Magnesium supplements

Hi. Does anyone take these and find them useful ? I’ve been looking into supplements to help with my sleep and anxiety.
It seems these could help with these things along with cramp, and heart palpitations. It seems it’s difficult to get enough through a good diet alone. We need 320g a day, a banana which is high in magnesium is only 30g.

Have a look on the website HealthUnlocked. It a very informative website.
I follow the AF side it's been invaluable. I know they have informed comments on types of Magnesium.
Worth a look.
Hope you get it sorted.

I’m a bit cross to say the least. After taking Vitabiotics magnesium tablets for the past year I contacted them to find out which type it is as the box does not tell you. They’ve just responded to say it’s magnesium hydroxide which is primarily used to treat constipation which I definitely don’t suffer from. Patient website said you shouldn’t take it for more than 3 days at a time. It seems what I need is magnesium taurate. I’ve looked at a list of different magnesium types - there are so many and heaven help you if you want one fors say, fibromyalgia and another for stomach problems. Would you take both? I want one for irregular heart rate as I can’t take beta blockers as they make me feel ill.

glammagran We’ll keep our fingers crossed. Let me know how you get on.

Katyj I too bought it for heart palpitations and stress but will probably switch to another brand.

I've been taking magnesium supplements at night for the last year. The nighttime cramp I was suffering from was alleviated after about 2 weeks and I have not had it since. Result!

Katyj Thu 26-Sept-24 12:09:33

glammagran Those are the same ones I bought, but I specifically wanted the magnesium for anxiety and heart palpitations, so I’ve now bought magnesium glycinate from Superdrug, I’ll be starting those tonight.

I’ve been using Vitabiotics Ultra Magnesium but having just looked on Amazon nowhere on the product description does it tell me which type of magnesium it contains. Surely it should. I also take the same brand of Vitamin D but perhaps I should switch that too. A week of bad weather has made me very achy again disturbing my sleep.

I think it may be a good idea BlueBelle to have a vitamin D blood test arranged by your G.P. I was in the same situation as you, the cramps in my legs and feet were extremely painful. At first I was prescribed quinine tablets which helped but my G.P. was unable to prescribe more tablets. He suggested exercises which did not work. I eventually made an appointment with another G.P. who told me to go caffeine free for two weeks and sent me for a vitamin D blood test which came back as abnormal. Going caffeine free did not help but was worth a try. I have been told that I should take vitamin D tablets long term. I take Lercanidipine and Bisoprolol tablets every day for high blood pressure.

Magnesium gummies (2-200 mg) and Ashwaganda gummies 2. They are amazing together. Purchased from Amazon.

9. The best magnesium - Magnesium glycinate is the most absorbable type of magnesium. There are a lot of magnesium glycinate benefits. It’s gentle on the GI system, helps prevent muscle spasms, supports sleep and relaxation, and reduces stress. Magnesium glycinate may help relieve migraines and won’t interfere with other minerals.
Is this the one you take AreWeThereYet Or do they all do a similar job plus some added benefits depending on the individuals problems ?

AreWeThereYet

It depends what your deficiencies are. The ‘better one’ for one person is not necessarily the same as for another.

It definitely is different for everyone - no point taking something that's a laxative if you want to clear the brain fog 🤫

Quite grin.

I take a good quality magnessium from H and B for dreadful cramp down the sides of my legs and feet but they really aren’t doing any good at all and they aren’t cheap I still get the most awful cramp at the most inopportune times
Middle of a lunch out yesterday I had to get up from the table and try to do a stretch without looking too ridiculous

So I’ve been reading up about the benefits of magnesium it seems like you say AreWeThereYet magnesium glycinate is the better one. Also vitamin D3 and K2 together are the ones to go for too. I’m off shopping 🤣

These are the ones I take - to combat tiredness and muscle fatigue. They work with the B12 I get as quarterly injections.

AreWeThereYet. Thank you, that’s all very interesting, and well worth looking into before buying. It seems it’s difficult to get the correct amount even if eating a very good diet 🤔 Definitely worth a try.

Sorry this is quite a big post. I recently came across this breakdown of magnesium so thought it might be of interest to some.

Magnesium is vital for the following:
•Energy production
•Vitamin D function
•Vitamin K2 function
•Preventing kidney stones
•Heart health
•Blood pressure
•Preventing muscle cramps
•Preventing migraines
•Sleep

Magnesium supplements contain different forms of magnesium. Let’s take a look at them, starting with the worst.

1. The worst magnesium - Magnesium oxide is the worst yet most common magnesium supplement. It only has a 4% absorption rate. It’s also very expensive!

2. Magnesium sulfate has a 10% absorption rate and a high laxative effect. It may help relax your muscles superficially.

3. Magnesium orotate has a 15% absorption rate. This form of magnesium can penetrate the cell and increase energy. Magnesium orotate also works as an antioxidant and supports the DNA.

4. Magnesium taurate has a 20% absorption rate and supports heart health, blood pressure, and the nervous system.

5. Magnesium lactate has a 25% absorption rate and is more gentle on the GI system. It supports the cardiovascular system and can improve energy. Magnesium lactate is often used topically, which may be beneficial for your muscles.

6. Magnesium citrate has a 30% absorption rate. It can help prevent kidney stones and is good for cardiovascular issues and blood pressure. It can also help with detoxification.

7. Magnesium malate has a 40% absorption rate. It’s beneficial for chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

8. Magnesium threonate has a 75% absorption rate. It supports cognitive function and is a good form of magnesium for sleep.

Great for restless legs

Warmglovesandsocks Thu 19-Sept-24 09:51:37

Katyj. I take Magnesium (as Citrate) 300mg a day.
Kittylester. I take Curcumin (Turmeric) with the Magnesium.
Welbeck. You need B12 if you’re not eating much meat.

To those of you who are suffering with muscle cramps - I suffered from foot and leg cramps almost every day for two years, had a vitamin D blood test the result was abnormal. GP prescribed high strength vitamin D tablets. I only have to take 2 tablets per week for a period of 7 weeks eg 14 tablets in all then told to buy over the counter vitamin D tablets long term. Surprisingly after only two weeks my cramps have gone but I will still continue with vitamin D. Hope this information may be of help.

I bought Triple Magnesium Complex to help with sleep. I had to give it up after just a short time of taking it, as it made my face flush which was uncomfortable and inconvenient.
To make sure I stopped for a couple of weeks and tried again with the same result, so does not suit me.

Shazmo24 Wed 18-Sept-24 21:09:40

I have been taking Magnesium since January. It's best taken at night as does help with sleep. Just double check if there are any counter effects with any other medication you are taking. I can't take my thyroxine and magnesium together so that's why I take it at night

Katyj Wed 18-Sept-24 19:32:14

2oaktrees. Thank you for your post. I take Losartan never thought about the implications. I’ve had my palpitations investigated and think their ectopic beats.
It’s interesting to hear some people have been helped. Think I’d better ask the Dr first.

Applegran Wed 18-Sept-24 16:21:08

Thank you welbeck! I will investigate.
