I’m slowly doing the gentle art of Swedish death clearance on my bungalow so that my children aren’t left with a load of stuff to deal with.

I’ve given up knitting, crotcheting etc. I’ve really had to steel myself to give up stuff that cost a lot eg a Glorifila rug kit that cost £150 in 2011. I thought if I passed all my lovely stuff on to others it wouldn’t be such a wrench.

I posted 6 items on local Facebook groups. Seemingly got a lot of interest, took absolutely ages to reply to people, set up collection times and put items in porch for them to collect (physical effort due to disabilities).

Two people collected without a thank you, one said she was on her way then forgot. One argued with me and after 36 hours of wasting my time said oh you live too far away. Then no response from the others.

The rest of my stuff is going to the dump.

Has anyone found their gifting of items successful?

The Catholic religion has enough corruption within itself and has had for years . How many more children will be abused by priests before the church realises celibacy has a dark side . Organized religions have enough corruption to make Satan proud . I am no longer a member of the Catholic Church and for good reason ! I do enjoy decorating for Halloween and the children that come are always polite and thank me for the extra effort I put in my decorations .

I have very good response from Freecycle but don't offer to the first request unless the asker is polite.

Primary schools and nurseries are often very grateful for bits of fabric and yarn. Might be worth contacting one - there might be someone living nearby who could collect.

Also if you have lots of bigger stuff, charity shops will often collect and there's always those charity bags which get put through the letter box (at least they do round our way).

I'd certainly try those ideas before just dumping.

Tools with a Mission has other "recycling" (Christian) links on it's website eg. Bikes, books
Halfords for example (in many cases) seems to take bikes.

You just put your postcode in to get the details.

Why this mania for getting rid of stuff? Ok, clear the real junk and keep the place clean. But don’t your heirs have the right to decide what’s useful and what isn’t? Rather than giving it away to strangers.

I don't think it's a mania!!!
Not I'm my house!
It's LONG overdue

I still have stuff here from family bereavements in boxes waiting for me to sort that I just find emotionally exhausting.

Thank you everyone for all your suggestions about what to do with my coats.

I think I'm going to give them to one of our local charities and hope they don't end up being sold on by the recepients.
