My partner and I were sitting at breakfast this morning, having our porridge and cream (It's yummy) when I had a flashback to when I was quite young and still living at home with my parents.

When we were unwell, our mum used to make "gruel" which I absolutely loved (as did my brother). It was then forgotten about over the years and now I can't ask my mum for the recipe as she passed away many years ago sad

My dad used to make 'pobs'. We are from the north of England.

It was white bread cut or broken into smallish pieces soaked in milk with sugar in it. Very nice to have if you were ill.

porridge, with cream (or evap) around the edge and syrup or honey in the centre. I haven't made this for many years, being too fattening plus not good if heading for diabetes.

I’m also from the north and remember “pobs”
We always had them when we were “ poorly “ 😊

People who know about pobbies!! 😁. My v good friend from Bradford told me about what she called pobbies - bread and warm milk. When my DC were being fussy about food she’d offer them pobbies to eat. They always decided that the food in front of them was the better option. 🤣🤣

I don't know gruel but it was a big pot of porridge every morning for all 9 of us and we could have seconds if we dared.

I used to get pobs when I was ill ( mum from Yorkshire) - it was white bread in pieces with warm milk and salt. She used to have salt on porridge, too. My grandma on her side was from Durham so maybe she followed the Scottish tradition?
