Following on from the buns thread, what do you call a bread roll?
Roll in the south?
Teacake or breadcake in Yorkshire?
Cob in the Midlands.
Bap- where?

Oreo

In that case, will you order me a pack please?😃

grin
What is it you want, now?
Stotties, batches, bin lids, buns, bread rolls, sausage rolls, Swiss rolls, barms...

Baps if they're soft and squishy.

But what did the muffin man sell (the one in the song)? Was it some kind of bread roll/bun/crumpet?
Muffins seem to have morphed into over large fairy cakes with butter icing on top.

English muffins - yeasty buns that are split and toasted, Can be served sweet or savoury.

If you've ever been to MacDonalds they use them for their Bacon and Egg McMuffins.

Do you know the muffin man? Apparently he lives down Dury Lane.🤭

The long rolls are finger rolls or hot dog rolls.

Biscuitmuncher Sun 24-Nov-24 22:59:57

You are all wrong, it's a batch

And then there are barmpots, which is something quite different: people who behave in ways that seem odd to other people.
These are not a food product.

There are bridge rolls, which ar longer, thinner and smaller than bread rolls.

Bread rolls are called rolls here in the west of Scotland, and are often filled with square sausage and/ or bacon and potato scone for breakfast. The rolls are either soft or well fired ( crusty but not brittle).

Norah Sun 24-Nov-24 18:29:06

Roll or Brotchen.

Baggs Sun 24-Nov-24 18:26:27

I’d call that a bridge roll.

Oh yes, Oreo! I'd forgotten that one. We did call them bridge rolls.

Must be all this living in furrin parts like Angus and Oxfordshire and Argyll wot did it 😂

A bun fight Oreo? 😂😂

Sounds like the song Ernie by Benny Hill, that used to crack me up, Dad had a record and we kids played it loads.

Babs03 Sun 24-Nov-24 17:54:09

Baps or barm cakes in the NW where I am originally from, a roll here in the South where I ended up. A cob is a hard crusty bap/roll or a loaf with a big round base and smaller round on top.
😁

I've never understood why they're called hamburgers when they're made from beef, MissInterpreted.

Invented in Hamburg?

You got it!

Did they originate in Hamburg?

I did ask 😁

I call them bread buns, but that’s possibly more to do with hearing my Mum and Grandma calling them that - Grandma was from the North East, I’m a Yorkshire lass but we never said bread cakes in our family.

Tea cakes are little fruit bread buns, with currants in them (at least that’s how I refer to them).

I’m fascinated by regional differences and even differences within the same region for the same item. Things can get a bit blurred around the edges, can’t they?

mum2three Sun 24-Nov-24 16:03:28

Baps in Lancashire

Oreo Sun 24-Nov-24 16:01:11

This thread may lead to a big fight😂

Long soft rolls for hot dog sausages we called finger rolls.

I’d call that a bridge roll.
A round bread roll is just a roll, tho it can be soft topped or a crusty roll.
Baps are larger and a bit flatter than a roll.
Teacakes have currants/ dried fruit in them.
Very large bridge rolls are now called submarines.
