How lovely all these rhymes bring back memories from early years thanks everyone for adding yours.

I haven't heard of any of those others above!

Used to remember lots of skipping songs though and I'm struggling now.

Apart from the "when it's your birthday please jump in".

That sounds vaguely familiar. But don't recognise it. As a child I used to say "Dandy Dee" a lot. After something that went "Whoopsie Diddy Dandy Dee" at the end. But can't remember what it was!

There was a frog lived in a well
Whipsee-diddle-dee-dan-dee-dee
There was a mouse lived in a mill
Whipsee-diddle-dee-dan-dee-dee
The frog he would a-wooing go
whether his mother would let him or no
With a harem-scarem-diddle-um-dare-um
Whipsee-diddle-dee-dan-dee-dee

Is what we used to sing.
I’m trying to remember the other verses

Ooh thank you! I don't remember the song but I do remember the Whoopsee Diddly Dandy Dee. Reminds me of my lovely Dad. I was only about 3 at the time. I used to sit behind the sofa (a den) just saying Dandy Dee over and over. I think my parents were concerned I was being an odd child ha ha. But it was just play and new words.

Even i learned this,as a young child, in the North of England.😂

Scottish babies learn this at birth, along with the Three Craws who sat upon a wa’!

Verse 2 tells you you can ‘shove your other granny, ‘cos she’s your daddy’s mammy’!

Ye can shove yer other grannie aff a bus
Ye can shove yer other grannie aff a bus
Ye can shove yer other grannie
Cause she's yer daddie's mammie , ye can shove your other grannie off a bus.

My dad was in the Royal Navy. He taught me this when I was at junior school and I’ve taught it to the Boy Wonder and L’il Miss who both love it!

I’ve no idea how to spell it so will just write it as it’s said!

R R chickarar
Chickarar Rooney
Rooney Pooney
Ping Pong Piney
Alaballa whisky
Chinese Chum

❤️ it! All these years ….

Memories indeed! I was infamous in our family for actually trying to shove my granny off a bus ( tram in the 1950s). I thought we had missed our stop in the centre of town and granny was blocking the exit. Oh dear!

Harris27 Mon 28-Oct-24 19:52:46

Love it!😊

gentleshores Mon 28-Oct-24 19:50:31

Also love the photo of the granny being thrown from the bus ha ha.

Elegran Mon 28-Oct-24 08:49:12

and another line -
"Maizie Dotes and Dozey Dotes and little Lamsy Tivey,
Kiddly Tivey too, wouldn't you?
If the words sounds queer
And funny to your ear,
A little bit jumbled and jivey,
Sing mares eat oats and does eat oats
and little lambs eat ivy."

Elegran Mon 28-Oct-24 08:47:29

To be written down as a family -

Maizie Dotes and Dozey Dotes and little Lamsy Tivey,
Kiddly Tivey too, wouldn't you?
If the words sounds queer
And funny to your ear,
Sing mares eat oats and does eat oats
and little lambs eat ivy.

As a child I used to think that Kiddly Tivey must be the cat (kitten?) or maybe the dog. If you feed little lambs ivy they will probably get ill, and too much oats isn't good for mares, either.

yggdrasil Mon 28-Oct-24 07:40:56

and "a kid will eat ivy too"

JamesandJon33 Mon 28-Oct-24 05:16:57

And does eat oats ( as in rabbits) …. I believe it is

Athrawes Sun 27-Oct-24 12:02:42

Love it!

dogsmother Sun 27-Oct-24 12:00:28

As known to me as ….
Mares eat oats and dozy dotes and little lambs eat Ivy, a
Kiddly tivey too, wouldn’t yew.
Yes I know that’s all messed up but If you know you know.

Happy memories of school coach trips! Other verses could include headmaster, unpopular teachers etc. Lyrics usually adapted by some clever and witty student!

I seem to be posting youtube videos this morning! Scottish cousins introduced us to the wonderful Singing Kettle and here they are in fine voice upsetting paternal grandparents:
