What an actress! From The Prime if Miss Jean Brodie onwards.

Maggie Smith was an incredibly gifted actress.
And now her legacy can be seen on screen forever.
Rest in peace , Dame Maggie and thank you for giving me so much pleasure . 🌹

RIP for a wonderful actor who brought joy to so many on stage and screen flowers.

Grandma70s
I loved the Lady in the Van too, but my favourite memory is her role in the final Harry Potter film.

Grandma70s Fri 27-Sept-24 16:35:47

I saw her as Desdemona with Laurence Olivier as Othello, a very long time ago. She was very young, I was even younger. I think I stood all the way through, because I could only get a standing room ticket. Wish I’d kept the programme.

Loved The Lady in the Van

RIP.

Mamie Fri 27-Sept-24 16:28:40

I first saw her as Desdemona when I was doing Othello for A level....

HelterSkelter1 Fri 27-Sept-24 16:24:52

I loved her in A Room with a View as well and Gosford Park. I must watch them again on a rainy aftenoon as I have the DVDs. Wonderful actress. Her theatrical friends must be so sad.

I'm surprised that BAFTA's statement has said she was best known for Harry Potter and Downton Abbey. They may have introduced her to a younger audience butI think Jean Brodie was one of her iconic roles.

Witzend Fri 27-Sept-24 16:20:13

So sad, she was brilliant.
I’ll never forget seeing her live in the theatre, doing one of Alan Bennett’s monologues - ‘Bed Among the lentils’ IIRC, where she played a hard pressed, much put upon and wearied Vicar’s wife.

Set opened with her IIRC polishing various bits around the altar - she then turned around and said, ‘Well, Geoffrey’s bad enough, but I’m glad I’m not married to Jesus.’

The entire theatre erupted in fits.

Sad loss of an amazing lady and actress, my favourite film of hers was Lady in van, just brilliant 💐

Professor McGonagall. RIP. A wonderful and very versatile actress who could deliver some withering one-liners. A huge loss to film, TV and theatre.

Allira Fri 27-Sept-24 16:05:53

And from me too. What a versatile, wonderful actress she was.

“Oh no!” was my immediate reaction. What a loss, but what a legacy she left behind.

MaizieD Fri 27-Sept-24 15:53:25

Another 'Oh NO' from me. Inevitable though it is that our greats grow old and die it is very sad all the same.

Fantastic actress. It's good that we have so much of her work to look back on and enjoy.

Magnificent Actress, RIP lovely lady.

Oh, that's sad. She was one of the finest.
DH worked with her on several productions at The Haymarket. She took on some intense roles.
A very nice lady too. We have a Wedding congrats card from her in our scrapbook.

Redhead56 Fri 27-Sept-24 15:34:59

My favourite was when she was in one of Alan Bennett’s monologues. A truly great actress with a truly great script. Bed. Among the Lentils in the Talking Heads series

Such sad news. A great actor who will be missed by us all.

Calendargirl Fri 27-Sept-24 15:24:48

And how beautiful she was in her earlier roles.

You forget how ‘young’ she once was, because she has been acting for so many decades.

Calendargirl Fri 27-Sept-24 15:21:42

A true star, who really deserved the title ‘actress’.

Will be sadly missed.

Cossy Fri 27-Sept-24 15:21:28
