Trainers...yes or no?

I used to wear stiletto shoes ,sling back shoes and sandals in my younger years but since retiring I have worn flat shoes. I now feel I need a little more support but I really don't relish the thought of wearing trainers. I know they are very popular, in fact out shopping it looks like everyone is wearing them but me. How comfortable are they?

A chiropodist told me trainers are best for your feet. I love seeing smartly dressed ladies and gents channelling their inner comfort needs with a pair of trainers. I think it shows confidence and chutzpah.

My podiatrist recommends Hokka trainers. I’ve been wearing mine a year, fantastic

Lunar slippers have a heel

Thanks Zeddy2- they really do and lots of styles. I am going to ask for some for Christmas! Thank you so much for this!

I think I've been wearing Sketchers for nearly 10yrs. They are very comfortable. In winter, I'll have a pair of short boots next to my coat, to wear maybe once a week

Can't say I've ever seen any that look nice irrespective of price but they mostly look decidedly comfortable and methinks comfort is king at all times. I haven't succumbed yet but....who knows?!

I have never worn uncomfortable shoes and still do not. Despite this, I do not think any of the shoes I have ever bought would be described as trainers.

I have never had any trouble with my feet and do not look as if I will do, so I must assume that shoes I have worn have always fitted well, even though they are not trainers.

Actually can anyone define for me exactly what a trainer is, as distinct from any other shoe?

You put on a pair of trainers and can run a marathon.

Actually, many foot problems are hereditary, not from wearing the wrong shoes.

I love trainers & daps with almost any dresses /skirts. I do agree they don't look as cool with tights in winter as with bare legs in summer, but the very fine denier natural tights are fine with trainers & a skirt imo.I do like to wear heels occasionally though, but never have been keen on stilettos - should have gone out with the 50's in my opinion.

I've seen friends wearing autumn/winter dresses with short lace-up boots and dark tights.

Good tip - thank you :-) I can see why they are podiatrist recommended as they have a slight rocker sole - like my Wolky sandals. I'm happy with my Skechers though - the only ones I found comfortable were the D-Lites Skechers - the insole was too high for me on the other models.

Monika - I think the only difference with trainers than other comfortable lace-up shoes, is they're trendy and sporty looking! And usually fabric - although you can get leather ones. The soles tend to be thicker as well.

I’ve had trainers in the past when looking sporty was the trend, but don’t think I’ve had any in the past 20 years.
It’s ankle boots or loafers for me in the cooler months and normal shoes/lighter loafers in the summer. I have a pair of what looks like plimsoles, but they’re made from very soft silver leather - my holiday shoes.
I have Barbour lace up ankle boots for really bad weather. My chiropodist says they’re perfect to balance my unstable ankles.

I do love my trainers and have several pairs, the second oldest are used for my walks on the damp, uneven pavements and muddy lanes. The oldest for cycling as they feel so safe

I have new trainers ready to wear when I want to be neat and tidy. All I ever wear these days and as recommended by a podiatrist several years ago. Bit by bit I am throwing my unworn expensive wider-fit shoes and sandals out. All my trainers are very comfy sketchers

I do have good boots for extreme cold days, when trainers are just not warm enough

I haven't seen any in the shops near me but will keep a look out- those Lunar ones look good so I'll get some for Christmas.

Also maybe have a look at Moshulu or Vivaia, Keepingquiet -
Or have a look at the SimplyFeet website as I'm sure I saw some there last year.

Back to trainers - I certainly don't like them with skirts polomint - but don't think you should feel you have to wear them.
I don't.
I do have a pair bought for the gym though.

TerriBull Mon 28-Oct-24 09:56:44

Yes they're comfortable. I never really liked them but they've become indispensable. I originally bought my first pair, whenever that was for the gym, now I wear them pretty often, those and ankle boots, and although they would never have been footwear to go with dresses a few years ago, somehow now they do. I remember going to the US a good way back and thinking 'the entire nation, young and old all wear trainers how bizarre' Out and about on Saturday looking down at feet, realised now so do we.

Grandyma Mon 28-Oct-24 10:13:14

I find these are very comfortable and a cross between a trainer and a shoe. No good for winter but I’ve worn them a lot through the Spring & Summer. Wore them with trousers last night when we went out for dinner.

Simply feet had some, but quite pricey. I didn't really see any on the other sites though, but thanks for the suggestion.

What I would like to see are some lace up shoes with a small(ish) square heal, and not just in boring black or brown, that would look good with a suit or a dress.

High heals are out of the picture for me now. I notice the charity shops are rammed full of the most impossibly healed shoes- I wonder why?

Do men suffer ill affects from not wearing healed shoes?

Kate1949 Mon 28-Oct-24 15:35:01

Primark ultra comfy £14.

Forgot to add I got these from Pavers online I think they were about £35

Romola Mon 28-Oct-24 16:25:56

I've never had a pair of trainers. But I live in Ecco Soft lace-up shoes. I think I'm going to get some Ecco Soft boots this winter.
Sorry, but I think clunky trainers or boots with a dress look wrong on anyone over 25.
