An artist has displayed a picture of a nude lady with her legs akimbo in her new gallery window
She has had a lot of complaints and visits from the police
Whatโ€™s your thoughts on this one? seems public opinion is divided

Many of us are trying to tell our granddaughters that they don't have to share photos of their bodies. I can just imagine a lad saying to his girlfriend "it's on display in the High Street, it's fine for you to do the same"

Absolutely ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

I cant see that, it's so unrealistic OTT almost silly not like the sort of realistic images that endanger teenagers.

Its reported in the Telegraph 6 hours ago it was taken down from the window.

Since 1988 , when the first Hay book festival began - it has changed from a being a sleepy market town to a place , which attracts broad minded arty people in droves .
Some of the inhabitants like the wealth that it generates and some are deeply resentful about escalating house prices .
So I'm not that surprised at the knee jerk reaction .
I don't think that it's great art ,but no more offensive than explicit art created by Frieda Kahlo and Jenny Saville .
Maybe this art would have had less rejection in Hebden Bridge .

Deedaa Fri 20-Sept-24 21:07:22

I wonder what the protesters would think of Egon Schiele? Admittedly, as Mary Beard says, he's a bit heavy on masturbation. Great drawings though.

Oreo Fri 20-Sept-24 21:35:45

Hebden Bridge? Is that some sort of cosmopolitan, arty, sophisticated town? More so than Hay-OnWye๐Ÿง
It was done to try and generate some interest in the artist, I use the word loosely, and her offerings.Maybe she should go into PR and put the pastels and oils away.

Hendon Bridge is an old mill town to the north of Manchester, quite picturesque with a canal running through. In the 1970's it was the place to go for cheap alternative living including young artists and gradually over the years turned into a trendy place to commute to Manchester from and to visit for art/cafes/walks. Also one of the locations for Happy Valley.

Wyllow3 Fri 20-Sept-24 21:45:55

Hebden Bridge not Hendon.

NotSpaghetti Fri 20-Sept-24 21:56:23

I love Hebden Bridge!

Buses. Flip! Should say nudes!๐Ÿ˜‚

I thought that what you meant to type was busts!

If a man had done that think of the reaction. She is sexually objectifying a woman and it us not a good painting anyway.. Don't give up the day job.

Very good points Allsorts.

She got noticed, itโ€™s a shame that itโ€™s not a very good painting, go out and get a proper job love.

Donโ€™t compare sharing photos with an abstract painting

Here's another article about it:

www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2024/sep/20/police-called-to-hay-on-wye-gallery-after-it-puts-painting-of-naked-woman-in-window

She is apparently a 3rd year at Central St. Martins so may have a lot of backing given the staff and alumni.
I expect she is just one of many there though!

Wyllow3 Sat 21-Sept-24 01:03:57

I think this picture is very derivative - and doesn't do what she thinks it does in her own words, not sure why she got a solo show - except I cant find any pix of her other work.

Esmay Sat 21-Sept-24 05:56:52

Deedaa -I forgot about Egon Schiele -his work was really explicit .
His work was deeply shocking in the thirties .
I wonder how it would have developed had he not died prematurely .

Oreo - I have relatives in Hay and Hebden Bridge and have lived in both places -so I've based my comments on my experiences .
They are both loved by me !

NotSpaghetti Sat 21-Sept-24 09:56:01

In a dream Egon Schiele, 1911. (In the Met collection)

For reference.

Esmay Sat 21-Sept-24 11:18:37

NotSpaghetti -I'm glad that you didn't post a certain artwork by Schiele -
I wonder what the response would have been !
I just looked on Etsy and there's plenty of stuff that would have been considered to be pornographic years ago .
Attitudes change with time .

Doodledog Sat 21-Sept-24 11:21:17

Hebden Bridge is known for its lesbian population. Iโ€™m not sure that that picture would necessarily be a hit with that demographic though grin.

Who knows?
A picture is emerging for this mysterious town๐Ÿ˜„

TheWeirdo Sat 21-Sept-24 11:28:10

I think the entire thing is absolutely hideous! I won't be commissioning her to do anything for me!

I could go to the local nursery and get 3 year olds to do a far better picture!

TheWeirdo Sat 21-Sept-24 11:29:13

UGH!

Purplepixie Sat 21-Sept-24 11:34:16

NO problem here. We are all made the same so why the fuss?

- I think if you commissioned 3 year olds to paint this, questions would be asked...
