I have been listening to this recently. The more you listen, the more you hear it seems. It is very moving, written all those years ago, I think around 1690. Do you have any pieces of music or songs you have ‘rediscovered’ ?

Oh golly - that’s my favourite piece of music! I also love The Swan by Camille Saint-Saëns, Lark Ascending by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus, which I recently belted out with the rest of the audience at the Proms!! Other than that I’m pretty much a Classic fm girl rather than a Radio 3 expert!

My late DH and I walked out the church at our wedding to the Vidor Toccata, it was a big church!
I also love Pachelbel’s Canon, and Chasing Cars!
Some lovely suggestions on this thread. My mum had a lovely voice and I hear her humming the Humming chorus and lots of arias. They often make me sad, although she died 27 years ago.

I love The Dark Island. I am moved to tears by Lux Aeterna sung by Voces 8 which I chose for my father’s funeral. I would like to hear it live.

Faure's requiem is sublime, I must "rediscover " that tomorrow

Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana and of course, like others have mentioned up thread, Chasing Cars.

This is one of my favourite pieces of music after I first heard it in Godfather III. They played it when his daughter got shot.
I have just made a flash drive with classical music for the car and this is on it. Another piece of music is from the film Crash. It is called Flames and sung in Welsh.

You beat me to it! I adore this piece of music - it takes me to somewhere very special in my mind. Several years ago now I used it at an infant nativity play - something a little different to the usual shepherds in tea towels - when the angel Gabriel came to give Mary her Baby. He started the angel’s arms and they gently danced together - mirroring movements to the music and then the Baby was very slowly and gently delivered to Mary. Sounds a bit crass but the children were very innocent delightful and brings tears to my eyes when I remember. I’ve got a copy in a dvd somewhere - I must dig it out.

Yes I love this too. They seem to play it quite often on Classic fm.

'Crossing the Bar' sung by the Spooky Men's Chorus is absolutely sublime. You can get it on YouTube, along with lots of other things they sing . However, you may be quite surprised by the other things!

Another nice one and chosen for boat trip to accompany my mother on her last journey when her ashes were placed on the sea as she requested

Giacomo Puccini: "Coro a bocca chiusa" (Humming Chorus) from Madame Butterfly

I had to find an extra bit for my mother's funeral.

She had chosen Faure's Requiem and

So many beautiful pieces of music mentioned and remembered but ever since seeing the film “Brassed Off” many years ago it has to be Joaquin Rodrigo’s Concerto de Aranjuez.

@Zaran, I didn’t know Star Candles so I looked it up on YouTube. It is beautiful.

Chanson de Matin by Elgar is one of my all-time favourites, as is Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring by Bach. The second movement of Mozart’s piano concerto no. 20 and Schubert’s Improptu in G flat major are beautiful and very moving. There are so many others l could name,

Emphatically Thomas Tallis “Spem in Alium”. Glorious.
Many others including Handel “Eternal Light of Love Divine” for soprano and trumpet. An unlikely pairing but gorgeous.

I absolutely love Pachelbel 's Canon in D major. Probably my all time single favourite piece of music

Zaran Thu 03-Oct-24 16:23:46

Star Candles by Michael Head. Christmas music, lovely choral piece. We used to sing it as school in the 1960’s. It’s not often heard today, but I have recently found the sheet music on eBay, and will be driving my family nuts playing this over the holiday.

Greyduster Thu 03-Oct-24 16:13:08

GrammarGrandma it must have been a bigger church😁!

Gillycats Thu 03-Oct-24 16:10:49

Cannon is wonderful. There are so many wonderful works to chose from but I do like Delibes Flower Duet (perhaps my first classical favourite) and Barber’s Adagio for Strings, though it’s quite sad.

Ktsmum Thu 03-Oct-24 16:10:40

The humming chorus from Madame .Butterfly, she is keeping vigil for Pinkerton but the audience knows he's not coming back😪
Also the flower duet and the duet from the pearl fishers

I like Pachebel’s Canon, we had a lovely piano/Cello version played at a concert. It was lovely to catch a hint of it in in Memories by Maroon5.

Aveline

I recently found Pachelbels canon played very seriously by rubber chicken. It just popped up on my Facebook feed. I don't know how to post a link. Sorry. It was funny but nice too.

Here it is:

Greyduster My daughter DID walk out of church to the Vidor Toccata!

GrannaKaye Thu 03-Oct-24 15:09:14

Thank you all for this; I have just started my foray into Classical music again (stopped listening in my late teens) and so looking forward to discovering/rediscovering all those mentioned here. One of my favourites, long before the movie "10", was Ravel's Bolero.

Rosie51 Thu 03-Oct-24 15:06:24

HiPpyChick57 Sorry to say it goes on too long for me, and the piano part gets on my nerves eventually. Like the cello though. Good job we're all different.
