

Foggy as anything in the NE last night better weather today what’s going on?

Redhead56 Sat 07-Sept-24 00:19:07

It is a leafy area where we live trees in abundance and woodland. It was 30 degrees here today I literally went mad washing and hanging out everything I could.
It has been so cold and damp here for months it has kicked my asthma off. The blackberries here I usually start picking are scarce because it’s been awful apart from the odd day. The trees have been shedding for weeks it’s autumn but we haven’t even had a summer.
