The real John Lewis Christmas Ad has arrived

Just the right level of sentimentality, no specific product placement and a theme I’m sure most of us can relate to.
Accompanied by Richard Ashcroft performing Sonnet, it’s a winner in my book.

What does anyone else think?

Usedtobeblonde Thu 14-Nov-24 10:34:46

Why in this and other Christmas adverts and Christmas films over the years do all presents come beautifully wrapped with lovely trimmings?
In my world they come in boxes or bags and muggins here has to spend hours wrapping the d..n things.

emmasnan Thu 14-Nov-24 10:49:02

Confusing and quite underwhelming. It was fast paced but I still felt the end needed to come faster.

Calendargirl Thu 14-Nov-24 10:57:06

‘Frantic’ and ‘fake’ was how it appeared to me.

Didn’t say ‘Christmas’ or ‘JL’ to me.

Certainly wouldn’t encourage me to shop there.

Had no idea it was the ‘flagship’ JL store, we have none anywhere near us.

HelterSkelter1 Thu 14-Nov-24 10:57:55

As they have been cost cutting eg Christmas bonuses not paid recently, they could have saved some £££££££ and recycled Buster the Dog... the royalties I would have thought would be less than the cost of this new ad.

Kate1949 Thu 14-Nov-24 11:03:43

I've got three sisters but I didn't understand this ad.

pascal30 Thu 14-Nov-24 16:54:01

Chaotic and horribly sentimental.. it certainly wouldn't encourage me to shop at John Lewis..
although of course I do but for reasons of quality..

Cossy Thu 14-Nov-24 17:12:52

Just watched it! I have no sisters! I loved everything about it!

Merry Christmas haha

IMO Christmas should start and end in December!

Visgir1 Thu 14-Nov-24 17:17:34

I had to watch it twice to get it.. I think it is... Searching for a special gift for her sister she stumbled, into a "Narnia" to revisit her life growing up with her younger sister.

They have strong bond even though at times they had irritated each other. She re visited different stages of their lives. Fond happy memories, always their for each other.

I have a younger sister, who is also my best friend. We share so much History and love for each other. She always gets a special gift from me at Christmas, and her birthday. I probably spend more on her than my DH.

I get this advert, it brought tears to my eyes.

My sister and I are both JL fans, or as we call it "The Mother ship" most gifts I buy come from that store.
I liked it, I know that store in Oxford Street.

There have been some good JL adverts. I did like the Dog and other animals on the Trampoline.

NotSpaghetti Thu 14-Nov-24 17:23:35

Not my sort of advert.
Dull.

Boz Thu 14-Nov-24 17:26:13

Didn't like the jumper or the music - both underwhelming .Jl gets a lot of my business which will not alter. The message? Just giving I suppose and preferably from JL. Not much fun though and no toy to sell you unless they have ordered 5000 units of that jumper.

Allira Thu 14-Nov-24 18:03:33

Well, it was nothing special.
Not witty or clever as previous adverts were.

I have daughters and granddaughters and the only bit that resonated was where she was told "Get out of my room!"

I await the spoof with breathless anticipation! 😁

AGAA4 Thu 14-Nov-24 19:42:20

Just spoiled a good song.

MandL Thu 14-Nov-24 20:59:27

I ‘got’ the story, but it just made me a bit sad-having no siblings, it showed an experience I’d liked to have had, but didn’t.

twiglet77 Thu 14-Nov-24 21:33:39

Well, that was another hopeless effort from JL. Lovely song, baffling messages, and no relevance to the retailer.

DamaskRose Thu 14-Nov-24 21:41:32

I didn’t really get it till the end but it did make me wish I had a sister …

NotAGran55 Thanks for the post. I’m from the US so hadn’t heard of the John Lewis Department Store chain. Found, watched and enjoyed all 18 adverts ☺️

Another miss for me. JL adverts are getting boring and irrelevant. I liked 'Bear and Hare" the "Snowman and Snow-woman", 'Buster the dog" and even 'the dragon' one, but too many miss the mark.

For me nothing can top the Sainsbury's 2014 Christmas Ad
www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWF2JBb1bvM That was probably the most poignant ad ever. Monty the penguin didn't stand a chance!

DanniRae Fri 15-Nov-24 07:22:07

Hi Rosie, I have just watched the 2014 Sainsbury's ad on YouTube. OMG what an amazing ad! It has made quite tearful .... well very tearful, to be honest.
It is definitely going to take some beating!!
Thank you x

GrannyGravy13 Fri 15-Nov-24 07:49:33

I was in John Lewis yesterday (not Oxford Street, the one in our County Town) and the current Ad popped into my mind several times especially when looking for a gift for my sister.

BlueBelle Fri 15-Nov-24 08:03:16

Ohh I didn’t like it it was major overloaded like they were trying too hard
I didn’t understand it apart from it was about two sisters So what about all the people without sisters (me) what about all those who are estranged from sisters or have lost sisters Why is about sisters only
It was way too manic I was just recognising one person when it was onto the next
No I ll happily blank out when it’s on

I ve never been in a John Lewis store (no reason it just hasn’t happened not one that close to me and always presumed it was ‘a bit expensive’)

GrannyGravy13 Fri 15-Nov-24 08:17:09

BlueBelle if you buy something in John Lewis and find the identical article cheaper elsewhere they will refund the difference. They did drop this business model for a while but it is back now, not sure if it is a permanent thing or just temporary.

The stores promise is never knowingly undersold

NotAGran55 Fri 15-Nov-24 08:57:12

I seem to be in a minority then, liking and understanding the ad this year.
I have definitely felt the last minute panic of trying to find the right gift for someone special, not necessarily my sister. I always reminisce on Christmases past, of times good or bad times over the years with loved ones. The scene where she sees herself with her (now) dead mum got to me 😔

I thought it was very clever using the shop for the first time, and not have any particular item to showcase.
The ad was stuffed full instead with things to tempt. When I go to one of their branches next week I’m going to count how many items I see!

Oh dear "horribly sentimental" it Christmas, a sentimental time for many.
Rather this than that awful Boots advent.

BlueBelle Fri 15-Nov-24 09:50:22

a sentimental time for many and a very painful time for many why not a bit of a less frantic ad I got tired watching all that flying around anyway it’s not for me, enough said

Allira Fri 15-Nov-24 10:22:27

It was way too manic
Wasn't it just! I wondered what on earth was going on, probably blanked out the music trying to work out who was who then realised I didn't care two hoots anyway.

I should imagine it appeals to those with sisters.

Buster the dog was the best and the spoof one of thst too - although I hope no-one makes an update as the thought is quite terrifying!
Actually, I've had an idea 🤔
