Has anyone been watching the M&S: Dress the Nation TV programme? It seems to be very a group of young would be designers, hoping to win a job designing for M&S. they are all young (well compared to me, an OAP), and all their designs seem far to way out for people like me, and everything is geared towards very young people. I wish M&S would use older designers too, so that we OAPs could shop at M&S regularly.

Older than say 40 is just too unappealing for the fashion folk.
I feel like mounting a campaign for equal representation in retail!
And I shall demand POCKETS yes real ones not fake ones mind.
But need a nap first as it is bound to involve computer savvyness and thin agile fingers, ..so🤔

I prefer LandsEnd, Cotton Traders, and Chums.
M&S are ok for big knickers but I don’t ordinarily buy anything else from them.

One thing I really wish they’d do again, is plain, fine knit, roll neck, long! jumpers. I practically live in their ‘cosy’ jeggings in winter and I do like tops to cover my arse!

only buy food occasionally at M&S.. the clothes are too conventional

I went through period of not liking anything in M and S and then , over the last two summers I've liked the summer dresses .
Some of them seem to have been inspired by the Princess of Wales .
When I was a teenager I loved kilts with polo necks and opaque tights .
M and S sold them .
I had Black Watch and Royal Stewart kilts .
Later , I liked twinset with them .
I read that kilts were in again .
Maybe they are , but not in M and S !

I buy all my straight leg jeans from them as their ‘long’ fits me, I also buy the odd jumper for myself and MrJ, oh, their soft socks too.
The younger shopper is becoming their fastest growing market.

I have never been an M&S shopper their clothes always seem to be aimed at women 20 years older than me. I am now over 80.

I haven't watched this series, I cannot honestly say it offes any attractions

I walked through M&S last weekend, as dreary as usual.

No, me neither. I went to a large M&S near us the other week trying to find a pair of trousers for my elderly FiL and they had nothing suitable whatsoever. The women's clothes looked very dreary, as you say. I do pretty much any clothes shopping online now.

I used to buy their cropped jogging pants for years as I wore them all the time around the house. A few years ago they changed the cut and they were way too baggy. I haven't bought them since.

I have never got on with M&S bras.

I saw the last few minutes of the TV programme. I was expecting it to be similar to Sewing Bee but the clothes seemed to be more outrageous. The ones I saw looked quite amateurish and not something I would think many people would find appealing. Or maybe I'm too old and untrendy

Just been charity shopping- tried on some real bargains including a M&S Per Una jumper that cost me £7. Also tried on an Austin reed tailored dress that cost £8 but didn't fit and a Monsoon dress for £6 that was just a little short.

I agree with others I ve never been a fan of M and S clothes way too ordinary and boring I ve bought the odd bra or pants but that’s about it and like Monica says they always seem aimed at people older than me ( if you can get much older)
🤣🤣🤣 I prefer something a bit less ordinary and a bit more whacky

nanna8 Fri 27-Sept-24 14:32:00

I think the old word ‘frumpish’ might be a description of their stuff. I used to like their bras and pants and bathers and I would buy them online but now everything from there costs far too much since they ‘discovered’ the Australian market. I’d be willing to bet the market here has crashed for them now and they deserve that.

Casdon Fri 27-Sept-24 14:42:41

I think they have very considerably upped their game. Their jeans are excellent, their dress trousers exceptional in quality and value, and their basics are good too. They are much more trend driven than they used to be, and a lot more younger women are shopping there, but I think that’s a good thing, as demonstrated by their profits. Three years ago I’d have agreed with you that they had lost their touch, now, I don’t.

I buy my bras and knickers at M &S but everything else is so dull.

Is this not meant to be about the TV programme rather than a(nother) critique of M&S?

joannapiano Fri 27-Sept-24 15:39:49

I watched the first programme, it’s Sewing Bee lite. Really bad finishes on most garments. Certainly not your typical Marks clothes, but in a bad way. Did not watch the second episode.

dalrymple23 Fri 27-Sept-24 15:55:33

Their sizing has been all over the place for years. Clothes made in China are far too small. Those made in India are too large. Ridiculous. A size 12 should be a size 12 everywhere.

Their knitwear has always been far too short. But this has been the same for decades. I do not want a pullover terminating above my navel! I used to go to the men's department for my woolies.

these are all reasons why most of us have not bothered to watch this programme - as well as some very poor (and sometmes quite funny(ha-ha) reviews.

I haven't bought anything in M&S since the 1980's and never heard of the tv programme.

Oh yes, the Bridget Jones's knickers.

I never did like cheese cutter knickers even when I was a teenager!

I bought some plain, pull-on warm trousers last year for wearing about the house, they were easy to wear and not baggy like jogging bottoms. They stopped doing them, of course

Casdon Fri 27-Sept-24 16:16:52

The OP was asking why they no longer cater to the older ladies market, and that’s what people are responding to? I did watch it, and against the Gransnet tide, I think the strategy has worked, because they were in big financial trouble, and now they aren’t. With clothes it’s each to their own though, so nobody is right or wrong about it.

Allira Fri 27-Sept-24 16:18:21

I watched about five minutes of one programme but 😴

Allira Fri 27-Sept-24 16:20:45

Their website is slow and cumbersome too.
Perhaps they should pay attention to that as well.

foxie48 Fri 27-Sept-24 17:02:54

I popped into our local M&S and was surprised by the range, thought it had greatly improved. I bought a pair of bootcut jeans that I'm really pleased with and saw several pieces I'd have tried on if I'd had more time. Apparently 12,000 are waiting for their leopard print jeans to come back into stock!
