Still love that word fall instead of Autumn, extra hour in bed this weekend.

I disagree I don’t like the word fall makes me think of those awful road sign with old people with sticks all bent and huddled trying to get over the road we re not all doddery and fall worthy although I ve had a few spectacular ones Fall sounds all wrong although we ve got spring ( into action) summer could be called ‘hot’ but it’s not, and so then fall and lastly winter called ‘cold’
Or we could do away with the seasons and just call it ‘cold’ for autumn,’ very cold’ for winter ‘not so cold’ for spring and ‘less, less cold if we re lucky’ for summer

Why on earth would we do away with Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter ? confused

Autumn is a lovely word.

Leave it alone!

madalene Fri 25-Oct-24 09:45:27

Don’t see any reason to change the word we’ve always used: Autumn.

Especially if and when anyone says you’ve had one, after you’ve happened to trip and fall over.

There was a post on MN recently saying the OP was very concerned about a relative of 73, because she’d ’had a fall’.

A lot of posters were quick to point out that 73 is not considered doddery-old-age nowadays, and that one trip and falling over (there was an obvious non-health related cause) did not mean that said relative needed to wear a pendant and attend a falls clinic.

I love the word Autumn .
It's my favourite season to paint landscapes .
At ballet class ,we had to dress up as seasons for a display .
The Autumn costume was gorgeous - a mixture of gold , limes and scarlets .
I was sure that I'd be an Autumn .
Then the teacher read out our names.
I was a winter in a cool blue costume with a headdress made of a wire coat hanger entwined with silver tinsel .
I went home and asked my mother if she'd ask the ballet teacher if I could change with a girl who'd agreed to swop .It went down like a lead balloon .

No, let the Americans keep ‘fall’, we’ll stick to ‘autumn’.

BlueBelle Fri 25-Oct-24 10:09:58

I think we all agree for once except the Original poster 🤣🤣

Allira Fri 25-Oct-24 10:28:11

No, I don't like the word fall used instead of Autumn.

However, it does help to remember which way the clocks go:

Spring Forward
Fall Back.

Maybe not the first time!

Spring Forward

Speak for yourself! 😂

This.

henetha Fri 25-Oct-24 10:52:25

I think we should stick with Autumn, but don't mind the word
Fall as it conjures up images of leaves falling from the trees in myriad colours.
And Allira is right, that little phrase, - Spring forward, Fall back - does help us to remember which is which.

Allira Fri 25-Oct-24 11:15:10

merlotgran

^Spring Forward^

Speak for yourself! 😂

Well, metaphorically speaking 😁
Think of bunnies! And March hares 🐇

Allira Fri 25-Oct-24 11:17:05

Well, there is a huge fall of leaves from the neighbours' trees which all seem to end up in our garden.

Dislike’fall’, a bit of a grey word,. Autumn is a lovely red, gold word

This is the only way I remember which way the clocks go.

I will stick to Autumn. Such a lovely word. I had. 'fall' recently and not lovely at all.

grandtanteJE65 Fri 25-Oct-24 14:20:12

I don't need reminding whether we put the clocks forward in the spring and back in the autumn, I just wish we cold all agree to drop this stupid Daylight saving act and measure time by the sun all year round!

Jaxjacky Fri 25-Oct-24 14:24:34

I don’t mind the saying at all, but I use Autumn to describe the season and know at least a couple of people I’ll need to remind about the clocks this weekend.

rafichagran Fri 25-Oct-24 14:34:33

Autumn for me as well. I don't mind the saying though. As pointed out Autumn is a lovely word as a lovely season.

Rosie51 Fri 25-Oct-24 15:15:53

I prefer and use Autumn rather than Fall but it's origins are interesting, and older than I thought.

From www.dictionary.com/e/fall/
Why is it called fall?
Recorded use of the word fall as the name of the third season of the year comes from as early as the 1500s. The name is thought to originate in the phrase the fall of the leaf, in reference to the time of year when deciduous trees shed their leaves. The name of its inverse season, spring, is thought to come from the phrase spring of the leaf—the time when everything is blossoming.

The name fall was commonly used in England until about the end of the 1600s, when it was ousted by autumn.

The multiple senses of the word fall come in handy for the helpful reminder “Spring Forward, Fall Back,” which serves as a mnemonic about how to set our clocks for daylight-saving time.

Oldnproud Fri 25-Oct-24 18:47:11

I'm all for sticking with 'autumn', not 'fall', but still rely on the saying 'spring forward, fall back' to remind myself which way to adjust the clocks.

Either way, I can't wait for the clocks to change.
Now that I don't have to get up at a specific time to go to work, my body adjusts naturally to the changing daylight so I am 100% ready to move the clocks back now, and by the end of March I will be 100% ready to move them forwards again.
