Ch4 Dispatches tonight about Royals making money

Just saw there's a programme on tonight at 8.10pm on Channel 4 - Dispatches - apparently showing the huge amounts of money King Charles and Prince William are making from public services. Methinks they should be paying inheritance tax along with everyone else!

It sounds interesting though - if it's what they say it is.

I lived in France for a while and French peope are proud that they own their own country. Famous historical artefacts are for the benefit of the people and the country. As someone said earlier - they make a lot from tourism just as the Uk does, without Royalty. Also all museums in Paris are free for anyone under the age of 26 (only Europeans and we're not European any more so it's only free for British under 18's).

I don't like the current Royal in charge but I am in favour of royalty overall. I just think a President will open the doors to the likes of Trump and his ilk particularly as a country we appear reluctant to vote. However, I do think there should be a radical overhaul. Let them pay the appropriate taxes on their personal estates and be under the same rules as everybody else when it comes to making money. Those things that belong to the Crown should be publicly owned and exempt from taxation.

Whilst Williams properties should meet the same standard as other landlords, a lot of social housing isn't and jolly well should be.

France do ok as a republic :-) America is America.

The thing that strikes me is - the Royals shouldn't be able to have it both ways. Either they are just land owning aristocrats free to run businesses - or they are a Government funded Royal Family for the benefit of the country.

So either they should give private land to the country for the benefit of all and just live off the millions of tax payer grants. Or they should resign the monarchy and become land owning aristocrats.

I agree with you, not only parasites but hypocrites too when we hear Prince William going on and on about homelessness, it makes me mad when they have all those homes -39 - I believe which are unoccupied most of the year.

Where are William 39 homes ?

It’s not just Charles and William. They’re is also all the other titled aristocracy in this country. Lord Falmouth for example (William’s neighbour in Cornwall) also owns vast acreage in both Cornwall and Kent and there are many others like him all earning vast sums of money from tenants.

Nothing wrong with having a property empire so long as you pay all the relevant taxes.

The country needs tax payers.

Wasn't there a kerfuffle some years ago about Queen Elizabeth and her tax situation, and, as a result think she started paying income tax or similar?
May be wrong but…..

Yes, there was something like that.

I don’t think National disasters have anything to do with this.

I believe Spain has higher tourist revenue than U.K. and many of the most visited tourist attractions in U.K. are museums and art galleries for example, not just in England, but also Scotland.

The people in Valencia were throwing mud at the King and Queen when they visited. One shouted "Murderer" at him.

Is their King an absolute ruler? I thought Spain was a Constitutional Monarchy and parliamentary democracy.

I suppose he was a handy scapegoat in the absence of the Prime Minister and any troops who should be there.

Let's blame the Monarch when others fail to do their jobs properly.

No-one is preventing the RF from defending themselves.

I’d be more than happy to hear Charles & William explain why they need to charge rent on public service and charity buildings?

In fact, I’d love to hear it!

Farzanah Mon 04-Nov-24 11:38:38

Yes. Sorry to miss NI & Wales!

Indigo8 Mon 04-Nov-24 11:34:04

Northern Ireland and Wales.

Cambridge, Oxford, Liverpool, York, Newquay and many other places attract foreign visitors who have not come because of the Royal family.

I think it’s very naive to imagine that the RF are unable to defend themselves.

hollysteers Mon 04-Nov-24 11:21:16

With cut backs, transparency, paying tax etc., I’m not against the RF if the Head of State is conscientious and does a good job and I believe Charles does try, even through cancer treatment.

The RF have untold wealth apart from the Duchies (which should go) Basements full of treasures (the Russian jewels etc).
All hangers on should go, one tiara each, one castle for the King and a home in the country. That’s enough surely?

Allsorts France don't have a monarchy but seem to bring in plenty of tourist revenue, as does Germany.

Paris certainly does, Germany? I have done a couple of trips but never seems a touristy sort of place.

Channel 4 is a struggling channel and is not adverse to twisting the truth and manipulating facts to make a shock horror documentary especially about people who they know cannot reply or defend themselves

Of course they can defend themselves. Maybe this might be a good time for them to read the room and take advice from advisers who are not part of the sycophantic court.

Jane112 Mon 04-Nov-24 11:01:23

They're still making money out of charities, schools, the armed forces, hospitals and schools, even if it is taxed the RF get the profits and why do they need the Civil List if they're getting £millions from the Duchies? They monarchy should be abolished or reduced to living a much more normal life like other European royals, they've grifted off the country for far too long and using medieval feudal laws in 2024 to keep on grifting is disgusting. As for the tourism argument no one ever gets to see a royal when visiting their palaces, the public are only tolerated when the family isn't there, people would still visit the royal properties. Since QE2 died the function of the royals has been photo ops, soft focus videos and PR exercises. Camilla spent the latest royal tour sniggering at the local people.

Jaberwok Mon 04-Nov-24 10:58:27

I would suggest that some research is done about this programme before throwing up your hands in horror. Channel 4 is a struggling channel and is not adverse to twisting the truth and manipulating facts to make a shock horror documentary especially about people who they know cannot reply or defend themselves. So easy! For example, Camelford House on Albert embankment. The land belongs to H.M. The building actually belongs to Thames Water and is looked after by Savilles the estate agents. It is Thames Water that are turning away thousands of pounds by refusing lettings for whatever reason while claiming poverty. This building has been half empty for years, badly in need of refurbishment and generally neglected, none of which is anything to do with the King. Pity this fact wasn't highlighted by Dispatches. You could go on for ever highlighting other discrepancies, but it would take far too long. Suggest a bit of research into Margaret Hodge too while you're about it!

Miss Adventure, my son too is surprised at how gullible I have been.
