A post this morning by Infoman, has prompted me to start this thread.
The first LP I purchased was, Simon and Garfunkel's Greatest Hits, my first single, The most Beautiful Girl in the World, by Charlie Rich.
Working over the summer as a student in the Knorr factory, enabled me to buy my first record player.
I'm getting all nostalgic! šŸ˜‰

'Richard Chamberlain Sings'
I played it again and again and again........
It's amazing that it's still in one piece after all this time!

Didn't know if I could find that one, in today's climate.

I loved Tracy by the Cufflinks and I think this was the first record I bought! I would have been 13 years old. I played it time and time again. I was a Cliff Richard fan and The Beatles. In my teens I was a Motown fan.

What a great selection of music!

My first single (it was two actually at the same time) was when I was 10 and had been given a record token for my birthday - enough to buy two singles. One was White Horses by Jackie, the other was Mozart 40 - Waldo de los Rios. Loved both. I became very popular at school when I brought the White Horses record into the drama lesson! We were all allowed to bring a record.

My first LP was "That'll be the Day" - double album, soundtrack from the film, aged about 14 I think.

My first 2 singles, Little Children and Downtown, bought when I was 9 and got my first record player.

Highlights from Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten.

La Fille Mal GardƩe ballet by Herold.

Or possibly Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony. I can’t quite remember now.

And Baggs Sibelius 5th. I am glad I was not the only nerdy child who liked classical music.
My first LP record was 'Night on a Bald Mountain' by Modest Mussorgsky. I went to see Disney 'Fantasia' in the cinema and loved the music.
My father liked classical music too and we had loads of 78s but mostly baroque stuff.

Why would we have to have been nerdy to like classical music?

I bought my fist singles when I was 11 and was given a record player for my birthday, combined with passing the 11 plus.

My parents had classical records.

I'm surprised that you two had sufficient funds to buy LPs.

Sorry to offend you Dinahmo it was my feeble attempt at being ironic. I bought the LP when I was 14 from my Saturday/Sunday job earnings. The LP cost 21/-.

Can’t quite remember if it was Crocodile Rock or Nutbush City Limits. I know they were both out in 73.
My first LP was by Mungo Jerry for the song In the summertime. In fact that may have been the title of the album.
I can also remember buying a load of those Top of the Pops albums that were out at that time.
I had loads of ā€œrecordsā€ already from when my cousin gave me her dansette player around five years earlier. These included
My Boy Lollipop
Puppet on a String
Tell Laura I Love Her
Wake Up Little Susie
There was so many more but I can’t remember them all.
This is bringing back so many fab memories. Thanks for posting this thread op.

The Beach Boys are the best band ever IMO.

Babs03 Sat 21-Sept-24 21:05:08

First LP was Mamas and Papas, my mum and dad bought it for me for Christmas, first LP I actually bought for myself would be Beachboys Greatest Hits, still have it, and have to say haven't heard a love song that outstrips 'God only knows what I'd be without you.'

mae13 Sat 21-Sept-24 20:52:05

It was "Bend Me Shape Me" by Amen Corner. They were quite favourites with the TeenyBoppers at the time and I was swooning over Andy Fairweather-Low for years!
He's bald as a coot, these days.

Saturday night at the movies by The Drifters. I can still remember taking it to my uncles to play it on his stereo because I couldn’t wait until I got home.

Love The Drifters and will add to your choice ā€˜There goes my first love’.
Wasn’t my first 45 but was one of them.

Oh, Marc..

One of my best memories was of when Tyrannosaurus Rex played at our small local Jazz Club in 1970, and Marc Bolan and Mickey Finn came over to the bar and chatted to me and my best friend for the whole of their interval, and bought us drinks. They were both incredibly good-looking, and I’m pleased to report that they were also absolute gentlemen, and so kind to us naive little 15 year olds. I think Marc probably chose to join us because he was wearing purple velvet dungarees and I was resplendent in my purple velvet hot pants!

My DH was taking pix of T Rex at Wembley Pool at the same time as Ringo was making a film of the band. We were immediately in front of the stage with some bouncers and railings behind us and the cinema ca,era track at our feet. The railings weren't fixed down and there weren't enough bouncers so the audience, mainly teenage girls were pushing forward. It was scary as I thought we would be trapped. MB was fanciable I thought.
