Which is your favourite Catherine Cookson story?

I like The Dwelling Place which is about a 15 year old girl who raises her siblings in great poverty after her parents died of cholera.

Oh that was my favourite. So sad 😥
I wonder if I’d feel the same about it.
From the Library I took out Clan of the Cave Bear which I devoured when it came out but I just couldn’t get into it this time.

I love The Dwelling Place! I was sorry for the miller who was so faithful and such a huge help to her. I believe the historical background is true.

Even though I have the box set I am watching them yet again on UKDrama. I love them all I think I know the scripts! I'm watching 2nd episode of Tilly Trotter this week.

I’ve just got The Hatmaker’s Gift from the charity shop. Really looking forward to reading it.

Haven’t read anything of hers for years, will revisit as she was a favourite a one time. Each book I used to love more than the next. If I recall correctly one I love was something like a Dinner of Herbs?

The Fifteen Streets and The Round Tower.

Have watched the 15 Streets countless times as it stars Owen Teale.

I’ve only read Our Kate, which I loved ( I went through a phase of reading autobiographical books like that). When are they in UK drama? I’d like to start watching them.

Our Kate was the best I think. Incredibly moving.

Her books have almost disappeared from our local libraries - an elderly neighbour asked me to get her some of Mrs. Cookson's work, but there was nothing to be had.

Sweetpeasue Thu 17-Oct-24 22:46:40

I enjoyed so many Catherine Cookson novels in the past. Our Kate and Dinner of Herbs were also ones I loved. The Dwelling Place was great and a wonderful adaptation to screen.
I think Catherine Cookson has been underrated these days and the novels were realistically portraying life in a gritty way.

Our Kate was the best I think. Incredibly moving.

Coming from Birmingham I love the Kathleen Dreyus books which are very similar to Our Kate.

The Mallen Streak and The Dwelling place.
Have to say that a book I also read at the same time as reading Cookson which was every bit as good was A Woman Of Substance by Barbra Taylor Bradford.

Tilly Trotter is my favourite. I like that one too about the young woman who works in her father's sweet shop and tobacconist shop, I loved the way the two elderly widows turned out .

Caleo Thu 17-Oct-24 23:19:57

I have just bought Our Kate from Amazon for £3.25 incl P and P

Talking of Catherine Cookson brings back happy childhood memories. I could read well from a young age and i remember going to the library with my grandmother to collect her books and she introduced me to the Mary Ann series.

As i got older and i went to collect her books for her, i continued to pick a Catherine Cookson to read, but the Mary Ann's stick with me.

downtoearth Fri 18-Oct-24 08:15:33

I loved the Mary Anne series, and Dinner of Herbs was my favourite.

Loved the fifteen streets. And Rooney was a favourite character of mine.also the Mary Anne series. I live in the north east and have busted the streets she wrote about. Even as a fifteen year old girl reading these I knew she loved the north east even with its hardships.

Sorry visited.

Caleo I watched Tilly Trotter on TV a week or so ago. It had a
strange ending which I felt was unfinished business. Probably me just wanting more.

Moth62 Sun 20-Oct-24 11:49:47

I loved her Bill Bailey books though not read any of hers for years

Ilovedogs22 Sun 20-Oct-24 11:53:10

I love all her books, such a wonderful writer If I was stuck on an island,
I would chose to have a complete collection of her work. I would never be bored. Such a rich tapestry of life & characters is given to us through her wealth of writing talent.
She is often underrated by book snobs but their missing out on so much. Her books can take you away with them. Magical, no one else comes close to her. 💕💚💜💞

AGAA4 Sun 20-Oct-24 11:59:12

I haven't read any of her books for years but I enjoyed all of them. I also liked Helen Forrester's books which were similar.
