"That old lady"

At the supermarket last week, there were some young boys offering to help with packing. They belonged to a sports charity. I declined politely and just gave them a donation. I'd previously had a bad experience of squashed bread and fruit etc after letting someone else do my packing. I carried on and heard one of the group say "Have you asked that old lady?" I looked around but couldn't see any old dears and was horrified to realise they meant me. I'm 72 and still waiting to feel grown up. I do remember when I was 13, finding out that David McCallum was in his 30s and felt heartbroken that he was sooo old. When did you start to feel "old" or are you like me, still waiting?

You’re correct Allira - constant endless pain is a tough deal
Thank heavens I’m the other side of it though of course ordinary age aches n pains are with us

One of my grandsons asked me if I was alive ‘when the world was still black and white

I felt old when confined to the house, unable to drive and in constant pain after fracture/fall earlier this year. Thankfully I’m going backwards now and feeling less ancient

😁

Love that! It was all sepia coloured before that, of course.

Pain can be debilitating and make you feel old and decrepit. ☹

A gas board official came round to discuss replacing my central heating system which was unreliable, apparently there was priority and cut down prices for retired customers.

He was on the phone to his HQ and said
“This client is elderly and very vulnerable”.

I looked around the room thinking that my late father had suddenly re-materialised!

However I got 25% my bill and the installation was completed within 2 days.

I was a happy bunny when going down to my allotment that afternoon to complete my winter digging.

Love it!

We live in a youth oriented, appearance obsessed culture, where there is a stigma and fear about old age, therefore understandably I think, many older folk strive to appear younger.

It seems to be a matter of pride to be told that “you don’t look your age” or dress/act like a stereotypical old person.
I think we should reclaim the word “old” and admit it (it’s not just a number) and glorify in it, having lived to reach this time of life, relishing what is left, instead of being in denial.

I am 78, out and proud about it, and if anyone says that I don’t look my age I retort “this is what an old person looks like”.

I'm not even waiting ! It's never going to happen to me. I'm only 75!!

I'm still 24 - the age I was when I met DH - and definitely not grown up, never have been, never will be... And definitely not old....

We're the same age Rosiebee and I was always amazed how old David McCalum was, we all loved The Man from Uncle. I must admit that I've started to feel my age over the past couple of years, avoiding anyone with a cold and taking care of my back!

I was shopping one day and could see a group of teenage boys approaching. As they came closer, one of them said "I bet you were nice looking when you were young!". I was about thirty at the time grin

A good friend said you have to think of it as “older” not old. Everyone gets older even children. I think that’s quite a good sentiment. wink

Shirls52000 Thu 10-Oct-24 13:25:03

I’m 67 and always say, growing old is mandatory growing up isn’t and I still feel about 30 in my head 🤷‍♀️

Cariad
1. When I inadvertently catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror and think "She looks nothing like me.....errrrm....it is me! Agh!" Fingers crossed I can manage to get my figure back one of these (not too far distant) days - so I at least recognise that bit.

Yes Cariad, I often do that. Then I’ll look again to see my mum staring back at me. It makes me wonder where on earth did all that time go!

ChristinaW Thu 10-Oct-24 13:17:59

I’m also 79 but most definitely not old and certainly not grown up!

Ha, great post.
I’m going to be 57 this month. 75 really but my granddaughter decided to turn it around. Love it. My mum always used to say “you’re as old as you feel”. I think she was right. 😄

This isn't a coment of growing old but the other thing mentioned in first comment. Supermarkets letting young people pack your groceries to raise funds this happens a lot coming up to Christmas I hate it they have no idea how to pack your food stuffs.

I embrace my 'old' age (72 in two weeks). I still colour my hair - a mix of grey and blonde highlights, and I feel the same as I always did in my mind. But my close friends, who are in their 60's, treat me with a bit of deference and seem to believe I have wisdom (??) and I accept that. I am in fairly good health, but my mobility has lessened and I enjoy taking my time on walks etc. I love being a granny, I love not having to work any more, and enjoy a senior discount. Sometimes I worry about being lazy, as I don't go out very often, but then I remember being a nurse for over 40 years, all the night shifts, the tired feet, the backaches from leaning over patients, and I tell myself that this is my time to rest.

Since we were 50, DH and I have been growing down. We'd done the grown up stuff and it was boring so we decided that, as long as it didn't hurt anyone, we would do whatever we wanted regardless of what people thought. So if you see a rather large lady up a tree or playing in an adventure playground before the children arrive, that's probably me grin

I complained to NT about their posters about "Things to do before 11 3/4" I was very tempted before lockdown to vandalise the poster to read 77 3/4 (diagonal lines through the 1 ). The 11 now needs to read 81. Still want to do the unthinkable for an "old lady"

SillyNanny321 Thu 10-Oct-24 12:46:46

I am 80 & like my Nan was at that age still waiting to grow up as having too much fun right now. Well on a good day that is!

TheWeirdo Thu 10-Oct-24 12:34:48

I'm 59 and was called an old lady when I was 34 and working the till in a shop by 3 boys about 12!

They'd see me in the street and call out ''hello, old lady!'' and would do the same by coming in the shop!

One of them said ''you're old enough to be my granny and she's in her 60s!''

HA HA HA! Great lads, never gave me any trouble and always good fun!

catla Thu 10-Oct-24 12:20:23

I feel the same way, Rosiebee, including the part about David McCallum!!

BigBertha1 Thu 10-Oct-24 11:08:44

71 by the way

BigBertha1 Thu 10-Oct-24 11:08:08

I'm officially old now as I bought a top in Edinburgh Woollen Mill and carried their bag through the streets. I made no attempt to hide it.

biglouis Thu 10-Oct-24 10:57:13

I feel old physically because Im unsteady on my feet and have to be very careful on the stairs. However I dont feel old in my mind, I could still write a Ph.D thesis.
