Magnesium supplements

Hi. Does anyone take these and find them useful ? I’ve been looking into supplements to help with my sleep and anxiety.
It seems these could help with these things along with cramp, and heart palpitations. It seems it’s difficult to get enough through a good diet alone. We need 320g a day, a banana which is high in magnesium is only 30g.

Not tried magnesium but I am at the moment looking into the benefits of it.

Taken it for years, definitely helps with muscular aches and pains.

Have been taking these since June, I think they are helping

I take them for muscle aches and preventing cramp. Definitely works for me.

Oooh, I've just ordered some Tumeric for joints. Can I take both I wonder?

Iam64 Tue 17-Sept-24 09:03:31

I benefitted from muscle pain and cramps disappearing. Stopped taking them as they caused loose stools

I might give this a go, suffer from cramps, especially in my feet.

I use Magnesium Citrate gummies - they have a lovely taste and it cuts down on the number of things I have to swallow (you chew them). Amazon stock them.

I’ve been taking magnesium for 3 months. I’ve noticed I’m not as achy as usual but maybe it’s down to starting in the summer months. Winter will let me know if it lasts.

I was told I need to take Magnesium Glycinate, I find they help with restless legs but recently seemed to have stopped helping me sleep. So I have started taking breaks using them.
The Turmeric tablets have been brilliant, been taking them for about 3-4 months joint pain in my fingers has disappeared and knees much better. Would recommend them.

Yes, I do and have been taking a magnesium supplement regularly lately.

Magnesium is a muscle relaxant and eases cramp.
It also helps if you tend to get constipated.

I take Bioglan tablets.

I’ve started taking the same ones! The night-time leg cramps have definitely improved.

I take one about 90 minutes before bed time, I do think they have helped my sleep. I get the ones that dissolve in water, from SuperDrug.

PinkCosmos Tue 17-Sept-24 11:17:37

I started taking them a couple of years ago to help me sleep.

There are different types of magnesium but the glycinate is best for sleep

I also used to put Epsom salts in the bath as they are magnesium sulphate

I was doing this for a few months when I had to have a blood test - for something unrelated. When I got the results it said my magnesium levels were higher than normal!

I stopped taking them. However, I have recently been having leg aches and pains so may go back to the Epsom salts. Not sure what is best to take though, tablet wise.

Thank you ladies looks like they’ll be worth a try. I’m a bit worried about them upsetting my stomach though. In reading up about it, it seems there are different ones to try if they do cause problems, can’t remember the names now.

You can buy tea bags with Turmeric - Pukka do them. Or you can make your own turmeric tea.

Ingredients

3 heaped tsp ground turmeric
1 tbsp fresh grated ginger
1 small orange, zest pared
honey or agave and lemon slices, to serve

Method
STEP 1
Boil 500ml water in the kettle. Put the turmeric, ginger and orange zest in to a teapot or jug. Pour over the boiling water and allow to infuse for around 5 mins.

STEP 2
Strain through a sieve or tea strainer into two cups, add a slice of lemon and sweeten with honey or agave, if you like.

Beware if you’re on blood thinners you shouldn’t take Turmeric.

Hi, I took Magnesium supplements.. They really help with sleep, and Cramping at night..
Then I realised they were not good to take if your on medication. Such as Hiprex. I got a urine infection after 2 and half yrs of not having them. It can diluted the meds.. So look before you buy..

They're the ones I use too GG13

I had started to feel more tired than usual in the day, despite sleeping well. I now take magnesium tablets, one a day, which helps and I have more energy.
I stopped taking them for a while to see what would happen and became tired again, so for me they’re effective.

welbeck Tue 17-Sept-24 17:29:17

i found some in the house so took one, they are magnesium with vitamin B6.
i don't eat meat, so think i should take Vit B6 and ?B12.
anyone know?

Iam64 It's worth checking what kind of magnesium you were taking. Some types of magnesium are included in laxatives as they are often used for constipation (Magnesium oxide, Magnesium hydroxide (the liquid form of magnesium oxide), Magnesium sulfate (aka Epsom salts) and Magnesium citrate).

Magnesium malate and magnesium L-threonate are good options for supplements as they are both easily absorbed and don't have the same laxative affect.

Thanks arewethereyet. I’d researched carefully. I’m thinking I’ll take a lower dose because I did benefit with no cramps

Anyone remember Milk of Magnesia, kept in the medicine cabinet?
