Breakfast in bed?

I was listening to the radio and they were discussing this, and I realised I have never had as much as a cup of coffee in bed. I’m not counting things I’ve eaten or drunk when I was ill, but just having breakfast in bed as a ‘treat’.
I agreed with the fellow who said that if you have to sit up you’re as well in a chair, and if you’re in a chair you may as well get up properly.
And, how do you avoid crumbs or spillages?

I would hate it.

Seeing Cora and Mary having breakfast in bed in Downton looked very decadent.

Get up and get dressed!

I prefer to identify with the privileged classes myself. I get up, let the dog out, and make myself a cup of coffee to take back to bed at 6am every morning. I’m decadent, or to use an alternative word, retired. I no longer need to leap out of bed to go to work at the crack of dawn. All I’m lacking is a lacy knitted bed jacket.

Please carry on with your cuppa and painkillers before you are able to get up.

Not what I meant by ‘breakfast in bed’.

When I was a teenager, every morning my mother would bring me a morning roll with square slice sausage, while I was still in bed.
She was a scary woman and I was afraid to tell her that I could not face it, first thing.

I was an ungrateful wretch. Now I would gladly eat it, but am not allowed it! 😂

Interesting thread reading about everyone’s breakfast routine. I’ve never had breakfast in bed and not likely to start now. Unless I hire a butler 😆

Decades of providing 24hr care and needing to be on the move by 5am has me in a fixed routine although sadly the caring is no longer required . Once I’m on the move I like to keep moving. I live alone apart from maybe one night a week when my grandchildren stay over . In theory I could return to bed with a cuppa but it’s never occurred to me to even try it.

Just like GrannyGravy13 my DH has brought me a cup of tea every day since we were married.
Also a piece of toast and the paper every Sunday!
Very much appreciated especially when the children were little!

How lovely. A remarkably splendid tradition.

My husband and I have had brunch in bed on a snowy or rainy mid morning.

Can be very lovely. We do café .. Every Sunday morning.

We used to at weekends when we both worked f/t, tea/coffee, toast and paper. Then living in Françe we’d sit outside with croissent or toast, now we don’t eat until very late in the morning, fasting for hours.

This Mary struggles to get out of bed and it takes ages to get moving. My morning cuppa and painkillers mean that I can then get up and get dressed!

I've never had breakfast in bed either. The idea just doesn't appeal to me. I have, however, had a cup of tea and a ginger biscuit in bed when I was pregnant with my daughter and suffering from morning sickness, after my doctor advised it and said it would help - and it did do the trick!

Same here, with the tea and ginger biscuit, it did really help in pregnancy.
I’m not a fan of brekkie in bed.

CanadianGran Sat 09-Nov-24 20:00:21

I've never even considered it. The only time I've even had a cup of tea or glass of ginger ale in bed is when I have been ill.

Mind you, I do sit at the kitchen table and leisurely have my oats, coffee and read a magazine or newspaper for about 30 min each morning. DH doesn't eat breakfast, and his tea goes in a travel mug which he takes around the house doing is chores. When he's up, he's up... not a sitter.

Ooh I love breakfast in bed... even though I have to make it myself.

An excellent response Chocolatelovinggran!
Sometimes people are so uptight they need live a little! It will soon be morning & we can decadently stuff our faces wrapped in our crummy duvets. 😁

OH has always brought me tea in the morning, these days it's a pot on tray with a china cup as I like to linger listening to the news and catching up on "things". Our previous house had servants bells in the kitchen so when I wasn't working I could ring for my tea from the bed, so decadent, now I just use the en suite and he can hear the flush in the kitchen. Somehow it's not the same.

No breakfast in bed for me. I like to sit on a chair at a table to eat.

When I was small DF used to breakfasts in bed on Sunday. he would take them up to DM and DSx2, then he and I would sit and eat ours compabionably at the kitchen table.

My husband brings me coffee in bed every morning. I usually listen to the news on the television for a bit, then he brings me a second cup of coffee. He can’t stay in bed once he’s woken up so he comes downstairs and does emails, banking etc on his computer, and when he finished he brings me the second cup of coffee. Then I get up and dressed.

A cup of tea in bed is a long standing tradition here. Many years ago we had a Teasmaid , no laughing, it worked for us. Since we’ve both retired Mr C makes the first cuppa and after half an hour or so at least four mornings out of seven he brings us both breakfast and a second cuppa. Strangely when he couldn’t do it post surgery or during recovery from covid it was something he very much missed. Apparently me bringing him breakfast, lunch and dinner wasn’t the same smile.

I am other, who is brought a cup of tea in bed every day by DH. He also brings a biscuit, so that I have something in my stomach before I take my painkillers.

LucyAnna2 Sat 09-Nov-24 18:59:16

Cup of tea in bed, brought by DH every day. Love it, starts the day well. No food in bed though.

TerriBull Sat 09-Nov-24 18:13:16

I don't really think I'd appreciate breakfast in bed, I certainly don't like the idea of toast crumbs in the bed. I like to be washed and dressed, and anyway I rarely eat much before 11ish midday even. I am lucky though my OH delivers me coffee around 7.30ish, he does it far more often than I do.

Skydancer Sat 09-Nov-24 18:11:51

I can't think of anything worse. I like to get up, shower and get dressed. Then I feel read to start the day. I could never ever lounge around in pyjamas either in the early morning nor in the evening. When I'm downstairs I'm dressed. When I'm in bed I'm asleep.

Fleurpepper Sat 09-Nov-24 18:11:29

Cup of tea brought to me in bed every morning- love it. But never any food.

SueDonim Sat 09-Nov-24 18:07:37

I wouldn’t thank anyone for breakfast in bed. :ungrateful: I have had BID at times but it’s so much faff I’d rather get up and dressed and keep to my normal routine.

As someone else notes, meals in bed were mandatory for childhood illnesses. No getting up except for the loo.

Greyduster Sat 09-Nov-24 18:05:26

My breakfast in bed is a cup of coffee and two digestive biscuits. Eating actual food in bed has never appealed to me even when I’ve been ill.

gulligranny Sat 09-Nov-24 17:41:00

I'm another one lucky enough to have a cup of tea every morning brought by DH. We drink our tea and chat, we read several chapters of our respective books, we chat a bit more then -and only then - do we shower, dress and go downstairs for breakfast which is quite often taken separately, depending on what our day holds.

Before Mr. G and I met and married, I lived alone for a long time and at weekends (I was still working back then) I'd make myself breakfast in bed as a treat.

NotAGran55 Sat 09-Nov-24 17:39:23

No food, but two coffees every morning before getting up.
I have a little Nespresso machine is the bedroom ☕️. I’m always awake by 0530 and it’s a great start to the day.

Imarocker Sat 09-Nov-24 17:37:06

DH brings me coffee and cereal in bed every morning. I love a slow start to the day. We read the papers and I email my friends. Have to say this is usually about 6,30am
