Shock in Sainsbury’s! (In a good way.)

I picked up a half leg of lamb and thought there must be a mistake on the label - £7.33 with Nectar card, £14.67! without. And there were others the same.

No problem at the self checkout - it went through at £7.33.
So that’s our Sunday dinner sorted.🙂

That’s good value. Nectar card savings are often good, I always look out for them. I got a lovely furry heated throw a couple of weeks ago for £45, originally £103.

It’s marketing ploys and people fall for it.

I don’t see that it is unless you buy lots of other things at full price. A leg of lamb is £20 in Iceland so which ever way you look at it it was a bargain and I will be looking for one tomorrow when we do our shopping.

I hate the discounts on these cards, I wish they'd just do a fair price for everyone. I'm sick of needing to have cards for Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons, Boots etc but well done on the Sunday dinner, it does sound a bargain.

theworriedwell Fri 27-Sept-24 16:51:44

I assume they do it to get lots of information on our buying habits. Data is valuable.

We shop in Morrisons and have a 'more card'.
They have also started to reduce items if you scan this card.
Items change each week.
Last week I bought Gillette razors for DH full price was £8.99 I purchased for £4.
Kenco coffee was £7 I got for £5.
I don't know when they started this, I only noticed last week.

Not if you take advantage to buy something you were going to buy anyway but get it cheaper than it is elsewhere, it’s just sensible shopping then.

Presumably they want to maintain their profit margins so we must all be paying a little bit more for everything else to fund these deals.

Absolutely, I’m sure there must be people who go to all the supermarkets to get their best deals every week, as long as you stick to those, others will be the ones paying the price - I don’t do that, but I do always look for the Nectar deals. They have genuine end of season markdowns there too.

Wheniwasyourage Fri 27-Sept-24 17:19:43

They are called loyalty cards for a reason. Why shouldn't you get some good deals if you are a regular customer? The supermarkets are in competition with each other after all.

Woollywoman Fri 27-Sept-24 17:50:37

Warning… Co-op deals are not easy to access if you’re away from your local one… we’ve just been on holiday not that far from home and I took the 2 Co-op cards I have, one yellow and one blue. Neither was acceptable because it was a different area. Apparently there are 5 different Co-op areas!

Hardly a marketing ploy in my case. I had no idea about any such reductions until I was actually looking at the various joints.

Grabs coat and rushes off to Sainburys 👋

Welsh Lamb is the best, but very expensive.

Wheniwasyourage Sat 28-Sept-24 10:01:55

Scotch lamb is also very good. We were caught out recently by not having read the box properly when we bought M&S lamb shanks. The lamb was from New Zealand! Why??

According to a very ‘foodie’ friend, Romney Marsh lamb is the best, but I’ve certainly never seen it. He probably goes to a specialist butcher and pays £££.

Woollywoman this why I haven’t bothered with Co-op loyalty cards; they are way too complicated.
Our rather substandard local co-op plays a lot of instore radio with frequent mention of Co-op funeral services. Stunning!

Pardon me for being so sensitive but, this is not what I want when trying to shop for ingredients.

My late MiL, who worked as a butcher for most of her life, used to say all the time that she couldn't understand why here in Scotland, we were surrounded by fields full of sheep, yet the shops were full of New Zealand lamb.

JaneJudge Sat 28-Sept-24 10:23:55

I thought the best lamb was salt marsh

Your friend is correct, sheep grazed on the Romney salt marshes has a unique flavour. It is expensive but worth every penny as a treat. I've mostly just had it in local restaurants when in that area.

Fall for what? A good deal?

I’m a supermarket tart, with no loyalty to any of them, and I’ll be looking for that in Sainsbury’s. Just as I popped down to our new local Co-op yesterday with my Co-op card and the £5 and £3 vouchers they put through our letterbox. I could use both at once so ended up paying just £12 for a £10 meal deal for 2 including a bottle of wine, two steaks and a side, five items worth £16 in the 5 for £5 deal, and some cheese, bread and butter.

I really don’t feel that I’ve been ripped off. smile

Kate1949 Sat 28-Sept-24 12:40:59

We have just discovered the Co-op offers. Two weeks ago we had two beautiful steaks and a pack of three times cooked chips for £4 with our card. We added a Diane sauce for £1.50. it was delicious.
Last week we had the meal deal. Two mains, one side and a bottle of wine for £10.

Shinamae Sat 28-Sept-24 12:48:20

Yes I get some good deals at Tesco’s with their Clubcard but I’ve been buying a protein shake drink for £1 and when I went down the other day it had gone up to £1.15. (Not 5p,not 10p but straight up to 15p, they have no shame )So supporting the theory that other prices make up for the Clubcard discounts.🙄
