Shock in Sainsbury’s! (In a good way.)

I picked up a half leg of lamb and thought there must be a mistake on the label - £7.33 with Nectar card, £14.67! without. And there were others the same.

No problem at the self checkout - it went through at £7.33.
So that’s our Sunday dinner sorted.🙂

I like that some of my favourite purchases are often reduced. I had an email the other day to say I was the top buyer of cherry tomatoes and goat's cheese in my town 😂
We were in Sainsbury's the other day and sister was buying everyday wine glasses, they were half price when she went through the checkout.

Scotch lamb is also very good. We were caught out recently by not having read the box properly when we bought M&S lamb shanks. The lamb was from New Zealand! Why??

According to a very ‘foodie’ friend, Romney Marsh lamb is the best, but I’ve certainly never seen it. He probably goes to a specialist butcher and pays £££.

we couldn't even buy Romney Lamb when we were staying there for the music festival. I imagine there are certain times in the year when it is available..

What does half price mean? Half what price? Normally the initial price is inflated so then the shop drops the price to a realistic one and says it’s half price and people get excited. It was probably too high to start with. Kitchen and double glazing companies do this.

British lamb is expensive anyway. I nearly had a fit the other week when I saw the price of a whole leg - OK a biggish one - in Waitrose.
I doubt that the higher price on mine had been inflated.

Warning… Co-op deals are not easy to access if you’re away from your local one… we’ve just been on holiday not that far from home and I took the 2 Co-op cards I have, one yellow and one blue. Neither was acceptable because it was a different area. Apparently there are 5 different Co-op areas!

I have a "National" card as well as a local one.
It's very old though...

Several times a year,, Tesco has half price lamb. Albeit NZ. A whole leg is cheaper per kilo than a half. Instead of having to ferret around the toolbox, I bought a kitchen hacksaw! Depending upon the size of the leg, it can be cut into two or three joints. Plenty for two people. The same can be done with breast. Just a suggestion.

henetha Sat 28-Sept-24 14:31:45

PS. What a brilliant bargain that leg of lamb was. smile

I like my loyalty cards and go round looking for the items reduced. I'm convinced I find some bargains. If not, well it makes me happy anyway.
Let's have more positivity.

I hate the discounts on these cards, I wish they'd just do a fair price for everyone. I'm sick of needing to have cards for Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Boots etc but well done on the Sunday dinner, it does sound a bargain.

Goodness, someone posts a bit of good news. Any need to be so negative?

Mt61 Sat 28-Sept-24 13:12:17

Why can’t SM just sell stuff at a normal price instead of hiking the prices so you think you are getting a bargain.
I see people going through the checkout who have no loyalty card- I’ve offered mine but got told off (but same checkout lady) did the very same thing the week after, got her nectar card out her pocket & used it to scan the guys shopping (I said, “you aren’t daft”).
Just a ploy to keep an eye on what we are buying

Shinamae Sat 28-Sept-24 12:48:20

Yes I get some good deals at Tesco’s with their Clubcard but I’ve been buying a protein shake drink for £1 and when I went down the other day it had gone up to £1.15. (Not 5p,not 10p but straight up to 15p, they have no shame )So supporting the theory that other prices make up for the Clubcard discounts.🙄

We have just discovered the Co-op offers. Two weeks ago we had two beautiful steaks and a pack of three times cooked chips for £4 with our card. We added a Diane sauce for £1.50. it was delicious.
Last week we had the meal deal. Two mains, one side and a bottle of wine for £10.

It’s marketing ploys and people fall for it.

Fall for what? A good deal?

I’m a supermarket tart, with no loyalty to any of them, and I’ll be looking for that in Sainsbury’s. Just as I popped down to our new local Co-op yesterday with my Co-op card and the £5 and £3 vouchers they put through our letterbox. I could use both at once so ended up paying just £12 for a £10 meal deal for 2 including a bottle of wine, two steaks and a side, five items worth £16 in the 5 for £5 deal, and some cheese, bread and butter.

I really don’t feel that I’ve been ripped off. smile

Your friend is correct, sheep grazed on the Romney salt marshes has a unique flavour. It is expensive but worth every penny as a treat. I've mostly just had it in local restaurants when in that area.

JaneJudge Sat 28-Sept-24 10:23:55

I thought the best lamb was salt marsh

My late MiL, who worked as a butcher for most of her life, used to say all the time that she couldn't understand why here in Scotland, we were surrounded by fields full of sheep, yet the shops were full of New Zealand lamb.

Granmarderby10 Sat 28-Sept-24 10:12:31

Woollywoman this why I haven’t bothered with Co-op loyalty cards; they are way too complicated.
Our rather substandard local co-op plays a lot of instore radio with frequent mention of Co-op funeral services. Stunning!

Pardon me for being so sensitive but, this is not what I want when trying to shop for ingredients.

Welsh Lamb is the best, but very expensive.

Hardly a marketing ploy in my case. I had no idea about any such reductions until I was actually looking at the various joints.

They are called loyalty cards for a reason. Why shouldn't you get some good deals if you are a regular customer? The supermarkets are in competition with each other after all.

Not if you take advantage to buy something you were going to buy anyway but get it cheaper than it is elsewhere, it’s just sensible shopping then.

Presumably they want to maintain their profit margins so we must all be paying a little bit more for everything else to fund these deals.

Absolutely, I’m sure there must be people who go to all the supermarkets to get their best deals every week, as long as you stick to those, others will be the ones paying the price - I don’t do that, but I do always look for the Nectar deals. They have genuine end of season markdowns there too.
