Strange noises

Is it an outside cavity wall?
We had very odd scratching sounds in one house, in a bedroom. It turned out to be bats.
Another time we had a squirrel (neighbour's loft had several which took up residence).
We also have a squeaking noise which was very difficult to trace. It turned out to be the fridge and a refrigeration engineer said it was just the evaporator system, nothing to worry about.

We heard the scritching paper noise one night in a B&B out in the countryside. It sounded as though it came from the fireplace. After trying to ignore it for a while we got up to look for what we thought was a mouse. We discovered the chimney throat was blocked with scrunched-up newspaper (it was midsummer, no fire risk) When we took that out the culprit was unmasked - a very young bat, which was very frightened and flew about the room.. We opened the sash window further (the top was already open a few inches) and turned out the light. After a couple of circuits round the room, it saw the open window and went out.

Next morning at breakfast, we told the B&B owner that we had had a little visitor in the night. "Oh, was it a bat?" she asked. "The entrance to the roost is just above your wIndow . . . " The poor wee thing had mistaken the open window for his front door, and had to take refuge in the scrunched newspaper.

I sometimes hear thuds, as if someone is kicking a football on the wall. There are no young children in these houses.

When I lie down on bed I often hear a noise like the helicopter overhead. I have even looked out to see if the police or coastguard are up.
I don't hear it in other rooms and can't work out what it is.

Worrying🧐

I suppose it must be a mouse, have checked the lamp/ light bulbs and they seem fine.I expect it will be behind a wall.

I live in a house that was built in 1997, so relatively new. Sometimes it creaks like an old sailing ship. I used to lie awake and worry about it, but rarely do now. It never seemed to bother DH. He would just say “Go to sleep - we’re insured!”

It's this one. I use Nutella in the bait section - works every time. But you need to put it along a skirting board near where you're sitting (when you go to bed).

Humane not human.

We do get mice now and then - rural area and old house. Any paper on the floor and they will investigate for nesting material. You sometimes don't know until you set a mouse trap but it has to be the right place. Sorry to any animal lovers but we found the best one is actually an electronic rat trap - looks like a tunnel. I think it's human as it's instant.

I lived in a house which was built in 1775. The interior walls were lath and plaster. One day I was standing in the sitting room when I heard a crackling of paper type of sound. It came from behind a light switch. On removing the plastic cover we discovered an electrical fire in the wall. I dread to think what would have happened had we not been in the room at that precise time.

Electrical fault perhaps? One of our side lights sometimes does this. Otherwise a creature, mouse, rat, bees, wasps etc.

We’ve had mice in our previous home and they either sound like a herd of elephants or they make a scritch scratch kind of noise, which could be considered papery.

This is the time of year when mice are looking for cosy winter quarters.

Elless Tue 01-Oct-24 10:21:57

If it is mice they could be behind the skirting boards.

I agree with gentleshores. Sounds very much like mice. Eek!

My friend’s sister in law lives in a semi-sheltered flat and is forever complaining about noise from the people above her - tv, footsteps etc. She is also convinced they are somehow spying on her.

She lives in a top floor flat.

My experience of crackling paper sounds is it's usually a mouse!

We've had a strange sound come from upstairs around 9 or 10 at night. Sounds like the cat jumping off a bed, but happens when cat is out! Also heating could be on or off, though probably related to temperature change.

🙀
A cat jumping off a bed thud is very disturbing!

Is there a faulty connection with one of your light bulbs? I heard a similar noise for a couple of evenings last winter, and one of the screw in light bulbs on a wall light was crackling, it had come very slightly loose.

Terraced, but the sounds are localised to very near where I sit.
Obvs being terraced we do hear some noises from other houses mainly when they plug something into the wall sockets, muffled sounds of music/tv at times. This is a very quiet paper crackling sort of noise.
I will try the bulbs see if they’re ok, it’s a def possibility thanks.

Are you semi attached /terraced ?

Every evening when at home, watching tv, or listening to music or the radio, or just reading when it gets to 9pm or a bit later, there are strange noises from close to where I sit, a bit like crackling paper, very odd. Only recently this is.It’s an old house so it could be anything but it’s curious. We have no evidence of mice and no pets.
Anyone else get strange noises in the house?
