Why is everybody referred to as “lovely” ?
You know the sort of thing, I suspect I am guilty of it too.
“My lovely cleaner, my lovely hairdresser, my lovely gardener etc?”
This from a post by our local WI FB group (place names redacted))
What a fabulous day out with our lovely WI ladies to The Kings Gallery and the Royal Mews - plus we were joined from a couple of lovely ladies from xxxxxxxxxx WI too
A superb day out with lots of lovely chats over tea and coffee getting to know one another a little better 😍 and two fabulous exhibitions that we all really enjoyed 🎉
Huge thanks to lovely xxxxx from xxxxxx Coaches for getting us there safely and huge thanks to all the lovely ladies on the trip

AIBU to find this all a bit saccharine and 🤮🤮🤮🤮

I don't mind lovely as long as it's not used too much. Better than fabulous or fantastic used a lot by celebrities.

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 20:10:27

What would you use instead?

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 20:19:19

Seeing as nobody seems to be suggesting alternatives, I've just googled, where it suggests, alluring, and a couple of others, and quickly moves onto gorgeous, stunning, and words that to me, are far more effusive than I'd use.

Not that I'd say I met an alluring woman, anyway.

I do try not to use lovely too much and remember words my mum used. A pleasant woman. A beautiful morning. The food was delicious. Lovely could have been used.

In Ireland - "grand" is often a reply to a question. Eg "how was your trip?"

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 20:22:00

Thank you.
That's very alluring of you. wink

AGAA4 Sat 05-Oct-24 20:23:58

Long time since I was called alluring. A very long time 😀

I don't like being addressed as 'lovely', it sounds patronising, 'this won't hurt, lovely..' particularly medical people.

Not just lovely as an adjective but as a personal pronoun - people in shops seem to call me ‘lovely’ all the time eg “Thank you lovely.”

Here in Gloucestershire, you get called "my lovely".

Particularly by medical staff.

Suggestions for alternatives to "lovely ":
pleasant, charming, delightful, enjoyable , amusing, agreeable
More suggestions please!
By the way, I find that bus drivers, shop assistants and café staff are calling me "my lovely". Has anyone else experienced that? I rather like it!

Ziplok Sat 05-Oct-24 20:55:30

I’m sure it’s meant well. What alternative would you suggest?
I think sometimes, offence is looked for where none whatsoever is intended!

Marydoll Sat 05-Oct-24 20:55:45

I laughed when my consulatant called a lovely lady in a letter to my GP.

If only he knew....😉

Ziplok Sat 05-Oct-24 20:57:00

Dottydots 👍🏼😁

Wonderful? Great?
I hadn’t noticed the lovely ‘thing’ now I’ll start looking out for it.
I prob over use the word nice.Did you know that nice used to mean exact or so we were told at school.

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 21:03:01

A lot of the alternative words, I just wouldn't say about someone, unless I had a close personal relationship with them, or fancied them.

Bridie22 Sat 05-Oct-24 21:08:23

Miss A, what is a simp please 🤔?

Oreo Sat 05-Oct-24 21:09:30

Marvellous🤭

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 21:11:23

It's an overly complimentary person, from what I can make out.
One of those kinds of people who buy the boss a present for the boss out of their own money, as well as putting into the staff collection.

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 21:13:07

Sorry, bit rambly today.
Extra words, missing words, you name it; I'm doing it.

Bridie22 Sat 05-Oct-24 21:15:22

I get the jist Miss A... thought it might be a rude word !!!

fancythat Sat 05-Oct-24 21:16:37

Anything that makes the world seem a "nice"! place is fine with me.

MissAdventure Sat 05-Oct-24 21:17:14

Banish the thought, Bridie. grin

Maybe a simp comes from simpering, come to think of it?

Bridie22 Sat 05-Oct-24 21:17:16

Finger slipped... thought it might be a rude word i could use, i learnt how to swear in sign language today, ive practised it all day 🤣😂
