I know this is a recurrent theme on Gransnet but I find it very interesting and amusing. Please indulge me.

My MIL gave me a really cheap salt and pepper set once for my birthday, the sort you used to find in greasy spoon cafes. She had been to stay and was cross because no matter how hard she shook the the salt or the pepper grinder nothing came out of the top.

I worked in a club for a while, and saw them there, behind the scenes, as it were.

That's my tentative foray into the world of fame. smile

We had a thread about that once; it wasn't about famous people we'd met, or knew well.

The more tentative it was, the better.

On four alternate years, umbrella and apron from late MIL as she ‘couldn’t think what to buy me!. I think she considered me to be undomesticated! I did work full time and had three children, but in her eyes that was no excuse. She never had to work.

Sallywally1 She sounds like my MIL. She had not gone out to work since the day she married but was highly critical of my (lack of) domestic skills, despite the fact I had children and a full-time job. She always bought me 'useful' presents like metal teapots, tea towels or even a plastic washing up brush.

I'd been vegetarian for decades, but my mother would buy me leather bags and purses.
