"That old lady"

At the supermarket last week, there were some young boys offering to help with packing. They belonged to a sports charity. I declined politely and just gave them a donation. I'd previously had a bad experience of squashed bread and fruit etc after letting someone else do my packing. I carried on and heard one of the group say "Have you asked that old lady?" I looked around but couldn't see any old dears and was horrified to realise they meant me. I'm 72 and still waiting to feel grown up. I do remember when I was 13, finding out that David McCallum was in his 30s and felt heartbroken that he was sooo old. When did you start to feel "old" or are you like me, still waiting?

When I got ill.

Since we were 50, DH and I have been growing down. We'd done the grown up stuff and it was boring so we decided that, as long as it didn't hurt anyone, we would do whatever we wanted regardless of what people thought. So if you see a rather large lady up a tree or playing in an adventure playground before the children arrive, that's probably me grin

I accept that I'm old (79) but I'm definitely not grown up ...

Surely, if you accept that you're old then you ARE old. I'm not letting that person in.

What a great attitude vampirequeen!

Old people behave with decorum, don't they?

I haven't reached that stage yet so I can't be old.

You're old, regardless.
All the trendy clothes and whatever makes no difference to the year you were born.

By "you", I mean "one".

There is nothing wrong with being old; it's natural.

Me?
Or "one"? smile

75 is officially old but age is but a number. When I was in my early 60's one of my granddaughters who was helping me celebrate my birthday informed me that I was 'getting to really big numbers now, Granny'.

I agree Miss A. We are what we are. Its a strange thing this reluctance to be otherwise.

Perhaps it depends on extrenal factors? I was a much older Mum than many, so I fitted in with 20 somethings when I was nearly 40.
My own parents were extremely old and I wasn't " like that"
Now I am old. It is what it is.

There are some people in their 50s who act and look older than me!

Georgesgran Wed 09-Oct-24 13:03:18

I don’t think I look particularly old (73) or act my age. However DGS1 has been learning about the Great Fire of London - so I listed off some statistics. He looked at me quizzically then asked ‘how do you know all that Grandma, were you there?’

keepingquiet Wed 09-Oct-24 13:08:34

It's ok. I'm still only 19. Don't know why I'm on Gransnet.

MissAdventure Wed 09-Oct-24 13:09:59

I'm eleventy leven.

When my hair got completely grey, a decision to stop colouring it was made during lockdown, and losing two and a half inches in height due to osteopoenia. When I look in a full length mirror now I see a little old lady.

Pippa000 Wed 09-Oct-24 13:17:28

On my 21st birthday, my 16 year old cousin commented that "as I was 21 and not married I was past it" !! What ever "it" was. Even now I'm 76 I still don't consider I'm past anything.

Usedtobeblonde Wed 09-Oct-24 13:21:39

I am 87 and definitely not "past it"
However I did feel old when my D informed me she was through the menopause.
That did rsther shock me.

I had it brought home to me a few weeks ago when I was reading with children in a school. I had just finished with one child when, on his way out, he came back and said “Do all old people forget things?” I answered him as honestly as I could and he said “Oh, that’s alright then. My granny forgets things but she says it’s because she’s old!” And off he went. Good to feel useful😂!

Allira
but are you old in your head
Yesterday we had visits from 3 neighbours. They all had a problem and as everyone knows I live with Mr Fixit.
Two of them were phone problems and one plumbing.
All 3 are in their mid 80s.
After the problems were fixed we obviously chatted in general.
Later in the day I was hit by the difference in the 3.
Two of them haven't joined the digital age at all.
The other one has every gizmo going. This one is on the ball by a long mile compared to the other 2.
The two who are non tech are completely dependent on their children.

My mum, now 90, was horrified when I showed her my brand new shiny bus pass - ‘ I can’t possibly be old enough for you to have that’ she said.

GrandmaKT Wed 09-Oct-24 13:36:46

My lycra-clad cycle group were whizzing through a park in Liverpool. As we passed a father with his two young sons, I heard one of them exclaim "Dad, I didn't know nannas could ride bikes!". Talk about literally taking the wind from my sails!

I'm eleventy eleven too, each morning before I get out of bed and realise I'm a bit older than that.
