BBC News app - live Scorpio in found in parcel from Shein.

Delila Fri 11-Oct-24 13:25:00

Sorry, scorpion.

crazyH Fri 11-Oct-24 13:32:05

Oh no! I like Shein - cheap and cheerful. But I certainly don’t want a scorpion or any other insect in my parcel 🦟 🐞 🐜 - I will be opening any future parcels in the garden…..

Babs03 Fri 11-Oct-24 13:33:29

Well that’s a bonus the customer didn’t expect!
🤔

sharon103 Fri 11-Oct-24 13:42:32

Is it free returns?

Sadly cheap and cheerful because they copy established products but inferior quality. Fast fashion at its worst.

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-24 13:48:21

There is nothing whatsoever wrong with the quality of the clothes.
I can't vouch for the scorpion though.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 11-Oct-24 13:57:37

I’ve got 2 Shein dresses (both bought for my by a daughter).
Whenever I wear them I get compliments. Cheap and cheerful stuff. However probably not a good back catalogue (human rights, slave labour ??) eldest daughter won’t touch them.

MissInterpreted Fri 11-Oct-24 14:11:56

Cheap and cheerful works for me! Hope I never get a 'freebie' scorpion though! Eeek!

We inadvertently brought one back in a suitcase from Tuscany.
We took it in a plastic tub to our local vet who, after showing it to all and sundry, safely euthanised it.

Could it be their Gerald Ratner moment, their message being "buying from us means a sting in the tail for businesses that pay their fair share of tax in the UK" given RR has stated that she will allow Shein's tax loophole to stand.

Totally agree Terribull Temu is similar, never mind incidences of both child and forced Labour, plus the contribution to landfill by some of their customers. No thanks.

Absolutely. I'm shocked that anyone with a brain would buy from them

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-24 14:54:58

A lot of companies have the same kind of human rights records, if you check.

My clothes don't go into landfill - I've never posted on here that I have so many pairs of shoes or boots, (or anything) that I can't count, or am ashamed to say.

Allira Fri 11-Oct-24 14:57:46

It's not the only scorpion that's been found, apparently.

Was it an accident or is someone trying to damage the business?

Yes, same here. I very rarely buy new clothes - I'm currently sitting here in a top which is older than my son (and he's 29!), but I do admit to buying holiday clothes from Shein and I've just bought a couple of warm sweatshirts from them too - cheaper than even the supermarket stuff. And I can assure you, there's nothing wrong with my brain!

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 11-Oct-24 15:01:32

Barbie dolls made in China and apparently the workers assembling them for Mattel earn a pittance. $2 an hour I think.
Puts me off buying them for L’il Miss. and ‘Ted Baker’ stuff for her parents.

Zara
Zara is a Spanish fashion brand that belongs to the group Inditex. While the brand uses recycled packaging and has a textile recycling program, it is not transparent about the number of resources that go into the production of its clothes.

We also do not know if it’s on track to meet its target to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. A positive point is that Zara’s supply chain is less opaque compared to other fast fashion brands. The company revealed a list of suppliers, but not for its whole supply chain.

It’s conducting audits of subcontractors to review if they’re following their Code of Conduct, but results aren’t entirely public. The company also doesn’t pay its garment workers living wages. In 2017, Zara customers in Istanbul found secret messages in clothing. They were written by garment workers who claimed they had to work for free before the manufacturer producing clothes for Zara went bankrupt.

Overall rating: Not good enough
Our ratings are based on a scale from 1 (We avoid) to 5 (Great)How we rate

Monsoon is owned by Adena Brands.

Our “Planet” rating evaluates brands based on the environmental policies in their supply chains, from carbon emissions and wastewater to business models and product circularity. Here we rate Monsoon “Not Good Enough”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

It uses some lower-impact materials including organic cotton.
It follows an unsustainable fast fashion model with quickly changing trends and regular new styles.
There’s no evidence it’s taking meaningful action to reduce or eliminate hazardous chemicals in manufacturing.
There’s no evidence it’s taking meaningful action to reduce water use.
Workers’ rights are central to our “People” rating, which assess brands’ policies and practices on everything from child labour to living wages and gender equality. Here we rate Monsoon “Not Good Enough”. These are a few factors influencing its score:

Its entire final production stage is certified by Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit - SMETA Best Practice Guidance.
There’s no evidence it provides financial security to its suppliers, which can result in poor working conditions and wages.
There’s no evidence it supports diversity and inclusion in its supply chain.
There’s no evidence it ensures workers are paid living wages in its supply chain.
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, it did not disclose adequate policies or safeguards to protect workers in its supply chain from the virus

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-24 15:13:03

I've done this before, and the only ethical, top to bottom, transparently shown and backed by factual evidence was a Scottish brand who make jumpers.

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-24 15:16:44

Ted Baker has faced a number of ethical issues, including:

Founder's behavior
In 2018, the founder and former CEO of Ted Baker, Ray Kelvin, was accused of inappropriate behavior, including "forced hugging" and other misdemeanors. An employee petition with over 2,500 signatures led to Kelvin stepping down in March 2019. Some say the negative publicity from this incident damaged the brand's reputation and made it difficult to regain its former position.

Sustainability
Good On You Directory rates Ted Baker as "Not Good Enough" for its sustainability practices. Some factors that contributed to this rating include:

Lack of evidence that the company supports diversity and inclusion in its supply chain and operations

No evidence that the company ensures living wages for its supply chain workers

Lack of adequate policies or safeguards to protect supply chain workers during the COVID-19 pandemic

Supply chain
Ted Baker has identified human rights risks and a lack of accountability in lower tiers of its supply chain as barriers to its ESG practices.

Animal welfare
Ted Baker says it expects all animal-derived products it sells to come from animals that are treated in accordance with animal welfare legislation.
(It doesn't show a formal animal welfare policy though)

Shopping today is a minefield really.

MissAdventure Fri 11-Oct-24 15:22:43

It is, isn't it?
Its because stuff is sourced from here there and everywhere, before making it onto our shelves.
