Really enjoying having lots of little ones dressed as witches, skeletons and evil looking ghoulies knocking at the door. We have a system in our area. If you have decorations outside the house then they call. I have some orange balloons on the door and am working through a box of 50 bags of sweets.
Do you love Halloween or do you stay in the dark ignoring any calls ?

There’s already a long thread on Halloween, but under a rant from Mae.
Most following posts ‘disagree’ with her views.

Unfortunately there are no little ones on or near my small development. I’ve a bag of Haribos (little bags) but think I’ll be eating them myself over the next few days.

DD2 has just sent a picture of her dressed to collect DGS2 from Nursery, before going on to a Halloween party for 3 year olds. I’d love to post it, but she could be recognized.

I don’t particularly like it but I do put pumpkins outside and have a bowl of sweets ready. As our grandchildren do trick or treating in their village and love it I feel I should do the same for the children here.My grandchildren chose the sweets yesterday and carved the pumpkins🎃🎃🎃

We have had eleven little ones tonight all dressed up and so polite. They all took just one bag of sweets until I said they could take more!

Now I stay in the dark ( well not literally ) I used to put lights and a pumpkin or something outside, last year I did it as usual, got the sweets in, and not one person called, so I haven’t bothered this year .
I haven’t seen anyone out and about so far.

Witzend Thu 31-Oct-24 18:32:25

We were out till 6, but the pumpkin then went in the window. We don’t get many kids round here anyway, so dh and I might have to eat most or all of the sweets, oh dear….

Sorry didn't see the other thread !

Georgesgran Thu 31-Oct-24 18:48:57

Don’t worry Jaffa.
Mae’s thread is under Pedants Corner and about money grabbing Halloween.

This is a much nicer thread.

Can’t post a pic of DD2, but here’s Little Dog looking thrilled - not!

We don't do halloween because we live on a busy road where there are very few families with children, and if there are they tend to go to the quieter roads/streets. Tried it a couple of years ago and didn't get anyone coming so gave it up.

Halloween is not my thing . My DD and SIL make a big deal of it with their two young children. I bite my tongue and go along with their 'celebration' . Perhaps it's because when I was a child Halloween was not even mentioned. Am I alone in my thoughts, am I a fun basher ?

nanaK54 Thu 31-Oct-24 19:08:51

I love it!
I live in a very small village and know most of the children, absolute pleasure to have them knock at my door.

tanith Thu 31-Oct-24 19:21:28

I’ve had loads knocking tonight sorry but I’m a misery and don’t answer the door.

Jaxjacky Thu 31-Oct-24 19:30:01

We’ve had a few, but we’re out earlier, my daughter made a cake at her house.

No, it's made up , imported rubbish. Landfill.

Lovely spooky cake!

Jaffacake2 Thu 31-Oct-24 19:41:06

There wasn't Halloween when I was a child but I did like penny for the guy. Anyone remember making stuffed guys and going round houses with them in old pushchair or handmade go karts ?

hollysteers Thu 31-Oct-24 19:42:28

I was pleased to give four or five local children sweets a little while ago after being stuck in for nearly three weeks after surgery. I don’t have a pumpkin outside, but an orange Halloween garland over the door and a little lantern I hung from a tree.
I thought my neighbour’s children would come round as usual, but the family know I’m still recovering, so maybe they don’t want to bother me. There’s still time yet!
A poster on another thread said that the old tradition was to recite a poem or something, now that I do agree with👍

I don't like Halloween normally at all but yesterday .......
(slightly pre Halloweeny) something wonderful happened in the tiny little wood in the our village.
While walking our old dog we were followed by three little trick or treaters. They scampered noisily behind us( trying to spook us, gigging madly. ☺ One was dressed as a very fat, square tomato, one was a giant bright, bright green pea &
one was a square-shaped funny mummy. They were only about 8 or so & truly terrible at being quiet or sneaky or scary! It was a lovely daft happy moment. 😊

jasper. You might enjoy Mae’s thread more!

Georgesgran Thu 31-Oct-24 19:57:52

Posted too soon jasper

Should you read other threads, more knowledgeable GN’s than I will explain that it’s not imported rubbish,
I also know that both my DDs keep their decorations from one year to the next.

Love the 🐶 and the 🎂. No trick or treating here but they all seem to be going to 🎊 parties

Whitewavemark2 Thu 31-Oct-24 19:58:33

The tinies have been in 😄😄😄. It wasn’t even dark. One dressed as a goul the other a little devil. Wish I could post the photo we took, they looked delightful. I pretended to be frightened and the little devil took his mask off “Don’t worry - it’s me!”

Dear little souls.

I am now munching through the sweets they left.

They were then off to a Halloween party.

Thank you Jasper .

Seriously , I don't it. Part of the relentless lemming like drive to conform and consume. The 2 demi Gods of modern society.

With the hour difference we haven't started ours yet, but I have seen photos of my GC in their costumes for their school parties. Home made robots with boxes, tin-foil and lights, what fun!

We have a lot of stairs coming up to the house (25), so don't get a lot of trick-or-treaters. I have candy enough for 50, but will most likely get around 20-25. The town does a fireworks show at 8:15, so my lights will be off by then.
