Just heard this for the first time, and it's really tickled me.

That's all. Just wanted to say it.

Nutty slack ... I remember that saying, thought it was a Liverpool saying.

Mad as a cut snake
Running around like a blue arsed fly
Kangaroos loose in the top paddock
- weird person
A chop short on the barbecue-bit thick
If you had another brain it’d be lonely

Why are you taking a month of Sunday's to do that job? ..................... My Mother s way of saying I was too slow.

I'm watching Carry On Screaming, and it was said there.

How I missed it before, I don't know, considering how many times I've seen the film.

Oh I love that film. Odd Bod and Odd bod junior! Frying tonight…

Got a face like a smacked arse- for someone who didn't look very happy.

If I sat idle my mother used to say I was sat there like one o' clock half struck, haven't heard for about 60+ years.

‘Don’t just stand there gawping, you’ll catch flies.’
Was an oft repeated phrase my old mum would level at us if we didn’t get a move on.

Looking like a Tod on a Shovel was said frequently when I was young. I think it referred to something that looked small or odd!

If I was daydreaming around my mum used to say I was hanging about like patience on a monument ... no idea where that came from.

And I too remember nutty slack, we only had a coal fire (with a coal cupboard off the kitchen) - no other heating in the house other than a paraffin heater in the depths of winter.

It's Shakespearean gulligranny

From Twelfth Night, Viola says of herself:

She sat like patience on a monument,
Smiling at grief. Was not this love indeed?

Like a lost fart in a thunderstorm.

Is that what nutty slack was?

I'm embarrassed to say I thought it must be some kind of sweetie. blush

Mum called it a bag of slack.
Delivered by Mr Pitt the coalman, (Honestly!)

Sometimes I think I look like a sack of potatoes ☹

My nana used to say they had ‘got a face like a bag of spanners’ about people she didn’t like - I never quite got if it meant they were ugly, or miserable (or maybe both).

Waiting at a bus stop, aged about fifteen, I stood back (as trained by my Mother) to allow people to get off. A huge lady waiting behind me, with a strong Irish accent, announced 'Do yer want this bus? Yer standin' there like one o' clock half struck'. I found this so funny that I roared with laughter - and it makes me smile even now,

I've not heard that for years!
My mum used to say it.

JaneJudge Sun 22-Sept-24 18:24:48

I've lived with coal fires and had forgotten about slack!

Kim19 Sun 22-Sept-24 18:21:39

I remember my Grandad backing up the fire for overnight with nutty slack. Kind of walnut size pieces of coal kept in a separate container. My Granny referred to them as chirilles.

He/she is neither use nor ornament.

MissAdventure Sun 22-Sept-24 17:20:54

No, I was only a small child when we had a coal fire.

The ex, up in the wilds of Scotland had a coal fire, but he dealt with it.

have you never made a coal fire ?
now i really do feel old.
i thought everyone grown up must have done.

BigBopper Sun 22-Sept-24 16:41:30

My dad used to say that. It was what cheap coal used to be called in the old days. It caused a lot of health problems and fog.

JaneJudge Sun 22-Sept-24 16:27:36
