Sadly I'm all too familiar with bladder issues and the assoicated broken nights. When it gets too much, my go to solution is an over the counter travel sickness tablet called Phenergan. A whole 25g tablet knocks me out, but leaves me feeling jaded the next day. A half tablet guarantees a good sleep with no after effects the following day. Sometimes that's enough to restore a good sleeping routine ........... unti the next time wink

I think the main sleep-inducer there is Promethazine, the same as the one in Night Nurse. I find I am just the same as you do, very dopey the following day unless modestly dosed.

I woke roughly every two hours last night, but I went back to sleep fairly quickly, so that's an improvement.

My legs are swollen and so, so itchy, lately.
I dare not start, or I'm awake all night like a grasshopper, rubbing my legs together to try and not scratch them.

my bladder wakes me approx every 2 hours throughout the night, it is wonderful if I have a 3 hour sleep.. been to the docs several times over the years... no infection,, so nothing...

I'm watching Sky Arts Book Club after a bit of William and Mary .
I slept for a few hours before waking up in the early hours .
Just had a hot drink and a biscuit and I'm hoping for a couple of hours sleep from five onwards .
But I know that my neighbour's dog will wake me as she gets agitated and barks when she gets up and showers for work.
Living in close proximity means that I know her routine.

Me too Grammaretto! Wide awake with a cuppa right now.

I'm going to find something to watch that's not too boring but not interesting enough to stop me dropping off.

Grammaretto Wed 25-Sept-24 02:23:23

I have broken sleep too. I'm wide awake now and just glad I don't have to get up at dawn.
Most days I have a short nap in the late afternoon. This is maybe why I wake in the night.
I don't really mind and listen to the radio or read a bit and come on here.

My sleep is all over the place lately.
I think I'm turning into a hamster.

I was awake hourly for over an hour each time last night.

I've been having problems staying awake during the day, so am trying to reset everything.

Sometimes I can go straight back to sleep after visiting the loo in the night, other times I start worrying or thinking about unimportant things.
Last night I spent ages trying to remember someone's surname! Why? It wasn't at all important but when I did remember I must have then fallen asleep promptly.

I generally get up several times in the night to wee. Have covid atm so am not sleeping anyway due to the virus kicking off at night.
But, anyhow, when I went through the menopause my sleep pattern changed for the worse and never recovered. I think for many women is the same.

My routine for going to sleep involves writing a story in my head. Every night it's the same story which I try to improve, basically I bore myself to sleep!

keepingquiet Tue 24-Sept-24 20:33:21

I don't think its insomnia but getting up to have a wee in the night- the two are not the same.

I usually get up once for a wee having slept before my bladder woke me and then go back to sleep after. That isn't insomnia.

I’ve put this up before but it’s worth repeating.
Many years ago my sleep was so awful that I went to a therapist who specialised in sleep disorders.
The theory is training the brain.
Choose a mantra/ counting backwards/ anything that’s the same every night.
To begin with it will take a time but you will eventually go to sleep. After a while ( a week?) the brain will get the message, ah, this is where I go to sleep.
Another thing to do at the same time is breath slowly and relax your face.

keepingquiet Tue 24-Sept-24 08:10:24

And this isn't insomnia- it is old age!

keepingquiet Tue 24-Sept-24 08:09:43

My bladder is my alarm clock. It reminds me to go back to bed afterwards!

GrannyIvy Tue 24-Sept-24 07:18:53

I have sympathy too. Our first conversation of the day is how did you sleep to each other!
DH usually wakes at 4 and reads his kindle and struggles to get any more sleep. I tend to sleep for two hours at a time only, struggle to get back to sleep but most nights get around 6 hours in total of broken sleep. I don’t nap in the afternoon but DH does. I think it is an age thing as I remember my parents being the same!

Sara1954 Tue 24-Sept-24 06:14:21

I have sympathy, I really do.
I’m going through a bad sleeping phase, I can never understand why I could close my eyes and be asleep instantly during the day, but see every hour of the night.
I normally get up for an hour, make a cup of tea and read my book, but I need to be up at 5.45 so if I’m not asleep by 5.00 I give up.
I’ve tried everything, I’ve just ordered something else which promises me restful sleep, but I’m not expecting it to work

JamesandJon33 Tue 24-Sept-24 06:05:58

Sallywally seems I’m very much like you. Up every three hours for the loo. Always manage to go back to sleep before four o’clock. After that I usually give up trying and read my kindle.

Sallywally1 Tue 24-Sept-24 05:53:53

Thanks for the kindly replies. I can always rely on the gransnetters sympathy! No I did not get back to sleep and it is now nearly 6.00. DH who sleeps in another room as I am so restless will wake up soon and ask me if I had a good nights sleep! I have trained myself to be polite as he is easily offended!

Tuaim Tue 24-Sept-24 05:51:51

Hello! I woke up at 3.15 a.m. Why? Because I went to sleep at 9.30 p.m. which was way to early and have had my core sleep but am facing hours before everyone else wakes up. I will soon be going to sleep at 4 p.m. and be wide awake at midnight! Back to bed because I am going to a new hairdresser tomorrow/today who is a bit of an eccentric character so must be looking my best to look even better!

grandMattie Tue 24-Sept-24 05:30:24

Ditto, though not the bladder - yet!
My problem isn’t going to sleep, it’s staying asleep!
I manage about 5 hours in all per night…. I try to have a nap in the afternoon but it’s astonishing how many people of my age think it’s disgraceful. (I suspect they fall asleep in front of the telly in the afternoons but don’t admit to it).

Esmay Tue 24-Sept-24 03:12:43

Join the insomnia club .
I'm watching Coppelia on Sky then I'll try to go back to sleep !

Sweetpeasue Tue 24-Sept-24 03:08:17

Sallywally1 Second for me too. Oh the bladder business is a pain isn't it. Have seen your previous posts about it. I do sympathise. Hope you're now in the land of nod! X

Sallywally1 Tue 24-Sept-24 03:03:11

Second time woken up tonight, happens every night, wretched bladder! Going to have another go to enter the land of nod! Now 3.00 am!
