Autumn has come early this year

We are fortunate to live in a well tree-ed part of the country and over the last week we have seen so many trees that are already turning brown and yellow. Drivinbg around the countryside has a real Autumn tint.

I cannot remember when I remember seeing the trees change colour so early. In recent years the trees do not seem to even begin change colour until October.

Our heating came on a couple of mornings a fortnight ago, but not since.

The next big step is, of course, when the weather gets cold enough to start digging out the winter wardrobe and packing away the summer clothes.

I have already done the pre-winter review and have bought a pair of cord trousers and a couple of sweaters to replace those that bit the dust at the end of last winter, but as yet it hasn't been cold enough for me to consider wearing them.

Was holding out till Monday to put the heating on but son complained of the cold tonight so on it is!

Welcome to Autumn folks- get those jumpers out!

Still very much Indian summer here today. Very warm! I think it’s all change tomorrow, though.

Summer is about to slip away, we'll roll the air cons into storage. Windows open to breeze (after I wash the inside glass).

My daughter posted a picture of a ripe blackberry way back in mid-July. She said we had gone straight from spring to autumn without any summer.

Just back from a stay on the East Coast. Weather glorious, I think it was more the end of summer than the beginning of Autumn!
The equinox is on Sunday though, so time to start prepping for winter!
Don't feel nearly so bad about it as I did a few weeks ago.

Just driven the whole of S Wales. Newport to Tenby. Cold, damp and grey. But the trees are still green, though looking rather tired

I have been on the North Devon coast for the last few days where the wind was unrelenting. I am glad to be home.

Well I've been on the Dorset coast for the past few days doing shoreline walks, fabulously warm, for which I'm grateful. Lovely weather next week is predicted too, by which time we'll be home, but will still make the most of it.

We have the prediction of an Indian Summer next week so we will need to make the most of it, the autumn storms will come soon enough.

Turned the electric blanket on last night. First time this Autumn.

Witzend Fri 13-Sept-24 19:53:40

Apparently it’s going to warm up a bit next week! 👍

Slept in my “Oodie” last night 🥶🥶🥶

I also had to put on my slipper boots and long hooded chenile dressing gown this morning. The sun was shining but there was a lot of dew on the window ledges and wheelie bins.

Casdon Fri 13-Sept-24 18:48:06

It had the top leaves of my pumpkin, but the dahlias have survived thankfully, I’d like a few more weeks of flowers yet so I’m keeping my fingers crossed - it’s definitely not so cold today.

David49 Fri 13-Sept-24 18:43:52

Ground frost this morning here out in the sticks begonias look decidedly sick, others look OK.

South West Wales and it is sunny here but very cold. Jumper and socks this morning as we were out early. But no heating on yet .

keepingquiet Fri 13-Sept-24 10:10:26

Autumn may be here but although I wore a jumper for the first time the other day the cold snap isn't going to last.
No heating on here yet- but it the equinox is this Sunday so I may put my slippers on!

This morning the central heating has come on and has stayed on. At 6.00am it was 3 degrees outside and just under 18 degrees inside.

I am sitting at my desk in a winter nightdress and a thick warm fluffy dressing gown over it. But the sun is shining on the yellowing leaves of the trees that surround us, so gardening is beckoning to me today.

Casdon Thu 12-Sept-24 16:35:32

The forecast for mid Wales is 0 tonight. I hope that doesn’t happen as it will finish off the late summer flowers.

Jaxjacky Thu 12-Sept-24 16:31:57

Put our heating on earlier, we’ve been away for a few days and the house was cold, I was walking through scrunchy leaves yesterday,

M0nica Thu 12-Sept-24 15:28:31

The central heating came on automatically this morning. Not much and not for long, but it meant the internal temperature of the house had fallen below 18 degrees.

Summerfly

Yes Babs03, I bought one earlier in the year. It was a Godsend when I was poorly. Much better than my hot water bottle. It’s cheap to run too. We’ve had a rotten summer up here in the far northwest. So much more rain than usual and hardly any warm spells. The garden has been a complete washout.

I must invest in one of those, Lakeland had sold out last year, will have a look tomorrow 😊

We are fortunate enough to have spent last couple of months on West Coast of France. There was two or three weeks in July that were lovely and warm, hot even on some days, but mostly overcast and cool for the time of year. August has been iffy and September cold and wet! Home tomorrow to I guess more of the same!
